In this episode, we’re taking a look at error in thinking #27! Warren Buffet’s business partner, Charlie Munger, gave a speech outlining a number of cognitive biases they avoid to gain and maintain their wealth. It’s definitely worth considering!
The twenty-seventh error in thinking we'll examine is "declinism". Listen to find out what it is and how we can guard against this error in thinking. It's worth your consideration. Take a listen!
* Error in Thinking #27: Declinism**
* Basically, we tend to romanticize the past and view the future negatively, believing that societies/institutions are by and large in decline.
* For example, you hear yourself saying, “Back in the day, we respected our elders.”
* The reality is, there are a lot of respectful kids today, but our language has changed.
* Fact is, many people are less formal than they used to be; so respect might not “sound” the same.
* So, what do you do with this information?
* It’s important that you are alerted to the fact that we are susceptible to declinism.
* To overcome the “declinism”, do the following:
* The first step is to be aware of it.
* Next, look for examples of where the good you saw in the past is still present today.
* Then, look for examples of where the bad you anticipated in the future existed in the past.
* In areas that matter, seek our quantitative data; get the numbers.
* That way, you may develop a balanced perspective.
* Remember that it’s possible to edit memories, removing the negative from the past.
* When it matters, apply critical thought to negative projections that pop up in your mind.
* If you find yourself saying the past was good and the future’s gonna be bad, stop yourself, so you can avoid declinism.
