Error in Thinking #10: The Spotlight Effect

Basically, we overestimate how much other people notice how we look or act.

For example, if we wear new clothes and shoes, we think people will notice.

If the next day we asked them what we had on the day before, the reality is that most people wouldn’t even remember.

The same thing occurs if we make a mistake and stumble over our words in a presentation.

The next day, no one will even remember.

The reality is that we notice differences in our actions or appearance more than others do, leading us to overestimate how much other people notice those same differences.

Fact is, most people almost never care about us as much as we think (or wish) they do.

So, what do you do with this information?

To overcome the spotlight effect, do the following:

The first step is to be aware of it.

When you feel self-conscious about a mistake, allow yourself to be ok with it instead of making it more serious than it is.

If you feel like others are staring at you, just know that most people aren’t as focused on your behavior as you are.

Remember, you don’t draw as much attention as you think, and few people care or pay attention.

This should give you the courage and drive to go about bringing your vision to reality.
