On this Labor Day Week I continued my podcast from last week (https://designerscirclehq.com/how-the-perfect-project-came-to-be/) on how this perfect project evolved.
Peggy, the homeowner of the project, is back again this week to chat about her and Dan's resilience and ability to adapt to unforeseen and overwhelming mishaps during this project.
We covered the following talking points:
We talked about doing a video when everything is picture perfect in this home. It is hard to visualize and appreciate all the beauty of this project by just listening to the podcast, so since I have a You Tube channel, I will post the video as soon as it is completed. The video will show and call out the subcontractors and their work.
Also I will post some of the completed pictures on my Facebook page - Home Design Chat with Nancy

Home Design Chat with Nancy is in its 9th season of podcasting. I find it very enjoyable because I can use each episode to share my vast knowledge and experience to homeowners, designers and do-it-yourselfers.
I cover everything from design to products to trends and then some. Podcasting is my 2nd passion--my first is the design and execution of a project.
Following projects from interviewing a potential client to its completion IS my passion.
I have never had a client on Home Design Chat with Nancy but today I am excited to have Peggy share her experiences from the first meeting about the scope of work and how I came to be her designer.
This project took longer than anticipated due to some unforeseen situations so, with that being said, this podcast is part 1.
I hope you enjoy it and look forward to next week when we continue with part 2 of "Peggy's remodel."

Making choices about countertops for your remodel can be very confusing since there are so many materials to chose from, but we will talk about the pros and cons of both Corian© and Quartz.
These products are manmade and differ from natural stone. FYI: Quartzite is a natural stone often confused with Quartz.
Nancy chats with Kristin Girard, Spec Development Manager with Hallmark Building Supply. As a supplier of both Corian© and quartz to the design community, Kristin is well-versed in the characteristics and benefits of both materials.

At the end of the current year and the beginning of the new year we are bombarded with predictions of what the trends will be for colors, kitchens and more.
We are now in the 7th month of 2024 and we are going to see how those predictions held up. Is subway tile out along with the checkerboard pattern? Are mosaics still popular?
Gil Olachea, owner of Ceramica in Scottsdale, is back with Nancy to talk about the tile trends of 2024. Which tiles are popular and which were not? Which tile trends didn't catch on and which ones are actually timeless and which ones are hanging on by a tile, so to speak!
As mentioned on the podcast, both Gil and Nancy are from the Southwest so their comments are based on their experiences in this area.
Please feel free to email Nancy@NancyHugo.com to share what the tile trends are in your part of the world.

Is the Do-It-Yourselfer, more commonly known know as a DIY, going away? Not according to USA who wrote that in February 2023, a survey found that 76% of homeowners between the ages of 18 and 24 and 73% of homeowners under 44 were doing DIY projects due to inflation.
The survey also found that homeowners in remote areas may prefer DIY projects because it may be difficult to find nearby professionals.
Nancy talks about the pros and cons of the homeowner doing his or her own projects
If you are a do-it-yourselfer, please contact Nancy (Nancy@nancyhugo.com) about your experiences. Were you happy with the results or did you have any mishaps or regrets?
And by the way, I am looking for guest podcasters to join Nancy and talk about anything having to do with the home. Remodeling, new construction, lighting, flooring, etc.

Minimalist design and open-plan living have been all the rage for the last few years, and I don’t see any signs of it stopping. Who doesn’t love a sleek look and a decluttered space, especially when it comes to the most used space in your home?
An invisible kitchen, also known as a hidden kitchen, is a minimalist design that integrates kitchen appliances and storage into the rest of the home. The goal is to keep conventional kitchen elements out of sight so the room blends in with the rest of the space.
Jan Rutgers, owner of Vestibule Designs and frequent guest on Home Design Chat with Nancy will explain several ideas to achieve the invisible kitchen idea in your home.
Why are these ideas taking off now?

In the past 3 weeks I have done podcasts hoping to answer questions for homeowners who are planning a kitchen remodel.
The topics covered were about planning a dream kitchen, setting a budget, finding a general contractor, avoiding change orders and working with a professional kitchen designer.
Last week the topic was achieving timeless kitchens.
The topic today is being aware of upgrades that people have regretted. We all learn from other peoples' mistakes so it's important to know what ideas and items are worth splurging on especially if you are working on a tight budget.
Items to ponder:
Items that should be included in your project:

The two main components of a great kitchen remodel are the cabinets and appliances. These items are the bulk of your budget and should be chosen carefully based on the money to be spent, the function of these items and the given space for your project. Of course, the countertop material, backsplashes, flooring and lighting will complete the look which will be subjects for future podcasts.
In this podcast Nancy with talk about the most popular cabinet color choices for 2024.
What is timeless and what finishes go with each design.
Nancy will also talk about the appliances no longer popular in today's kitchens and what appliances finishes compliment the look of the kitchen.

Many people look forward to celebrating the holidays with family & friends and showing off their newly remodeled kitchen. If this is your plan, you have to start now if you want it to happen before 2025.
That sounds so far into the future but it’s not. The holidays are only 6 months away. Time is flying faster than it did a few years ago. I hope I am not the only one who feels that way.
Planning your remodel
For many homeowners, planning a kitchen renovation is a first time experience is very overwhelming for most. Kitchens require careful attention to the functional details, your personal needs, you’re your budget.
Whether you’re looking to update or a total remodel, it’s so important to have a plan. That plan might include you as a do- it-yourselfer or getting a team of people starting with a designer and a general contractor. .
#1 – Have a vision of your dream kitchen.
#2 Make a list of what you don’t like about your existing kitchen
#3 Create a budget

We've heard of different ways of describing colors: happy colors, bright colors, trending colors, but never the loneliest color until now.
Sherwin-Williams has introduced a way to tell the first ever color story of the least tinted color, and perhaps bring it out of the shadows!
Also, to give homeowners and specifiers the confidence to choose colors that are less than popular, and how to use them!
Laurie Clark, Senior Designer Account Executive with Sherwin-Williams, is back to chat with Nancy about color, of course.
Here is some of the topics Laurie will discuss?
Sherwin-Williams usually has a color forecast, a color of the year and even color of the months.
Where did the idea of The Loneliest Color come from?
How was The Loneliest Color selected?
Where can consumers see more:

Did you know that different colors stir different feelings due to how our brain responds to each tone?
For example, bright, warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) stimulate energy and happiness while cool, subdued colors (blues, greens, purples) are soothing and calming.
Sarah Jones, Designer Services Representative with Dunn-Edwards Paint, is back with us to chat about the psychology of color and how it is used in the commercial setting as well as how it should be used in our homes.

Did you ever wonder about those popular renovation shows like the Property Brothers or This Old House and what really goes on behind the camera?
I came across a situation in Las Vegas where a young couple contracted with the Property Brothers and things went very wrong. It is now in litigation waiting for a jury trial in October, 2024. That led me to delve more into what people should know before they think about getting a free, but not so free, renovation.
To be fair, the Property Brothers was using Cineflix as the production company during this unfortunate project, but has since started their own production company. Whether or not they will be named in the lawsuit, is yet to be seen.
This is a good example of what you should know that you don't know before you do a remodel or renovation. Most problems can be avoided by using the right people giving you the correct advice.

When homeowners decide to remodel their kitchen they can get easily overwhelmed by the many choices in cabinets, appliances, etc. because this is not a project most people do often.
Since many of the same questions are asked of me when I meet potential clients, I thought I would chose 3 areas and explain the difference and benefits of each.
Today I am going to explain the differences between frame and frameless cabinets and what the pros and cons are, and how they effect your budget.
Countertops is another area that the homeowner should be aware of and know the benefits of the different materials. Quartz and quartzite are becoming very popular in today's kitchen remodels. How are these products differ and what you should be aware of when choosing your countertops.
Lastly, one of the most important items in the kitchen is the sink. Sinks come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials. Which sink would function in your kitchen is important to know.
Knowing all about the materials for your remodel before you start your project is very important; the decisions should not be left entirely to your contractor.

Remember when appliances came in the colors of the rainbow? Well, maybe not all the colors but in the 1950's and 60's pink, yellow and turquoise were popular choices for appliances.
The 70's brought us harvest gold and avocado refrigerators, sinks and accessories like toasters and even Tupperware to match. These color trends are gone, never to return I hope.

There is so much information for designing for Living in Place, Aging in Place, Universal Design or simply put, designs for everyone, so it made sense to record 3 podcasts covering these issues.
This is the first of 3 podcasts covering barrier free designs. If you are a designer or have specific challenges, you will find all the information and suggestions on these podcasts invaluable.

The newest kitchen and bath ideas are always introduced at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show that was combined with the International Builders Show which was held in Las Vegas.
The combined attendance for both shows was over 117,000 people who viewed more than 2,400 exhibits and walked 678,000 square feet. Whew! That is a lot of walking.
Jason Miller, current president of the National Kitchen & Bath Association's Arizona North Chapter, is back with us to talk about the new trends and ideas that impressed him and will most likely be available in 2024.
Sustainability from many of the manufacturers seemed to be the common theme at the show. Jason talks about the sustainable methods from some of the manufactures and what we can expect in that forum.
Natural, warmer, calming colors seems to be prevalent in many of the booths but appliances and plumbing fixtures introduced their colorful items to add to the softer color palettes.
Jason also described cabinet ideas for kitchens and bathrooms and new applications for countertop materials.

Several years ago I had the horrific misfortune of being scammed. I wrote about this experience and published it to all of my social media platforms in addition to sending it out to everyone I knew.
I didn't want anyone to go through what I did. Many people has experienced this same scam all over the country and have been interviewed on news programs and for news articles. I have been asked to talk about it in an interview but chose not to relive it.
As I said on the podcast, if you want to know more about how I was scammed, email me at Nancy@nancyhugo.com and I will send you a copy of my story.
So why am I doing a podcast about the scams of 2024 on Home Design Chat with Nancy? Of course, it has nothing to do with design, but I feel it is so important to be aware of the scams that unsuspecting people get caught up in. It could happen to anyone.
My guest, Chris Diamond, is my web specialist and has helped be with some "mini" scams that I fell into when I was not careful. We will talk about 11 different scams that have caused victims to lose money.

Many times designers and homeowners want unique items that sets their project apart from the norm. The difficulty is to find the craftsman that can make their design a reality.
Nancy's guest, Steve Appolloni, owner of EuroFe Remodeling, is just that person.
His background is very interesting and his creativity and knowledge of kitchen design and remodeling makes him a valuable asset to the projects.
EuroFe Remodeling is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, although their cabinets have been installed throughout the country.
Steve has patented an indestructible line of cabinets he calls Lifetime Cabinets. These cabinets are custom built in the USA, and have been installed in dormitories and fire stations.

Finding a Christmas gift for friends and family is, many times, difficult and frustrating. If you chose the wrong gift it could go in the back of the closet until you visit that person. Then they could display for you to see, or if it's clothing, they could wear it while you are there.
The wrong gift could also be re-gifted unless you know the recipient of the re-gifted item.
It's a whole different ballgame when you give a plant for the holidays, or a birthday, or house warming. There is a whole list of questions before you purchase plants as gifts.
Joe Zanzerra, owner of Plant Solutions in Scottsdale, is back with Nancy to chat about plant giving as gifts.
We will discuss these plant topics and hopefully help you decide what plant to give or not to give:
Solution:
Find a local nursery, buy a gift certificate and allow the recipient to choose his or her own beautiful houseplant.

We are at the end of 2023. Where has the time gone. Seems like it was yesterday that we had to get used to saying the year "2000." It's all about the numbers and today Nancy will talk all about the numbers of kitchen design.
All the rules of design and the components having to do with the kitchen incorporates rules of design and the sizes of cabinets, appliances, etc. If you are remodeling or building a new home, you are either doing the design yourself or consulting with a designer.
You can not have a successful project without a plan or you will plan to fail.
Listen to Nancy explain what you should know about your project. Take notes to insure that you have a good handle on the necessary dimensions for islands, walkways, appliances, cabinets and lighting.

Do you know what the Internet of Things (IoT) is? Are you familiar with security technology or are you just interested in the newest entertainment technology? Today Nathan Thomas, director of business development with Artisan systems, will answer all my questions about technology in layman's terms.
Internet of things (IoT)
Different items require various apps on your phone to operate each one. This is a great challenge when trying to do simple tasks and having to switch between these various applications.
Major players in the security industry
Large providers are trying to capitalize on providing more than just a security system. They will get their foot in the door by offering a free package of basic hardware that doesn’t even meet the needs for basic home security.
What you get with Experience
Make the home, smart and convenient by using one application to control all the various items in the home with ease of operation. The monthly bill is far less costly with the style of providing technology and the customer experience source through the roof.
Ease of Use
Your technology works together in harmony with one simple app on your phone or tablet to control each of these devices. And, they talk to each other!

One of the greatest challenges for a kitchen designer is to create a design that the customer appreciates aesthetically and simultaneously provides them with a functionally well designed kitchen. Remodeling a kitchen is an overwhelming task, but is also one of the largest investments you will make. The most expensive items for a kitchen remodel are the appliances and the cabinets.
My guest is Derek Byler, owner of Arizona Custom Cabinets, who has experience in custom and box cabinets. We will discuss the pros and cons of these cabinetry categories. We will also cover the differences between frame and frameless cabinets.
If you are remodeling, and I stress this constantly, know the products you are choosing. You will have them for a long time, hopefully!

What's going on in the world of home design? This is the time of year when all the manufacturers are introducing the new trends, new lighting fixtures, new appliances, new furniture & fabrics, and everything else you can imagine. Nancy talks about the the 5 industry shows happening in Las Vegas at the end of January. She will be attending the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show and the International Builders Show held at the Las Vegas Convention Center and will be sharing her experiences over the next few weeks after she gets back to Phoenix.
It's important to keep up with trends if you are remodeling or building a new home, but not necessarily follow all the suggestions you read in magazines and on HGTV. The main goal of these podcasts is to educate the listeners on designs, trends and products. Do your research before you purchase the products you will need for your projects.

Enjoy this "Best of" podcast originally recorded in December, 2021. We had any comments regarding the information Paul McAlary brought to light during our conversation.
One of the greatest challenges for a kitchen designer is to create a design that the customer appreciates aesthetically and simultaneously provides them with a functionally well designed kitchen. It’s equally difficult to just not make any mistakes. And sadly, that’s something very few kitchen designers can actually accomplish.
Paul McAlary, president of Main Line Kitchen Design in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. chats with Nancy about safety in kitchen design.
In the last few years, Paul said he has yet to pick up a kitchen trade magazine without a featured kitchen on either its front or back cover having major mistakes. Often they possess one of the possibly fatal design flaws listed below.

At the start of 2020, many of us were forced to reconfigure our homes into multi-multi-functional spaces that could accommodate the needs of working parents and home-schooled children. The novelty of "work from home" has worn off, and we’ve all had a year and a half to adjust to the new normal.
Jem Funk, Interior Designer and Lighting Designer, is back with Nancy to talk about trends that designers predict will be huge for last quarter of 2021 into 2022.

Putting the finishing touches on your design project can either make it or break it! Knowing the right size and shape of the chandelier, and more importantly, how high to hang the fixture is something not everyone is familiar with. Jem Funk, interior designer and lighting designer, is the perfect guest to give tips on choosing light fixtures. Jem has been with us on several occasions and always shares her knowledge with us.
These podcasts are meant to share information but, as always, Jem and Nancy recommend working with a professional on your projects.
ASSESS LIVING ROOM LIGHT DIMENSIONS
A simple light sizing calculation can prove a useful guide to scaling a pendant light to a living room or another space such as a bedroom.
Measure the length and width of the room in feet and add the two figures together.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE LIGHT OVER A DINING TABLE
A light like a chandelier or modern statement pendant that’s one half to two thirds the width of the table below in diameter will be large enough to draw the eye, but won’t verge into overpowering territory.
With light sizing, bear in mind that the height at which the light is hung is important.
SIZE LIGHTING TO A KITCHEN ISLAND
Rather than a single large light, hang a series over an island or a dining table.
Smaller multiple pendants can work well in a kitchen or dining area.
FACTOR IN LIGHTING SHAPE
‘A globe-shaped pendant looks great when oversized.
Round or tiered design has some height as well as width, a pendant light could have appreciable scale width-wise, but be of a relatively modest height.
TAKE MATERIALS INTO ACCOUNT
Glass or wicker pendants can be bigger as there is a transparency to the fitting but usually pendants are constructed of a combination of materials.

What do scams have to do with Home design? Nothing, but our lives have changed and using this podcast to educate about various things is what we’re all about.
Scammers are inventive and keep coming up with new ways to con people out of their money. Nancy and Chris Diamond chat about different types of scams and how you can protect yourself.
Scammers do their homework and find information about you before they make contact. They use a variety of techniques, including flattery and emotional manipulation, to draw you in. Older people may be more vulnerable because scammers often target people who:
How to spot a scam
Some scams are very clever and they can be hard to spot. Things to look out for include:
As a general rule, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
How to protect yourself
Scammers are clever and ruthless, and they'll do anything to get hold of your personal details. Be very careful about who you give your personal details to.
Never send money to someone you don’t know or trust. And remember - your bank or the police will never ask for your PIN or password or ask you to transfer funds for fraud reasons.

Nancy's guest this week is Sharon Sherman CKD, ASID, CID, an award-winning designer residing in Bergen Country, New Jersey. Sharon has been published in many magazines and newspapers and has appeared on several TV shows.
The pandemic has resulted in many lifestyle changes, one of them being the necessity for a home office. Many of us will most likely continue working from home and having a space to work efficiently is a must.
Sharon and Nancy talk about some basic considerations for a home office that will help you achieve a work space you will enjoy using:
Home Office Location: Where do you want to work? It's very important to consider how you will be using the space to determine the location in the home. Form Follows Function: A desk sized for the task and a comfortable chair are the first items you will need. If you don’t have a work surface, things tend to pile up.. Storage: Try to have an additional place to keep some of your things other than the desk. Even in a paperless office, there are still documents you will need to keep safe. Technology: Staying Connected with a wireless hub and a fast connection that will allow you to work on your laptop or tablet from the desk or that comfy chair. Lighting: . Make sure you have adequate lighting to prevent eye strain and illuminate the tasks at hand. If you are having virtual meetings, make sure there is good lighting in front of you as well as on the sides. The people you are meeting with need to see your face. Climate Control: It is hard to work when you are too hot or too cold. Make sure you are comfortable so you will want to spend time in the space and be productive. Some final thoughts: * Keep your space organized no matter the size. A desktop file is perfect for active projects. * Decorate it so you will want to spend time there. Use colors you like to be around. * Keep the office in the office area. Try to not let office items wander. * Add some plants for natural decoration and stress reduction. * Create a chalk board or wipe board with paint. Keep those great ideas and goals where you can see them.

In our last podcast Nancy and Les Sturtevant, owner of Designer Dream Kitchen Studio in Scottsdale, Az, discussed the key items to be addressed when planning your kitchen remodel. This week they continued that topic with several more important key points to be considered:
Expanding the Space: Removing non load bearing walls might be a way to open up your floorplan and increase the size of the kitchen. This could create a large open floorplan that would be more inviting giving you more use for the space.
Efficiency is Key: Setting up work zones or task areas will increase the function and efficiency of your space. Think zones when you are planning a bake center, clean up area, prep area and seating area.
Islands are more than Pretty: Islands come in all shapes and sizes. They could have sinks and appliances or just plain work islands. Remember to leave adequate circulation around the island. Most islands are 36 inches above the floor making it convenient as a workspace and seating with bar stools.
Don't follow Trends: Most kitchens are remodeled once every 10 years or more. Add color with accessories or window treatments rather than bright colored appliances or cabinets that you might tire of after a short time.
Ask and Expert: The kitchen is the most complicated and expensive room in the house to design, so paying for a bit of expert advice at the start of a project can take the stress out of the process and save you money in the long run.

Nancy's guest this week is Les Sturtevant, owner of Designer Dream Kitchen Studio in Scottsdale, AZ. Les and Nancy discussed these key items to be addressed when planning your kitchen remodel:
Forgetting to plan a realistic Your Budget - Do this before you tear out your cabinets!
Plan for the Big Picture - To look professional, chose all the finishes for your project before you start.
Choosing your Appliances First - Your appliances should fit your space, your budget and your lifestyle.
Plumbing is so important - Don't avoid moving the sink if it is important to a functional design.
Turn the Lights On - Think about your general, ambient and task lighting, add enough outlets for all counter appliances.
Don’t forget the Hood - ventilation is one of the most important appliances in addition to it being part of the aesthetics.
Not Asking an Expert - The kitchen is the most complicated – and expensive – room in the house to design, so paying for a bit of expert advice at the start of a project can take the stress out of the process and save you money in the long run.

Nancy's guest this week is Dan Hugo, a computer engineer with years of experience. The subject was the Internet of Things and just how safe it really is. The more functionalities (apps) you add to your smartphone, the more information you store in the device. This could make smartphones and anything connected to them vulnerable to many different types of attacks.
Don't be naive and think you have nothing to worry about. Listen to this podcast. As mentioned on the podcast here are 9 security measures you can take to help secure your devices:
1. Install reputable internet security software on your computers, tablets, and smartphones. For instance, Norton Security Deluxe can provide real-time protection against existing and emerging malware, including ransomware and viruses.
2. Use strong and unique passwords for device accounts, Wi-Fi networks, and connected devices. Don’t use common words or passwords that are easy to guess, such as “password” or “123456.”
3. Be aware when it comes to apps. Always make sure you read the privacy policy of the apps you use to see how they plan on using your information and more.
4. Do your research before you buy. Devices become smart because they collect a lot of personal data. While collecting data isn’t necessarily a bad thing, you should know about what types of data these devices collect, how it’s stored and protected, if it is shared with third parties, and the policies or protections regarding data breaches.
5. Know what data the device or app wants to access on your phone. If it seems unnecessary for the app’s functionality or too risky, deny permission.
6. Use a VPN, like Norton Secure VPN, which helps to secure the data transmitted on your home or public Wi-Fi.
7. Check the device manufacturer’s website regularly for firmware updates.
8. Use caution when using social sharing features with these apps. Social sharing features can expose information like your location and let people know when you’re not at home. Cybercriminals can use this to track your movements. That could lead to a potential cyberstalking issue or other real-world dangers.
9. Never leave your smartphone unattended if you’re using it in a public space. In crowded spaces, you should also consider turning off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth access if you don’t need them. Some smartphone brands allow automatic sharing with other users in close proximity.
