We are meant to be self-aware, and others focused. Self-aware: "Let us test and examine our ways, and return to the Lord!" (Leviticus 3:40) Others focused: "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." (Galatians 6:2) 

"For am, I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ". (Galatians 1:10)
