DYK the climate crisis ain't a standalone issue, isolated from all else? It is in fact interwoven and intersecting with all areas of our lives and the action we take must reflect that! What does that mean? It means it's really easy to engage with The Green New Deal and intersectional environmentalism on a daily basis. In fact, you're probably already doing it! This episode is part two with Theresa Godin as she dissects On Fire, a book by Naomi Klein about the burning case for a Green New Deal. Jump into episode one here and then get into this one!

Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. This week on the pod I chat with Stephanie Guyatt, owner and operator of Under One Sun, a group of artisans from all around the world who are overcoming poverty and restoring dignity through artistry. Beyond the incredible upcycled use of materials such as 55 gallon steel drums, broken glass tumbled smooth, paper, and scrap aluminum and copper, we also chat social justice, the 'white saviour' complex, and being part of a global and local community to restore dignity to all. The work we're doing is important but what about the kids? Ocean Heroes Alexander and Leo (12 and 10 years old) chat on today's podcast along with Danny Witte of Lonely Whale about the work they are doing to reduce single-use take out containers in their home town, and how you are never too young to start taking action for the planet.

"By no means are straws the biggest threat to ocean health, but we use them as a symbol, as a gateway conversation to the dangers of all plastics."

Extinction of a species? When it comes to symptoms of climate change, that feels serious. This week I’m chatting with Jolyon Collier, founder of Counting Coral, a non-profit organization working tirelessly beneath the waves to restore our coral reefs. We start with the basics, such as what is coral and why is it bleaching before getting into direct actions we can take to help Counting Coral save these stunning marine life habitats, and how reducing our reliance on the meat industry is actually the first step towards the planet’s salvation.

Today I’m chatting with Sara Brigz of Let That Shit Go, all about decluttering for your mental health! We cover tips for decluttering, how to get rid of things sustainably, ways to discover your values and motivators, and how a tidy room can be a tidy mind. I know for me that the space around me if very often a reflection of how busy, tired, stressed, relaxed or anxious my brain is at any given time, and I can often feel better about my situation by tidying up all the kids toys or laundry or doing the dishes. Well not the dishes, I don’t really do those.. Sara has such great tips today, and it was so lovely to chat with her again. Beyond the bubble of our own households beyond the individual actions we talk privilege, climate justice, and community activism, as well as all about Polly’s book More Than a Plastic Bag, which I just got as an ebook and it’s so so helpful and full of action items to help us change the world. If you are BRAND NEW to zero waste, hold up, and swing over to some other episodes like episode 55 zero waste swaps, or episode 19 Random Acts of Green, there’s lots of episodes for those who are just hearing about zero waste for the first time. In today’s chat with Polly we upend a lot of typical zero waste ideals and expand our horizons to take on larger climate action, so if you’re ready to get a little scared but also super charged to do more for the planet in the time we have left, join me in this chat, because it is oh so good. Nathen and Josy of Responsible Van Life are two amazing individuals who are educating others around the world on sustainability and responsible living while travelling! Up until recently they’ve been travelling around New Zealand in their van, living out that slow and authentic travel that you’re going to get to hear all about in today’s episode. We talk slowing things down, what living in a van has looked like for them, and how getting to know each other and taking responsibility in this adventure we call life is vitally important to our planet. I am happy to be back and I can’t wait to share this with you, so let’s go!

I'm taking a holiday, so this week I'm rewinding to April 2019 to a conversation with Bill Callaghan, life long farmer from Lindsay, Ontario! This is a favourite conversation of mine and it centres around sustainable agriculture, soil health and the harmful results of pesticides on our health and the environment. Stay tuned for brand new episodes to come after my hiatus basking in the sunshine and spending quality time with my family away from the microphone. Lot's of love and happy August!

Reducing pesticides, cover cropping, adding nutrients to soil at an industrial scale, feeding the worms and more, this episode is all about sustainable agriculture and crops with life-long farmer Bill Callaghan!

DID YOU KNOW of all the edible food wasted in the world, ONE QUARTER of that food waste is all it would take to feed the billions of people suffering from food insecurity and poverty in the world. AND you can make a difference. Today I speak with Tessa Clarke, co-founder of Olio, the world’s first neighbour to neighbour food sharing app. We talk preventing food waste and other household items from going to landfill, we talk food insecurity and reducing the stigma associated with food poverty, and the work that we can do on an individual scale to end world hunger. It’s a great conversation and lots of ways to take action so let’s dive in.

The Sex Ed class you should have had in school. Before we get into today’s chat a few bits of information: (1) Lisa uses necessarily explicit language in some cases to be as clear as possible. (2) This conversation focuses on plastic-free sex between a male and female partner because the topic is fertility awareness as a method of birth control, but that being said I think every woman should be aware of how their bodies work for optimal health so look into it either way. (3) We don’t cover condoms, IUD’s or any other form of barrier method, we’re just talking about fertility awareness as a form of birth control and the effects of hormonal contraceptives like the Pill on our overall health. And (4) my views in the episode are my views, and Lisa’s views are her views backed by studies and years of research. It’s up to you to take it or leave it. But if you come away from today’s topic with anything I want it to be that you deserve a healthy awareness of your reproductive health as well as a loving, safe relationship.

Ready for a radical way to live by your values for the good of everyone? Environmental activist Carlyn Grebleski speaks today about how to live zero waste and how to take further action to reduce your impact and go beyond remembering your reusable water bottle! Grab her quick definition below as well as links to blog posts and how to get in touch.

zero-waste:

“Zero waste as you’ll see on this blog is the effort to reduce the individual’s waste of limited resources while also avoiding, as much as possible, giving money to companies that encourage the misuse or irresponsible use of the world’s resources. A resource is anything that we can make use of. Wasting something can be throwing something away so it isn’t used, using more than necessary so that we need more financial resources (money) or natural resources to make up for using too much, or generally using a lot of resources on things we don’t need; one way to think of it is resource frugality.”

Zero waste living and saving the planet is not just for the here and now (though we have to ACT NOW in order for there to be a future), it's also about raising up a generation that cares for the planet, that create a society that respects the earth and all humankind, and can basically be some decent human beings who don't just put themselves first. Today I chat with Sarah Robertson Barnes of Sustainable in the Suburbs about raising up this very kind of human, and in the process teaching ourselves how to be better and do better too.

Food waste is avoidable in SO MANY WAYS but it's not just up to the individual. Second Harvest, Canada's Largest food rescue charity is hard at work to connect farmers and distributers who have a surplus of edible, perishable foods, with the people who don't have access to fresh healthy food on a daily basis. Check out my conversation with CEO of Second Harvest Lori Nikkel about the damage food waste does to the environment, the obvious solution of taking the surplus to give to those in need, and exactly how Second Harvest accomplishes such a monumental task.

The age of fossil fuels will come to an end sooner or later. Either we adapt to new (old) options before we run out or we run out and have to adapt. Electric vehicles are becoming more high-tech, more reliable, and more affordable than ever before and the time to make the switch was yesterday (but seriously, next time you need a car, really think about this)! Bill Bruesch, electric vehicle enthusiast talks with me today about how electric vehicles work, what the benefits are to the planet and the resiliency that can come from adopting an EV for your next vehicle. Ready to reduce your dependence on fossil fuels? Let’s hit the road!

Minimalism is a tool for living a meaningful life with less stuff to clutter up the place! Like the phrase 'zero waste' it implies an extreme lifestyle of all or nothing but that's hardly the case! Minimalism, like low-waste living is a sliding scale, where anyone can approach it at the level they need. Today I chatted with The Minimalist Mom, Amy, about her minimalist philosophy and how to use this lifestyle to find space for what really matters!

Wanna go low waste? Step one: don't buy anything.  This episode is all about avoiding the trap of consumerism when trying to reduce the amount of waste we produce. There is no need to buy almost anything (and certainly not buy anything new) when you are striking out on your first zero waste adventure. We need to resist the urge to buy all the beautiful products that are being made available to us and instead, begin at home with what you already own. Hope you enjoy today's conversation.

Some call it frugal, I call it living simply. Today we talk all about saving money, living with purposeful scarcity and the ways in which we can extend the lifespan of the objects we own to prevent them from going to landfill too early.   Today we also talk about an awesome program we use called You Need A Budget (YNAB). If you look up the program and decide it's the budgeting program for you, use our referral link to get one month free (which gives us a month free too, which is great).
