Even though there are images of bitcoins and other shiny tokens online, there is no physical cash-type cryptocurrency of value in physical existence. It is purely digital and all of its transactions are recorded on a digital ledger - known as a blockchain - through an online network.
This digital asset class does have a store of value, meaning it will retain predictable purchasing power in the future. Bitcoin has been compared to gold for this characteristic. The value is determined by the cryptocurrency investment market.
