It’s the first episode of season three, and it’s shaping up to be blazon-ly brilliant. We’ve got top-notch tips, educational analogies and the thoughtful musings of our startup-founding guests! We’re bringing you lessons and insights from every sector, with detailed conversations about how our guests have got where they are. Turn your brain on… you’re going to want to pay attention!
This week, we’ve got Marino Ramirez, founder of Eva Latam, the insurance startup providing affordable and convenient insurance in Latin America and breaking the legacy cycle. It’s important work, but he’s also made it profitable, something that is never straightforward! Building something that makes both money and a difference isn’t easy, and we want to know how he’s done it.
With a background in insurance, Marino brought his corporate brain to his startup and when paired with his passion for his work, it’s proving to be a winning combination. He’s seen both sides of the coin, and he knows what works and what doesn’t. However, leaving a secure and well-paid corporate job is never going to be an easy decision, especially when the move is to the rocky world of startups! So, why did Marino do it? And does he ever regret his decision?
Demos and Nargis will be raring to pick Marino’s brains on every aspect of corporate vs startup, and they’ll also be getting to grips with how to find support in the startup world. Whilst being a founder is exciting, it can also feel lonely. Any problems are your own to fix, and sometimes you might miss having someone give you a pat on the back after a hard day. So, what advice does Marino have? Well… we’d be spoiling the episode if we told you that!
With our guest having donned a lot of different hats across his career, we'll also be talking about fulfilment at work, and how the safety and security of employment isn’t always synonymous with being happy. As Marino says, now he gets to wake up with founder-focused worries in the middle of the night and to take terrifying risks, but somehow, it’s… brilliant! It might sound ridiculous, but the world of startups never promised to be sensible!
Marino's startup is fuelled more by his heart for positive change, than by turning a profit (although that always has to feature, of course!). We’d all like to know how to make a meaningful business a successful one, and Eva Latam has done both. According to Marino, this journey has something to do with reading and… TikTok? It’s time for some serious brain-picking on this one, because whatever Marino is doing is working, and the proof is really in the (insurance-flavoured) pudding.
We’re also keeping Marino on his toes, and we’re bringing some tough questions. Do you know which Latin American country has the most startups? And how many languages are spoken in Latin America? Well, you will by the end of the episode! Let’s test our guest!
