Shame doesn’t have other redeeming qualities like other negative emotions have. For example, sadness and grief, when lovingly felt can heal hurt and help you grow resilience. Anger, when lovingly felt, can drive action to instill real change. Fear, when lovingly felt, can cue you into your deepest desires, helping you know yourself more. Guilt, when lovingly felt, can help you center yourself back into your values to align your actions.

Shame, when felt (notice how it can’t be lovingly felt), makes you feel worthless. Like pile of garbage. Like you’re incapable and unworthy of good. Of beauty. Of growth.

That’s because shame isn’t a pure, whole emotion. It’s a cover. It’s a shield from other negative emotions; other emotions that are valuable and important; shame covers them up. So we can’t access them.
