S02E04 is an awesome trip to Los Angeles and a discussion with long time casting director John Frank Levey. A casting director for 35 plus years, known for such iconic shows as ER, The West Wing and one of my favourites, Shameless. John has just released a book called ‘Right For the Role’ – hence the name of this episode, but as we find out in this interview, the book isn’t primarily about actors being right for the role as one might assume by the title, but so much more.
In this awesome discussion we discuss John's love of people and their stories, how people interact with each other and how he draws on that to find the right cast for a show.
We discuss the difference of bringing 'process' into the audition room instead of your 'work', and how this can be a huge negative for the casting process, because if you need to show your 'process' in the audition room, can you be fully ready when on set.
We dive into the world of self-tapes in the modern and post Covid era with some interesting insights into the right preparation required an dhow to deliver a quality submission that will get you cast.
And we finish up the discussion with a look into character development and how your instrument as an actor is yourself.
You can follow John on Instagram and you can purchase a copy of his book in all formats including digital via Amazon.com.
