Personally I never did. 
Until it started costing me 10s of thousands of dollars hiring consultants and mentors to help me further myself and my businesses. 

This is a lesson I had to learn the hard way. 
It was all built up by low level thinking and surrounding myself with the wrong people in the first place. While putting trust into "trusted opinions" not ones with authority on the topic. 
Don't make my mistake check your references ALWAYS
