In today’s episode of BizableTV, Former Story Brand COO Tim Schurrer shares with you the secrets necessary for success – whether in business or in life. Tim outlines how you can reconcile the tension between contentment and striving by reevaluating your definition of success through engaging anecdotes.

Winning at work can greatly jeopardize your personal life and well-being, so it is important to be content with the less quantifiable aspects of life and focus on what matters. Though it may not come as a new revelation, few heed the message that adopting an altruistic mindset is integral to a double-win: success at both work and at life.

While helping others win often feels counterintuitive, you may experience even greater success in doing so. However, you shouldn’t assist others solely to get ahead. On its basis, true success comes with serving others and helping them win, without minding who gets recognition.

Here are the key takeaways from today’s episode:

  • Introducing Tim Schurrer, who discusses the secret society of success – and how to become a part of it.
  • Why success shouldn’t be singularly defined by fame, material trappings, or quantitative metrics.
  • Success is the assist.
  • What is the spotlight mindset, and how does it prevent you from finding fulfillment?
  • How learning to identify and navigate the spotlight mindset can help you win at work and succeed in life.

In today’s episode of BizableTV, Mental Performance Coach & Speaker Lauren Johnson explains how you can develop the necessary mental skills that will make you invincible and adaptable. Through her experience with athletics, she illustrates the ways her identity has been shaped by belief and action.

Belief, in turn, is shaped by identity and action. It can be difficult to shift your paradigm when it is being clouded by blind spots and intrusive emotions. However, the power to choose your response, beginning with the separation of truth from feelings, can alter the demarcation of power. Adversity is inevitable – it’s the response that determines which outcomes you receive.

Key takeaways from today’s episode:

  • 0:50 – Introducing Lauren Johnson, a mental performance coach and speaker who specializes in performance psychology.
  • 3:42 – How growth comes from learning to redefine our relationship with the problem.
  • 6:14 – Get advice for those dealing with uncertainty or negative feedback.
  • 9:35 – How to focus on the present in order to manage fear.
  • 16:28 – How Lauren’s epiphany while working at Starbucks was a breakthrough.
  • 20:22 – How Lauren’s work with the New York Yankees was able to help a player cast away limiting beliefs.
  • 26:40 – Why finding someone you trust to elicit honest feedback and identify blind spots is important.
  • 32:15 – How to shift your mindset to navigate negativity to make progress quickly.

If you're like me, you feel this last year has been let's say…..“CHAOTIC!”

Whether it be in our own lives, business and most certainly politically and all the challenges of COVID-19.

When chaos strikes and smacks you in the face, what are some specific steps to help you?

I often wonder and struggle with this myself, and this week I have Marianne Renner, a highly sought-after Leadership Coach, trainer and keynote speaker on the show to help us with this.

She has inspired thousands of leaders to move from chaos to clarity and become all they were meant to become.

Marianne is the author of the Chaos to Clarity Success Journal, aimed at helping leaders build the confidence and courage to make their wildest dreams come alive.

She has helped thousands of leaders across the U.S. overcome fears, doubts and limiting beliefs. Her live coaching and training programs teach practical tools for navigating through change, building strong relationships and changing mental narratives that hold you back.

Marianne understands the importance of setting goals and having a clear plan to reach those goals. She has owned two businesses.

She was a bodybuilding champion and highly sought-after fitness instructor, having led two youth dance teams to win Gold Medals in the National Junior Olympics.

Marianne holds a Master’s degree in Integrated Marketing Communications.

So you have heard of value-based pricing and the potential it brings for higher rates.

But how do you actually do it?

What questions should you be asking your clients?

In today's episode I unpack 3 simple questions you can ask your clients when moving towards value-based pricing or what I like to call outcome-based pricing.

Once you understand this, you can then position your pricing in close relation to that value and get the rates you deserve.

The premise of today’s podcast is about the book I hope to write someday called The Magic of Pricing Big: The Simple Secret to Getting Paid What You're REALLY Worth!

I share a few of these strategies with you and how they can help you with your pricing going into 2021.

Two key concepts include:

#1 to think BIG when it comes to your value, pricing and get your mindset right, otherwise the higher fees, bigger contracts will never come.

#2 is using the power of anchoring BIG dropping Anchor bombs in conjunction with price options in your pricing strategy for your products and services.

Contrary to popular belief, the price you charge for your products and services is NOT tied together!.......This may be one of the main reasons you’re not charging those higher tier rates that you know you deserve.

This comes from one of my favorite books by Dan S. Kennedy called No B.S. Marketing to the Affluent.

It's called this the Price-Product Link and how restrictive this is in getting those higher tier rates and engagements.

Price is not tied to your product or service and as soon as you disconnect those two things in your own mind about your own products and services, you’ll be liberated to make a great deal more money and to have much greater success appealing to affluent customers or clients.

We have all done this before! We get that email or phone call from a prospect, and it’s looking like a great client and great opportunity. So you start with a discovery call or meeting, and the client seems interested like it’s going to be a great fit and eager for your services. So you craft that perfect proposal, sharpen your pen, and if your following what I preach on this show, provide them with three pricing options, each demonstrating great value around their needs. Then the client starts asking questions, wants this or that clarified, and keeps coming back with more questions and never actually commits or worst yet has ghosted you!

Has this ever happen to you? I sure have and I wanted to share a few of my thoughts and strategies with you this week and how I have handled this over the years.

I am going to try something different this week! Pricing Q&A from listeners!

Pricing questions today:

  • Steve asks about an annual event that he does and how does supply & demand and scarcity play a factor in pricing?
  • Alex asks about implementing 3 pricing options for an online product that he is getting ready to offer.
  • David is asking about doing a monthly retainer for $500 and then billing at $200/hour and whether or not I think this is a good idea or not.

If you like this format and would like me to have more pricing questions like these let me know.

Shoot me your pricing questions to: paul@paulklein.net

This week I have a Tech Tip for you. It's called Rumbl.....what is it? What does it do and can it help you with your business?

A few weeks ago, my son told me about this new app called Rumbl….. that's Rumbl with no "E."

I had never heard of it or knew what it's about, but you know kids these days are always the first to know about the latest trends and apps before they go mainstream.

So I did a little investigative work and thought I would share my findings with you so you can decide if you want to jump in on it or if it's right for you or not.

Rumbl Tag Line: The easiest way to make short videos. Host channels, create unlimited episodes, find your audience, and even monetize your videos.

  • It’s a short form video app
  • Its like Tic Tok and Twitter combined with out all the weirdness
  • There is no desktop version
  • You can connect to your other social apps within the Rumbl app
  • Record short form videos around your area of expertise or niche
  • The app has a monetization element for premium channels
  • To become a premium channel, you have to post 21 videos in a week (3 per day)

Every consultant, freelancer, or personal brand can become a better speaker by attending the SCORRE Conference with Ken Davis because of 3 benefits I share on this week's podcast. I recently participated in Ken Davis's SCORRE Conference in Nashville, TN…November 4th through 7th. I had heard of Ken Davis for many years and have always wanted to attend, but just never had the chance. If you don't know Ken, he is a really neat guy. He is an author, speaker, coach, and I highly recommend his book Fully Alive as well as Secrets of Dynamic Communication.

If you're like me, you're probably impressed by a great speaker that can hold a crowd and come across all cool, collected, and in control. At least that's what I think, and I am always watching and learning from those on the stage as I want to be a better speaker as I know many of you do too. But the truth is no matter how prepared or how many times I have done a presentation, and I still get nervous, think I sound like an idiot and hate watching replays of my talks. I "um" and "uh" way too much and not polished at all, far from being a professional speaker. I also know that speaking can be a big part of your brand and business, not for the money but for the exposure and getting your ideas out in the world. You must be able to communicate effectively from the boardroom to the podcast!

Join me as I share the 3 benefits of attending SCORRE and how you can become a better speaker too.

This week I want to share with you some secrets.

Many of you don’t know this about me, but when I was younger, I was in a hair band!

YES…..A hair band!

That wasn’t a typo. Back in the 1980s, I was, in fact, part of an aspiring rock band. We wanted to be the next big rockstars up there with bands like Mötley Crüe and Poison.

It was during this time making music and trying to reach stardom that I learned a little about the business side of the industry, the common model of “pay to play” and why it isn’t sustainable for profit.

On this episode of The Pricing is Positioning Podcast, I talk to you about this and how I went from being an aspiring rocker in a hair band to a high-end business consultant.

Plus, by the end of the episode, you will hear the three tips I give to getting paid what you’re worth!

In this episode I talk about:

  • 3 tips on how to get paid what you’re worth
  • How I went from being in a hair band to a high-end consultant
  • What pay to play is and why it’s not good for consultants
  • Lessons I learned in the music and consulting industry

We also talk about project profitability and how you can take the steps to go from time-based billing to outcome-based billing in your own career. There’s this and much more in tune for you on this weeks episode of the Pricing is Positioning podcast!

It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting out or have been in the business for years. There’s one thing that can doom any business at any stage.

When I first began my journey in consulting and owning my own business, I had no idea where to start. So I started by taking notes and asking questions. One of the most common pieces of advice I’d receive in the beginning stage was always the same:

“You’re gonna need a small business loan.”

This didn’t make sense to me.

In this episode, I want to talk to you about why you don’t always need that small business loan and how debt can be the anchor that drags your business down. I also stress the importance of starting small and share with you how I approached employees and other factors I had to consider when I started my own consulting business.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics

-The one thing that can doom your business

-The initial steps I took to owning my own business

-The advice I was given when I started out.

  • Why you don’t need the small business loan everyone says you need.

  • Important factors to consider in the beginning.

This week I want to talk to you about pricing options.

Having multiple pricing options are extremely important for your clients to have. They allow your clients to have multiple opportunities to engage with you.

When you only give your clients a single price option, it's like giving them an ultimatum….take it or leave it!

By giving them pricing options, it then becomes a question in your client's mind of…….. “not SHOULD we work with you, but HOW we are going to work with you.”

But there is such a thing as having too many choices and too many options as your clients will shut down, be indecisive or worse, look to your competition. Something I’ve learned over the years as a consultant with pricing options is there’s a sweet spot of the right amount that you want to provide to your clients during the proposal process.

In this episode, I’m going to share with you how to determine what’s right for you and why having too many might be hindering your business growth instead of maximizing your value potential.

So I am excited to share my thoughts on this subject with you, including some interesting studies and what the experts in behavioral economics are saying about the topic.

In this episode, I talk about:

-What Choice overload is and how to avoid it.

-The value of having different pricing options

-The difference between System 1 thinking and System 2 thinking and which one is better

  • How to know when you’re diminishing your returns with your pricing options

  • The number of options that I recommend to freelance consultants

This week I wanted to share with you how I recently failed a product launch and why I loved it.

I launched my group coaching course or tried to monetize my personal brand and failed miserably. I got one sign up. Now you may be thinking, “Wait a minute, Paul, you failed and you loved it? I don’t believe that.” It’s true, I failed, but there were many lessons I learned because of it.

In this episode, I am going to share the lessons I learned from failure, what I did wrong, and how I am going to fix it for next time. My hope is that you will find some key takeaways so you can avoid them. Or perhaps, more importantly, come to realize that failing isn’t the worst thing that can happen, instead, it may actually be the best thing that can happen. And so, yes, I failed and I loved every minute of it.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Building my consulting business and my brand
  • One of my most notable corporate failures and how email almost got me fired
  • Webinar failures, recordings (or lack thereof), and other tech issues
  • Launching a six-week group coaching, why it failed, a pity-party for one, and my wake-up call
  • Some of the lessons learned from my recent failures and plans to move forward

Everybody says you need to niche down; lean into your expertise or craft. And that's great advice. But the question many people come to me with is, “How do I price a specific niche?” I hear from people all the time who are struggling to come up with how to price products or services for their niche or different niches.

Here is the biggest issue I see when it comes to niching down and pricing your products or services: If you're serving a specific market that doesn't see the value in what you're doing or exceeds the value of the amount that they're willing to pay, you're never going to be able to get that high rate you want, need, or deserve.

In this week’s episode, I am going to share my thoughts and strategies for pricing niches, including how to do it successfully and some things to consider.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Positioning your product/service at a much higher value, aka the Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks example
  • Make sure the niche or clientele you service fits with your pricing
  • Creating new products or services that your niche/ideal market can afford
  • Being realistic in your efforts to serve a specific niche
  • Diversifying your niche portfolio

We all have this perception that a business has to always scale. And that it always must grow, grow, and GROW in order to be successful. I like to counter that thought and say, you can be highly efficient, you can have the business of your dreams and still be small.

In fact, build a business around what fits your lifestyle instead of fitting your lifestyle around your business.

In today’s episode, I will share why I think it's not always a good thing to scale or grow. Plus, I’ll share why I think it’s important to build a business that caters to you and your lifestyle (and not the other way around).

Obviously, if you have a desire to be a multimillion dollar company with shareholders, meetings, employees, and overhead, that's great if that fits you. When it comes to business, I decided to go a different route. I decided to keep my business small and have done so for the last 10 years. Yes, I’ve experienced success even by staying, “small.” So today, I am excited to share some of my thoughts on this subject with you.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • How one entrepreneur built a seven-figure business and still kept things “small”
  • Working with and hiring the wrong type of team member versus the right type of team member
  • Why the popularity of freelancing is growing
  • How in today’s knowledge-based economy you can build a business around your wants, needs, and schedule
  • Scaling your business could mean trade-offs in other areas of your work and life
  • Why I think there’s nothing wrong with bootstrapping your business
  • Some sound advice about success from my friend, Mike Kim

This week I am excited to have Dan Miller on the show. Dan is the author of 48 Days to the Work You Love. He is a best-selling author, career coach, and entrepreneur. If it wasn’t for Dan and his teachings, I don’t know if I would have left my organization and started a business of my own. Dan was definitely instrumental to my journey and this episode is a tribute, of sorts, to many of the things I've implemented over the years because of him.

In this episode, we discussed his books (he’s written at least five of them!), entrepreneurship, and making your business work when you go out on your own. Our conversation was packed with amazing information about being successful when transitioning from a corporate job to that of a freelancer. We cover so much in this episode that you are sure to love it.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • About Dan’s books and philosophy on work
  • What does it look like to transition to freelancing
  • How to balance and value the freedom that comes with freelancing
  • How to diversify your work to avoid having all of your eggs in one basket
  • The importance of positioning yourself from the beginning
  • Breaking out of the employee mindset
  • Valuing yourself and your offerings

This week on the podcast I decided to take a break from pricing strategy talk (don’t worry, I will cover more pricing tips in future episodes!). But I like to mix things up and this week I have a tech tip for you. If you have been following me and my work for some time, then you know I’ve had some webinars recently. Some of the tech I used to make the webinars happen is what inspired this week’s episode, which was to combine three powerful tech tools to create what I call magic.

Maybe you plan to do some email marketing or host some webinars of your own. Of course, there are many tools to choose from to make these things happen. In this episode, I will give you a peek behind the curtain, a little bit of behind-the-scenes on how I made the tech magic happen using Carrd, which is a platform for creating one-page websites, Zoom, a meeting and webinar host, and ConvertKit, an email marketing platform.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Creating landing pages using Carrd
  • Why I switched from ClickFunnels to Carrd
  • Combining Carrd with ConvertKit = one really powerful lead magnet
  • How to use Zapier to connect different apps with each other
  • Why using Zoom natively for webinar registration is clunky

In this week’s episode of Pricing is Positioning, I am going to share ten pricing mistakes that are preventing you from getting better rates. While there may be a vast array of common mistakes being made, the ten I mention in today’s episode are ones I see often when working with my clients.

In this episode, I cover everything from charging by the hour (and why that IS a mistake), posting pricing on your website (yes, another mistake), and even why having an unhealthy view of money is getting in the way of your success. Some of the mistakes I discuss you will have heard before, but some of it may be new to you. Listen to today’s episode to hear my comprehensive top ten list of pricing mistakes that are holding you back.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Why charging by the hour is not okay
  • Anchoring and why anchoring too high could be an issue
  • Using bloated and long multi-page proposals
  • Viewing the exchange of money as a personal relationship rather than a business exchange

We talk about all of that and more in this episode of Pricing is Positioning.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • How Shannon transitioned from her full-time job to self-employed
  • The importance of goals and her goal of reaching $10,000/month in revenue prior to switching to self-employment

Whether you're starting out or are a seasoned freelance consultant, being a business owner means you go through seasons of extreme busyness to those of extreme workload lows. During those peaks and lows, you want to employ what I call “Yes/No Pricing”. In today’s episode, I'll explain how I use this type of pricing to help increase my value and my rates over time. Plus, I’ll share some tactics that you can employ for optimal business success. “Yes/No Pricing,” can help you climb up the stairway of value and leverage your brand in the process.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • “Yes Pricing” What it is, when to use it, and how to use it
  • Why “Yes Pricing” or penetration mode is not the best place to be in far as positioning for your brand
  • When to employ a “No Pricing” strategy
  • How to “Price them to no" can leverage up your brand
  • Why it’s always better to move up the value ladder rather than stay stagnant, even when you are super busy and need to turn clients away, plus how to turn clients away using the “Pricing them to no” strategy

There’s no roundabout way of saying it, so I’ll just say it outright, you don't charge enough.

I've worked with many entrepreneurs, business owners, coaches, consultants, and freelancers. The one area they all have in common, as well as an area they struggle with, is the pricing of their products. Or more to the point, inaccurate or low pricing of their products. I do want to be clear, undercharging is not something to be ashamed of, it’s just a common theme amongst new (and maybe even veteran) business owners. What is important to understand is you have such great value. You offer so much, you really ought to be charging a premium for your products or services.

Of course, the catch-22 is you don't want to charge too much either. I know how it feels to send out that proposal or that email and wonder, “Did I leave money on the table?”

In today’s episode, I will be sharing some mindset shifts and strategies that will help you realize your true value and charge what you are worth. It all starts with you. The first sale is to yourself. As Alan Weiss says, “If you don't value yourself, your products, or your services, then neither will the micro marketplace.”

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Mindset shifts, including shifting your own perspective on yourself, why it’s important to understand your worth and value your own products and services
  • Penetration pricing and why you may want to utilize this strategy, temporarily
  • Some other pricing strategies and examples, including skim pricing and neutral pricing
  • Providing a world class guarantee - what that means and how to do so

This week I am excited to have Terry Weaver on the show. Terry is the author of the book, “Making Elephants Fly.” He is a speaker, coach, and entrepreneur. He is also the host of the event, The Thing Live, taking place this May in Orlando, Florida, which I'll be speaking at. Terry is an all-around great guy.

In this episode, we talked about his book, entrepreneurship, and how to price an event. Plus, we discussed how to take advantage of the knowledge economy and getting your dreams off the ground. Finally, we had an interesting conversation about outsourcing and delegating tasks, which can be a difficult thing for entrepreneurs to do. Our conversation took many twists and turns with insights from a truly knowledgeable entrepreneur. Without any further ado, here is my conversation with Terry Weaver.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • How Terry helps people who have big ideas
  • Determining if you have something that provides value to the marketplace
  • Entrepreneurship and struggling to “just make enough”
  • How Terry came up with the pricing structure for his live event
  • About his book, “Making Elephants Fly”
  • Adopting a mindset for outsourcing and delegating tasks
  • Knowledge economy and the Internet-based entrepreneur

This week I wanted to discuss the four phases of client complacency. Yes, ouch. As painful as it sounds, we have to recognize that sometimes we do become complacent with our clients. A few weeks ago I talked about the opposite end of this, the stench of desperation. The stench of desperation is when you are acting desperate or needy for a client. Well, client complacency would be on the opposite end of that. You’ve now gotten the client, but are taking them for granted or simply not treating them well.

I believe in order to avoid complacency, we need to recognize when it is happening (or about to) so that we can move towards proactivity. Even if client complacency isn't happening within your organization, recognizing it is equally important because it can serve as an opportunity to gain new clients from your competitors. For example, if there's a firm that isn’t providing value to client or taking them for granted, it’s a perfect opportunity for you to say, “Hey, I can help you with the same service and also be sure you are taken care of, being respected, and provide you with the value you deserve.”

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • The honeymoon phase of your client relationship and the role enthusiasm plays
  • Comfortable phase and doing the bare minimum
  • The complacent phase, aka “toxic” phase
  • What happens if you get to the dreaded phase four

Email marketing is king. If you haven’t implemented an email marketing strategy into your consulting business yet, this week’s episode will showcase just how effective it can be. In fact, you can be effective with as little as fifty or one hundred people on your email list. Remember, it is not the quantity of people you know, but instead the quality of people that are actually going to engage with your services.

Yes, this topic is a slight departure from the usual topics I cover in the podcast. But marketing is all about how you showcase and talk about your offerings and position yourself in the marketplace. Email marketing, in an online world, is an important facet of your business.

Know this, I'm by no means an email marketing guru. However, I have learned a few tricks, tips, and even some cool stuff from friends who are, like Mike Kim (an expert in email and internet marketing). In fact, Mike shared with me some key strategies I've implemented into my own email marketing and have found success. This week, I want to share my email marketing insights, advice, and observations with you, so that you can find success too.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • How email marketing differs from online ads: it’s all about relationship building
  • The importance of providing value to your email subscribers
  • ConvertKit versus MailChimp - which is the best email marketing platform to use?
  • Targeting specific groups within your email lists, how and why you should do so
  • An intriguing way to engage with your LinkedIn contacts

Here is a question I get asked often: “Should I publish pricing on my website?”

When discussing both product types, productized and customized services, the answer really depends on where you are in your consulting business and whether you're established or just starting out. In this episode I delve into this topic, offer insights, and examples as to when it’s best to list your prices versus when to leave them off of your site.

If you have thoughts around this week’s topic, I'd love to hear from you. Use the links below to connect with me and tell me what has worked for you and your business.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics: * Why new consultants, freelancers, or brand experts should NOT list their pricing on their website * Some reasons established consultants may want to INCLUDE their pricing on their website * The risks vs. the rewards of not including your pricing on your website * When it makes sense to include pricing regardless of years in business * Products vs. customized services and pricing

When you're first starting out, or even if you're a seasoned professional, you can fall into the “stench of desperation” trap. What do I mean by that? Well, have you ever had this happen? You send out a proposal. Then after five minutes, you begin to wonder why you haven’t received a response from the prospect. And then the obsessive thoughts start to kick in. “Has the prospect received the proposal or did it get lost in cyberspace?” You then continuously hit refresh on your email inbox. And, you’ve even begun to draft a follow up email. Next comes, “Was my quote too high?” You begin to beat yourself up and start planning how to broach the subject of discounting your fees if you do get pushback on your original proposal quote. Finally, you get to the part where you throw up your hands in exasperation and decide, “That’s it. They just don’t like me.” It’s now been 10 minutes since you’ve sent the proposal and you’ve already thrown in the towel. That, my friends, is what I mean by the stench of desperation. In this episode, I am going to go into many of the facets that lead to these obsessive thoughts, which hold you back from being successful in your business. Plus, I’ll provide some insight and advice on how to avoid these mental roadblocks, for good. In this episode, I’ll cover these topics: * Some more examples of the stench of desperation trap * Derailing the negotiation or onboarding process * What Fonzie from Happy Days teaches us about being calm, cool, and collected * Embracing the power of, “No” * What you should and should not do when you send out a proposal

If you're a consultant, have a personal brand, or are a freelancer, one of the questions you might be asking is, “How do I create my first product?” In this week’s episode, I am going to share how to create and launch your first knowledge product.

First, the product you create is going to be wrapped around your area of expertise or knowledge that you want to monetize, which is why I like to call it a knowledge product. Before we dive into creating your first product, you need to know what a knowledge product is and what actually makes a good product. I break down the different types of knowledge products you can have and then provide the steps needed to launch your product, successfully.

If you're looking at taking advantage of today’s digital and knowledge-based economy, this episode is the one you won’t want to miss.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • The various kinds of knowledge products, including e-books, online courses, paid webinars, paid masterminds, group coaching, and more
  • One way to stand out in your industry by producing “old school” (aka hardcopy) content
  • Multiple resources for creating your knowledge product
  • Various platforms and tools for selling your knowledge product, including payment processor recommendations

We all can agree that we want more revenue or income in our business, right? We also can agree that oftentimes in business we find ourselves taking the feast or famine approach. What if I told you that you could work a model that would not only allow you to increase your revenue streams, but essentially eliminate the feast or famine approach from your business, altogether? It’s true. In today’s episode, I am going to share with you how to implement 3 pillars of revenue in your consulting business for maximum success.

How do I know the 3 pillars of revenue work? Well, I left my job, security, and career after 18 years in practice. One of the things I had to do was figure out how to pay the bills quickly. Not only did I do consulting work during that time, but I also incorporated two of the three pillars into my business model. What I say is not absolute, but I like to share what worked for me and this approach did work. I think 3 pillars of revenue might help you move your consultancy and business forward to greater heights too.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • The importance of clearly defining your services and who you are providing services to
  • Productized offerings, including courses, online content, and resources
  • Why you should have a mixture of training and education created around your niche
  • Consultant’s marketing growth cycle

This week I am excited to bring you my first podcast interview with guest Blair Enns, Founder, of Win Without Pitching and author of Pricing Creativity: A Guide To Profit Beyond The Billable Hour. If Blair’s name sounds familiar to you, it may be because I’ve talked about him in some of my past episodes. I'm just so honored that he was able to be my first guest because he is an inspiration to me and the work I do. In fact, his book, Pricing Creativity, was the inspiration for the name of this podcast! In this week’s episode, I want to share with you five pricing arrangements for your consultancy business and why I don't think you should be charging by the hour. Some of the pricing options I share in this episode may be new to you. And, that’s okay. I’ve shared this information with professionals in workshops and events, and they too were unaware of the different pricing arrangements that could be used in their business. Knowledge is power. And after you listen to this episode, you’ll know these five pricing arrangements; which may help you quickly adapt almost any pricing conversation. Instead of a proposal or engagement going south, you may be able to move into a direction that will land you the job or maybe even help you secure a higher rate for your services!

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Hourly pricing: why I can’t stand it and how it puts you and your clients at odds
  • Refocusing the conversation from time to value and providing different levels of value in pricing options
  • Daily rates: when and how to use them
  • Two types of retainers: retainer for deliverables and retainer for access
  • Project pricing and why I encourage you to consider it as a viable pricing option
  • Value-based pricing: why it’s a great concept and how to use it

When talking with potential clients about pricing for their brand or business, many ask me, “So, Paul, you talk about value ladders a lot. What is a value ladder, exactly?” Well, in this week’s episode I am going to answer that question and by the end, you’ll know what a value ladder is and how to use one in your business. Plus, I will share with you priming, how to prime for higher rates, and anchoring, which ties everything all together for grading the value ladder.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Creating a value ladder of products and prices so prospects engage with you, onboard, and ramp up from there
  • How creating a value ladder allows you to take a holistic look at your pricing
  • Some real-world uses for value and product ladders
  • Being upfront about pricing helps weed out those that can’t afford you (and why that’s okay)
  • Placement of products on the value ladder
  • Priming for the purpose of producing higher rates and how anchoring ties into it all

In this episode, I am going to talk about not wasting time with long proposals and how to use the one page proposal in your business (which I’ve mentioned in past episodes). Oftentimes, firms or companies can end up putting together long proposals (upwards of 100 pages!). Most of these proposals are solution-oriented and resume-based. And, yes, I was guilty of putting together long proposals over the years too. But, once I turned to my own business and consultations and read an eye-opening book, I learned the importance of limiting unpaid proposals. Today, I will share with you what I learned and hope to help you craft a one page proposal that not only saves you time and energy, but can help you increase your rates too.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Instead of putting solutions or scenarios into a long proposal, I explain what you can do
  • Who should use one page proposals
  • Things to consider before crafting your proposal
  • Creating your pricing options
  • Many of the elements to include in your one page proposal
  • A few examples of using a one page proposal in my own business and the results

By the way, in the first episode of Pricing is Positioning, I shared 7 tips for creating a pricing strategy. If you haven’t listened to it yet, I urge you to do so. I also touched on pricing options and anchoring in that episode. You can find it here.

In this episode, I’ll cover these topics:

  • Five different pricing arrangements you can use in your business
  • Why you’re missing out on huge opportunities if you are not using pricing options or anchoring
  • The power of controlling comparisons and behavioral economics
  • Why providing options provides context in the value decision and the best number of options to have
  • Value ladders and anchoring, how they make pricing options seem more reasonable
