This week, I got to talk with Kaitlin B. Curtice about her new children’s book Spring’s Miracles. It’s such a beautiful story about a Potawatomi girl named Dani, who’s learning to be brave while exploring the wonders of spring. Kaitlin shares the meaning behind the story, the importance of honoring Indigenous traditions, and how this season of new life can help us see the world—and ourselves—a little differently. I loved this conversation and can’t wait for you to hear it!

How many of you have a half-finished creative project just sitting there, waiting for you to come back to it? Maybe it’s a book, a painting, a business idea, or even something as simple as a scrapbook you swore you’d finish two years ago. (No judgment—I have plenty of these, too.)

Starting a project? That’s the fun part. The ideas, the excitement, the this is going to be amazing energy. But finishing? That’s where things get tricky.

So today, we’re going to talk about how to actually finish what you start—even when motivation fades, life gets busy, or perfectionism sneaks in.

Sound good? Let’s do this!

This week I sent out the monthly newsletter, and I felt the urge to include some scripture. So if you aren’t subscribed, it was a list of 6 Bible verses to give you a bit of encouragement and purpose on your creative journey. I’ve been following the Bible reading plan daily this year after finding one I loved that a friend recommended to me. It’s called The Bible Recap with Tara-Leigh Cobb. I also believe it’s a podcast, too. It’s been really awesome diving into the scriptures as I’m studying it and reading it all chronologically this year. God is, literally, the ultimate Creator. and He made us in His image. That means He designed us to be creative too, right?! Think about it that way. So today, I want to share some verses that will remind you of your purpose, your strength, and the encouragement we have in Christ as we create. Grab a pen and paper and let’s get started.

The Art of Motherhood NewsletterA fun, creative newsletter for moms who love books, art, and making things. Get personal updates, creative prompts, bookish chats, and a little encouragement—plus coffee talk, of course.

We’re busting some creative myths that I know too many of us are still believing. We often hold ourselves back because of these myths. Creativity doesn’t have to be perfect, and it certainly doesn’t have to be this big, overwhelming thing. So, let’s dive in and challenge these myths, shall we?

I’m not a poet. I’ve never taken a poetry class or really studied it much at all. (That said, I do have a small poetic claim to fame: I once had a haiku about coffee published in the Heartland Society of Women Writers. So, technically, I’m a published poet!) But poetry isn’t something I consider a regular part of my creative repertoire.

Still, I’ve always been intrigued by it. There’s something so powerful about capturing a thought, a feeling, or a moment in just a few words. And as a busy mom, I love the idea of expressing creativity in a way that doesn’t take a lot of time. That’s why I decided to dedicate today’s episode to something I think you’ll find inspiring and accessible: one-liner poetry. Even if you’ve never written a poem in your life, this might just spark a creative interest you didn’t know you had.

It's been 3 years since I last had Jenny on the podcast!

Jenny Mouse is a mom of three from Ontario Canada. She had a hard time focusing on school and assignments when she was young and found learning about the brain very helpful. She wrote her first book Brian the Brain Head Space when she struggled to find high quality material about the brain for young kids. When was the last time you tried something new in your creative life? And I don’t mean just switching up your routine or tweaking something you already do. I mean trying something totally different. A medium you’ve never touched, a style that’s not “you,” or even just a bold, scary idea that you’re not sure you can pull off.

If it’s been a while—or if the thought makes you feel nervous—you are not alone. Comfort zones feel... well, comfortable! They’re our safe spaces. And honestly, there’s nothing wrong with leaning into what you’re good at and what you love. But staying there too long can leave you feeling stuck or uninspired. That’s why today, we’re diving into why stepping outside your creative bubble is so important and how you can do it without feeling overwhelmed.

After 17 years as a stay-at-home mom, Laura Rittman felt a bit lost when her daughter went off to college. Her husband reminded her of her dream to write a children’s book, and here she is, getting ready to launch Lucky Ruby! With a background in PR and event planning, she’s excited to be on this new path as an author.

In this episode, I’m chatting with the debut author of Lucky Ruby, a children’s book all about celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas. The story follows Ruby, a little girl with both traditions, and her classmate Violet, who finds it a bit strange at first—but then realizes just how lucky Ruby is. Inspired by her own life with her Christian-Jewish family, the author hopes this book will help kids learn to appreciate and respect different family traditions and see that, at the heart of it all, it’s about family and love.

Join us as we talk about her journey with Lucky Ruby, the beauty of blending traditions, and finding new purpose in this next chapter of life.

How far are you into your 50k words? Let's talk about how we can KEEP GOING!

It’s that time of year again. And no, I’m not talking about the holidays, I’m talking about something very special that happens in November. I’ve attempted it myself yearly since 2019. And that goal is writing 50k words. In 30 days. And before you freak out too much, it’s not the finished, polished novel that you’re going to have done by the end of the month, rather just ugly, beautiful first draft. Novellas can range between 17-40k words, a lot of cozy mysteries I read are also in the 50k range, and if you’re writing a historical fiction or fantasy especially, you can be upwards of 150k words. But to set some sort of parameters for this, 50k is the goal.

More proof that you can be a mom and do ALL the things!

"Genevieve LeDoux is an Emmy-winning producer and a true visionary in the world of content creation. She’s worked with big names like Mattel, Hasbro, WildBrain, Amazon, and Disney, and her creative touch has brought to life some of the most beloved kids’ shows like Tumbleleaf, Baby Einstein, Yo Gabba Gabba, and Barbie. Her background in performing and managing bands, along with watching how her own kids discovered music, led her to notice a gap between preschool music and what’s available for adults. That inspired her to make music a core part of the amazing content she creates.

Genevieve has a special gift for blending whimsy with meaningful stories that connect with people of all ages. She’s the creative mind behind Star Forest, an exciting world where music and imagination come together, and this project is all about her belief in the power of dreams and the magic of imagination.

Outside of her work, Genevieve loves spending time with her family, collaborating on projects with her husband Chris, a talented VFX artist, and finding inspiration in her kids. From playing in the backyard creek to family road trips, she believes in staying connected to her inner child, and it shows in everything she does.

She’s also a huge advocate for Georgia’s creative economy and is deeply involved in building up local talent. Her production company, Silver Comet Productions, works with some of Georgia’s best artists and thinkers. Genevieve also serves on the Board of Film Impact Georgia and is a member of WIFT, the Television Academy, and the Creators’ Society.

Her passion for storytelling and creativity drives everything she does, and her goal is to create experiences that entertain, inspire, and uplift audiences everywhere."

A new Star Forest album, Let Me Be Real will be released on September 26, 2024.

You know what I’m talking about—the projects that got set aside when the demands of motherhood took over, and now they’re just waiting, maybe even gathering a little dust, for us to find the time to get back to them.

I’m calling this episode “Reviving Old Projects: How to Rekindle Your Passion for Past Ideas.” Because let’s face it, as moms, our creative energy often gets put on the back burner. But today, we’re going to talk about how to reignite that spark and turn those unfinished projects into something that brings you joy and fulfillment.

So grab your coffee—or let’s be real, that cold cup that’s been sitting out all morning—and let’s chat about how to breathe new life into those creative endeavors.

Becoming a published children’s book author is truly her childhood dream come true. Before pursuing authorship, she worked in the world of real estate for several years, helping people find and build their new dream homes. She is an alumni of Missouri State University in Springfield, MO, where she studied Secondary English Education.

Madison currently lives in the vibrant beach town of Venice, Florida (the shark tooth capital of the world) with her husband and two adorable kiddos.

Her debut picture book, Tiki Tim, was largely inspired by her experience as the "new kid" -- something she understands all too well, as she moved with her family 10 times across multiple states by the time she graduated high school. At the start of the new millenium, she spent some pretty formative years on the island of Oahu in Hawaii -- an experience that also majorly influenced the creation of Tiki Tim and his home of Adventure Bay.

Aside from writing fun, engaging children’s stories, she enjoys playing in the sunshine with her spirited girl and joyful boy, reading a suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat novel beachside or poolside, and flexing her creative passions in various forms (crafting, jewelry-making, sketching, you name it).

She is a gift-giver, a loyal friend, an ocean lover and a bit of a clean freak. She LOVES to read and believes one is never too old to enjoy the magic of a picture book.

AND book giveaway! Head to @momswhocreatepodcast on Instagram to enter to win Author Your Ambition by M.K. Williams.

Today's episode is packed with so many resources for you all. And I love it so much. M.K. Williams had one simple goal: she needed more time to write her own books. After self-publishing two novels, she found herself spending more and more time answering questions from aspiring authors than working on her next manuscript. Out of necessity, Author Your Ambition was born. Through a series of videos, books, and courses, M.K. now helps more authors than she could have imagined (and she even has some time to write her own books as well.) Since 2015 she has written and self-published her own collection of books and helped countless authors on their independent publishing journey, all while raising her daughter.

Rose has spent around five years in the creative arts and nonprofit sector as an educator. In 2021, she made a move from the U.S. to the U.K., where she started her own online business, focusing on weekly posts, online courses, and workbooks.

Rose's passion for Arts for Holistic Development has been a driving force in her career, but after becoming a mother, she redirected her creative focus towards helping mothers, artists, and non-artists nurture their inner creativity. Kathleen Davis is a retired teacher of ten years, wife, mother of three, and author. She has her Master’s in Elementary Education from the University of Florida, and she spent her career searching for and reading good children’s books to her students. She believes that books not only provide a fountain of information, but are also a way to enter a new world and completely change a perspective.

"Dean's Magical Mix Up: The Principal's Pin" is a charming middle-grade tale that humorously explores the age-old desire to grow up too quickly and the valuable lessons that come with it. Dean's journey teaches young readers that the grass isn't always greener on the other side and that understanding the challenges of adulthood is a magical lesson in itself.

“BRAVE,” her first book, was based on her children’s fears at night. They were not sleeping well and were waking her up through the night. She could not find a book that was age appropriate, did not create more fears in children, and reinforced that they were safe and loved. Six months later, her book was self-published.

“Feathers From Above,” was inspired by Kathleen’s children. They would find feathers and tell her that their Guardian Angel must have paid them a visit. She knew right away that this would be the framework for her next book.

Kathleen is hoping to encourage children to be brave, know that they are loved, and remember that God is with them through good situations and bad.

Daisy takes us on her personal journey of maternity and mental health, sharing how writing has evolved into her therapeutic outlet. She sheds light on the importance of maternal mental health - a topic often overlooked yet so crucial, affecting not only mothers but also their children and loved ones. Daisy's mission is to elevate the conversation around maternal mental health, a leading cause of maternal mortality in the UK.

On the subject of body positivity, Daisy shares the inspiration behind her children's book, "What About My Tommy Mummy?" A result of her struggle to find body-positive literature for her children, Daisy's book fills this void, teaching young minds to love and appreciate their bodies.

This episode is a clarion call to all who wish to better understand motherhood's realities, the importance of mental health, and the power of the written word. Let's listen, learn, and let Daisy's journey inspire us all.

| Daisie Lane is a writer and toddler mama, 31 years-old, from Wolverhampton. She is the founder of Posh Dog Press, an independent publisher dedicated to amplifying the voices of mothers. She's also the creator of the Lockdown Mama Community, for mums whose pregnancy, birth and/or postpartum was impacted by the pandemic. Daisie writes honest poetry about motherhood and maternal mental health, and was the recipient of Arts Council England funding to encourage mothers to write through their trauma. Mikayla was born and raised in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. She currently resides in California with her husband and two boys, which they are raising to be bilingual. By day she is in charge of all the nerdy parts of making wine. At night, she writes children's books about science-y things and family. She has been writing since she was first able to hold a pencil, and celebrated the release of her first book in 2022. Instead of picking one thing to be when she grew up, Mikayla has found a way to merge all of her childhood career dreams (and there were many!) in her children's books.

Known for her boisterous laugh, flowery tattoos, and memorable homemade soups. Nadia resides in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Raising three young kids alongside a big dog who loves the essence of mud. Her Chilean husband and her share a love of sneakers and have the same shoe size; they are true sole mates. Nadia has found writing to be fascinating since she was 11 years old when she first immigrated to Canada.

While learning a new language and adapting to a new culture, she endured a traumatic family life of domestic violence and child neglect. From 17 years old she lived on her own and supported herself through college. It wasn't until later in adult life that she realized her creativity and the importance of expression for her soul. Nadejda has worked with photography, painting, illustration, and poetry writing. After having her own children, she decided to take photography, writing, and art courses through local Universities and Colleges.

Nadia Aldea’s self-expression flows out through different mediums. Main crafts of writing and figurative abstract digital art. Working with a variety of mediums is her ideal artistic process. Each creative idea manifesting into its own individual purpose. Nadia’s most favourite part of creating is invoking a thought and igniting a new perspective.

LEMIMIcreatives is where Nadia creates vibrant figurative abstract digital art. With creation she aims to express, understand, and appreciate what is around her and within her. The pieces are a movement of bodies and the relationships among them with the vibrancy of life and the chaos of it all.

Authentic Me is one of her three books she is currently working on. It is a heartwarming children's picture book. The story is of two young cousins talking about alopecia and why being different is fun. The story embodies a valuable message of acceptance but it also recognizes that loving your own differences is the very thing that makes you authentic. Currently querying publishing agents.

Nadia has self-published Dear Baby Stories a collection of stories from women at all stages of their pregnancies, all told along their photographs.

Additionally, her newest project is an intriguing fictional novel about a complex journey an emotion takes to discover itself.

Ashton Rodenhiser is passionate about lifting the creative spirit in everyone that she meets. She has followed her passion for helping people communicate their ideas and combined that with creativity by founding Mind's Eye Creative Consulting.

You’ll often find her with markers in hand as she’s helping bring ideas to life through graphic recording and graphic facilitation practices.

She’s worked with diverse groups, from non-profits to Fortune 500 companies. It may appear as if she’s the silent illustrator in the room. In fact, she’s helping to break down complex concepts and notions into an easily understandable visual language, helping others retain more information while inspiring people to continue practicing her techniques in the world.

Over the years, she has brought over 2000 presentations and conversations to life either on paper or digitally.

Imagine going through the journey of becoming a mother, while grappling with the loss of your own. Our guest, Kera, a high school Spanish teacher, takes us through the heart-wrenching experiences of her life, where joy and grief intertwine in unthinkable ways. Kera shares her deeply moving story of losing her mother just as she was becoming a mom herself, detailing the unique challenges that she faced amidst a global pandemic. The pain of losing her mother and the joy of welcoming a daughter into the world occur almost simultaneously, painting a poignant picture of life's unpredictability and the necessity to cherish every moment with our loved ones.

As we traverse through Kera's emotional journey, we learn about the therapeutic tool that offered her solace - journaling. She illuminates how penning down her feelings and experiences in a journal for her daughters not only provided comfort, but also helped her be honest about the struggles of motherhood. This conversation reminds us of the cathartic potential of expression and the importance of reaching out for help when needed. Kera's narrative also underlines the significance of self-care and mental health. Her story, filled with both tears and smiles, is a testament to resilience and the power of sharing personal stories to provide support and understanding to others in similar situations.

Kera is a High School teacher, the author of Legacy Letters-guided journal, and a content creator in the grief space. After the unexpected loss of her Mother, just days after her youngest was born, she was determined to create something that allows us to leave behind handwritten words of love, advice, and support. The guided journal does just that, and breaks down complex issues into small bite-size pieces, allowing us to leave behind a detailed and loving legacy to those we know and love.

Chanel grew up in Detroit and adopted a love for writing at an early age. As young as 8 years old she participated in various writing and oratorical contests to hone her skills. As Chanel advanced through school she continued to participate in writing contests, published poems and participated in creative writing programs.

Chanel graduated from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with a double major in Psychology and Criminal Justice and a minor in Communications. She had the dream of pursuing a law career but life took a different turn. Instead, she worked in the social services field, working with underprivileged youth in group homes and independent living programs. Chanel eventually came to the realization that she wanted to reach children much earlier in life. The goal being, to help alleviate some of the issues and problems that plagued the children within, her then, current position. It was at this time Chanel started working at the Georgia Institute of Technology – Child Study Lab, as a research Assistant.

In her position at Georgia Tech, Chanel assisted with research to help in the early detection of Autism and other developmental delays. While working as a research assistant, she was co-author on scholarly articles that were published in journals such as: The Journal of Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology, Nature Communications and the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

At Georgia Tech Chanel also became a co-instructor for the Universities freshman seminar course, for incoming first year students. During this time, she started to pursue her Masters in Public Policy at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, at Georgia State.

Shortly after starting schooling for her Masters Degree, Chanel got married to her husband, Justin Miller. After getting married and having children, her career goals shifted. She put her masters degree on hold and left academia to become a stay at home mom. Once her children grew, she started the blog, Them 3 and Me, where she wrote about life as a stay at home mom who also homeschools. The blog led Chanel to start self publishing her own literary works, the first being, Kid De Cuisine: Hadasah’s Breakfast Delights. Some of her other works include: 10 rockets Blast into Space and From Sand to Sea and Back Again.

We dive into the magical world of Nicole's Christian Fantasy trilogy, geared towards readers aged 16 and up, and explore the fascinating characters who navigate a realm filled with magic, faith, and adventure. We also discuss her delightful children's book, The Flower Girl, and her plans for future children's books. Nicole shares her experiences in the publishing industry and how she's connecting with other creative moms, inspiring them to bring their own creations to life. Don't miss this enchanting episode if you're a fan of Christian Fantasy or in search of a heartwarming children's book!

Nicole Patrice Thomas is a woman who believes that the fastest way to see the world and experience adventures without limits is to open a book. Reading has always been her favorite thing to do, and she would rather be immersed in books day and night. Holding a BA degree in Advertising and Public Relations as a CUNY graduate, her love has always been rooted in the literary world.

In 2019, Nicole reached a point in her life where she felt stagnant, craving direction and a fresh start. Being a Christian, she takes her guidance from her heavenly father. One January morning, at 3 am, she was awakened by the desperate voice of a woman running for her life and the life of her unborn child, echoing in her head. Nicole wrote down those words and kept writing, setting the foundation for her first book in a fantasy trilogy. Within a year, she completed the trilogy along with a children's book, a corresponding coloring book, and a Spanish translation.

While Nicole is a hospitality professional by trade, her heart beats as a poet. Her ultimate goal is to spread light and love to her readers, offering them relatable characters who find redemption and hope despite betrayals. She strives to create a reflection of her readers within the pages, empowering them to believe that regardless of their starting point in life, the ending can always change.

We talk about self-publishing frequently on here, right? Today I’m talking with M.K. Williams, who has authored 13 books - and she will give you an even deeper dive into indie publishing. M.K. had one simple goal: she needed more time to write her own books. After self-publishing two novels, she found herself spending more and more time answering questions from aspiring authors than working on her next manuscript. Out of necessity, Author Your Ambition was born. Through a series of videos, books, and courses, M.K. now helps more authors than she could have imagined (and she even has some time to write her own books as well.) Since 2015 she has written and self-published her own collection of books and helped dozens of authors on their independent publishing journey, all while raising her daughter.

She’s a fountain of info, you guys. Connect with her below and tap the links to purchase Author Your Ambition & watch her Youtube videos:

By following these steps and seeking out resources and support, you can bring your children's book to life and share it with the world. Please know I’m 100% rooting you on. Monique Maldonado is the CEO at Maldina Publishing, LLC and the author of The Looking List. She's also been the Marketing Director at Latin Rhythms Academy of Dance & Performance for seven years. Her passion for writing and journaling at a young age led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism at Columbia College Chicago. She then decided to continue her studies in the Arts and attended DePaul University and earned her Master's in New Media Studies.

The writing of a children's book developed from the idea of sharing some of her life's obsessions (planning & organization) and teaching valuable life skills to children. If there is one thing she has learned since becoming a mother herself, teaching children the way of the world is hard. Her mission is to create fun and colorful stories that parents can utilize as a fun parenting hack.

Monique is the wife of a rock star artist and the mother of two children. But she has also been a blogger, law school academic counselor, professional competitive Latin dancer & instructor, and a beauty pageant winner. When Monique isn't marketing or writing, you can find her crafting, at book club, running board meetings, watching movies, or planning her next party theme.

Charissa Bates is my guest today, and you’re in for such a beautifully inspiring story. With a little Harry Potter thrown in.

Charissa is a mother to three and is a survivor of a rare and aggressive cancer. She works as a Children's Mental Health Therapist and enjoys serving and volunteering. Charissa loves her Little Free Library that looks like Hogwarts. As a long time Harry Potter fan myself, this is one of the coolest little free libraries I’ve ever seen. Charissa enjoys creating and bringing her children on adventures, camping, and traveling. During cancer Charissa discovered how therapeutic writing was for her. Thus, three books were born: We Find Joy: Cancer Messed with the Wrong Family, The Traveling Book and I'm a good neighbor like Jesus. She lives by the words "Find Joy". Again, her most important role is being able to watch her three beautiful children grow up. Enjoy Charissa’s story.

Happy New Year!

Link to free printable to track your reading:
https://www.momswhocreate.com/p/readingchallenge/

I had a reading goal of 24 books for 2022. You guys, I only read 13 books this year. I started off so strong, then faded. Of course I could ramble off a million excuses for not reading as much as I wanted, from having tiny people to take care of to using my nighttime alone time to work on the podcast and other various things. But I really let it fizzle out. The TBR pile on my nightstand is about to fall over. And honestly, I've heard the same thing from so many moms with little kids as well. So I thought this year, I’d love to have a little accountability for reading from people who are in the same situation as I am. So that’s why, drum roll please, I am introducing the 2023 Moms Who Create Reading Challenge. It sounds fancy, but it's just a challenge to us all to read 24 books this year. So like 2 a month average. I do much better at things with accountability partners. Reading is too important to put on the back burner. Okay tell me if anyone else feels this way sometimes when you read. You feel like you should be doing the 85 other things on your list instead of jumping into a fantasy world. We've got the prioritizing all wrong. So let's encourage each other to complete a goal of finishing our TBR piles and getting our nightstands back, or honestly, filling up our nightstands with a pile of new books to read too. Haha.

I've made a free, downloadable printout for you all. It has 24 blank lines with checkboxes. You can do it however works best for you, but when you start a book, write the title down and then simply check it off when you're done. To make it even more of a community, post online to your social media each time you finish the book and add the hashtag #mwcreadingchallenge
It's available at the link above or on my Instagram and Facebook. You can post your checklist update each time you finish. By doing this, we can see what other moms are reading and get encouraged by their list to continue making time for ourselves to get lost in a story. I'm really excited to start this journey with you all! Let's challenge ourselves and treat ourselves to some new books this year. And nothing gets my creative juices flowing like a good story. I'd LOVE if you would screenshot this episode or checklist and post it online so I can see who's in!

So please PLEASE join me this year in reading 24 books. Again, go to https://www.momswhocreate.com/p/readingchallenge/ to save and print your accountability checklist. It's available..now. :)

Lynn Rhys lived in Illinois for most of her life until she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2004. Lynn finished her Masters Degree and decided that she wanted to try for a new adventure, so she decided to take a stab at writing romance books.
When she isn’t writing, you can find her spending quality time with the family. If the kids are occupied (or finally asleep for the night), she loves to read a good book and get lost in it. She also enjoys the daily struggle of trying to get her kids to try to eat different foods other than chicken nuggets and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

  1. You tried. This isn’t like participation trophy word vomit. I mean like, even if it was for a week, you started writing a book. That’s honestly more than a lot of people can say. Deciding to conquer NaNo took planning. Even if you’re a panster, you’re a mom. So you did some sort of planning, right? Taking that first step, albeit not having your sought after goal, is huge.
  2. You have a base to go off of now. Again, even if you wrote 25k words or even 15k words, you have a start and now you can develop it even more. Just because November is over, do not stop working on your novel. I beg you not to say “well I didn’t finish my book so I better never look at it ever again.” Most authors take much longer than 30 days to write a book. Guys listen, J.K. Rowling worked on her first novel for six years. Okay let me say this again. J.K. Rowling worked on her first novel for six years. I digress.
  3. You learned some things about yourself as a writer. What you like to write, how you best write, like the environment and time of day, what works and doesn’t work for you. If you didn’t win, let’s evaluate that. Get out a notepad and write down what it was that stopped you. Was it writer’s block, a busy holiday season, your kids flushing your laptop down the toilet? Or just you saying “man I can’t do this. What am I even trying to do, I’m not an author.” and never looking back at your word document. Did you run out of time? Or I know, was it tiktok? Without judgment of yourself, be honest and write down what stopped you. How can you work on that for future endeavors?
  4. You have a community now to lean on. From the writing community on instagram to the community on the NaNoWriMo website forums, you have made an alliance with others and now you can grow, flourishing over the next however many years in your writing journey. This is huge. You’re not alone.
  5. I’m right here with you. Don’t think just because I’m your number one fan that I’m over here pumping out bestselling novels every November. This was my first time really trying and I didn’t win. But instead of kicking myself in the emotions, I’m excited for what I started and I know that it’s only up from here. So will you also believe in yourself alongside me? We totally have this. Failing isn’t failing if you learned something along the way. Failing is failing, to me, when you stop pursuing what you’re going after.

**Hi everyone, and welcome to this SPECIAL ONE YEAR anniversary episode of the Moms Who Create Podcast. So much has happened in the past year. The podcast has reached 6 continents, 34 countries, and has had thousands of downloads. This blows my mind. When I started, I thought, okay, if I even reach, help and encourage one mom somewhere in the world, that will be 100% worth it. So to think of how many moms I’ve potentially and hopefully encouraged gives me goosebumps. I love you all. Thank you for listening and sharing. Thank you for being a part of my life.

I wanted this episode to be special, and what could be more special than to revisit the past year. I’ve stitched together some clips from each interview so you have an overdose of encouragement in this single episode. Just editing this, I was literally crying. I told my husband this is the best thing in the entire world and I can’t believe I get the opportunity to talk to you guys. All of you listening, even if I haven’t spoken to you yet, you have a story to share. And I’m proud of every single one of you.**

Please enjoy, and from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening and supporting the podcast.

"Being an author was always a dream of mine, one that seemed far reaching and unattainable, and then one day I decided to shoot for the stars and I'm glad I did. I have discovered things about myself during this process and absolutely love what I do. I get to share my stories and pieces of myself with people across the world, and I couldn't be happier. When I'm not writing, you can find me singing, dancing, or yelling at one of my favorite sports teams on the TV. That is, when I'm not cooking, chasing after my toddler, or toting my two girls off to sports or theater rehearsals."

TW: Bethany’s book deals with childhood trauma. We don't go into immense detail, but we do discuss how children are affected by certain traumas and how her book helps them process everything and be comforted in all of their situations. Today, I want to talk to you about indie authors. The beautiful creatures that are independent, self-published authors. I am an indie author, some of my best internet friends are indie authors and I’m sure a lot of you listening are indie authors, or at least have a friend that is. There are so many men and women (I see you, moms) out there doing the work to get their books into the hands of people all over the world. It’s a lot of work. I literally have only one fully self-written and illustrated book available right now and it took me a really, long time to do that. Admittedly, I should market it more. You know how I feel, though? Like I’m bothering people when I tell them about my book. I’m so proud and so excited of what I created, but when I make a post about it, the little imposter-syndrome girl on my shoulder is like KELLI NO ONE CARES. I know know know some other authors feel that way too. I’ve talked to so many that feel bad over posting about and marketing their books because self-promotion feels like a bother. I believe the trick to helping the bashful Kellis of the world is showing more support to the indies. Going beyond just a “like” on an Instagram post.

I’m going to hit on 7 ways to support an indie author in your life, or a random one on Instagram.

Befriend them all, y’all.

These little ways will add a boost of confidence and reassurance to someone that they’re exactly where they need to be, doing exactly what they’re called to be doing in their life, guilt free.

Here's a mental health check.

It's been an emotional week or two for me. My 5 year-old best friend (daughter) started kindergarten and my beloved best friend cat of 14 years went to heaven. Sometimes in all the ups and downs of life, we need to take time just to be. Listening to ASMR or rain sounds tends to relax me and de-stress everything from my mind to my shoulders. I also love listening to calming sounds as I work and create. I needed this peace this week. Hopefully, it serves you too. <3

I recorded this storm from my back patio recently. :)

I'll be back next week with a brand new interview.

Setting an intentional morning routine really comes down to you waking up early for a reason. A purpose. Don’t just wake up to say you wake up at 5am because it’s what a book (or podcast) told you to do. Have that passion burning in you to not his snooze at 5am, or, okay, only hit it once, and to know that your words and your art are waiting for you. What’s your reason? It can be a burning passion to just drink coffee in the quiet, listening to birds sing outside while you let your mind summon your next creative endeavor. It can be a burning passion to become a New York Times Bestselling Author.

Not everyone is a morning person, of course. But if you’re one of those that has small children and needs the early morning to get things done, instead of nighttime when your kids are running in your room every hour, this is for you. The enneagram 4 in me would love to make this groundbreaking, completely unique and mind-blowing. But, it's in the simpleness that we can really thrive. Small Changes. Routines form habits. Habits turn into a lifestyle. And boy is it hard to make a routine, right? You can make your breakfast the night before once, wake up super pumped and proud of yourself, then never do it again. So when you wake up the next day with no prepared breakfast, a rumbly in your tumbly and consequently in a bad mood, why even wake up early in the first place? When I wake up annoyed or mad, it really sets the tone for the morning. Intentional is, and always is, the name of the game.

Follow me on Instagram @momswhocreatepodcast and Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/momswhocreatepodcast

Thank you so much for listening, and I hope you find takeaways to have a productive and creative morning.

These are 5 ideas to get your mind working on a creative goal that works for you and your family. Don’t stay in the box of kids' art going on the fridge and only coming from their crinkled backpack after school. Make art on purpose. Let your kids know that art is more than 30 minutes at school twice a week. Read books on artists that your children might take interest in. Again, the library is the best resource for really everything in life. I checked out some books on famous women artists that my daughter thought were SUPER neat. My nephew loves drawing characters and making comic strips. There are books for that too. Educate them on what is out there, the possibilities in art are limitless. Being a Disney animator is a job that they could have one day.

Let me know if you try any of these ideas, and I’d love to see artwork that you create.

**Art is fun. Life is fun. You do you and definitely have your alone time making your amazing art. But maybe let’s give our children their specific time, too.

Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”**

🇺🇦🎙Today's episode is very important and very special. You know on this podcast, I interview moms who can do it all. Raising their kids and also thriving in their creative outlet. It's hard no matter what stage of life you're in. Or what you're going through in life. Today's episode is no exception, however what she's going through is probably harder than any of us could imagine. I had the opportunity to speak to Valaria, @artvaleria, a mom and illustrator in Ukraine. She and her son had to leave their home and find refuge in Poland just a few days ago. I've been following her journey on Instagram and she was kind enough to talk to me about what Ukraine is experiencing right now and what she and her son are going through. She's a strong woman, and here's her story.🎙🇺🇦

Today's episode showcases a mom who is changing the narrative on children's books, inspired by her daughter.

Sarah Bankuti created “The Princess Lily Series” children's books for her daughter Alice, who is on chemotherapy, so she can grow up seeing herself represented in books. Chemotherapy treatments can change your appearance, from losing your hair to how well you can see. Children's books always show princesses a certain way, always including long hair and most certainly not with ports on their chests. This is what inspired her to create The Princess Lily Series. Her daughter and other children going through treatments can see themselves as princes and princesses and feel seen, represented and brave.

She has self-published the first 2 books in the series with 3 more coming out this year. She also donates many books to children’s hospitals and childhood cancer families worldwide. Here's her story.

Kathleen Davis is a retired teacher, wife, and mother of three. She has her masters in Elementary Education and her undergraduate degree in Advertising from the University of Florida. She spent much of her teaching career searching for and reading good children’s books to her students. She believes that books can allow even small children to see things completely differently and encourage them to feel safe and loved.

She wrote BRAVE in response to her two small children’s fears at bedtime. They were not brave, and in fact were terrified and waking up throughout the night. She thought there was no way that her children were the only ones dealing with these fears. BRAVE is meant to help inspire and encourage children to realize there is nothing to fear. They are safe. They are strong. They are loved. They are BRAVE.

I’m so excited to be joined today by a fellow mom and podcast host, Makynna Black. Makynna is a mom, writer, podcaster, AND kindergarten teacher. She lives in southeastern Utah with her husband, 3-year-old son, and well-known neighborhood golden retriever. This girl loves creating. She said she always feels that urge to be creating something, from a new episode she's writing and recording, to lesson plans, designing logos, choreography, and painting props for a school play, and even her hilarious Instagram reels. Today she’s talking about how to show your true self as a creator and mom, without having to curate that perfect social media life, and instead fully leaning into the beautifully chaotic world that is motherhood.

Designer, Printer, Mom and Entrepreneur, Adena Raben.

This episode was extra fun because I got to interview an old friend I went to college with. Adena was raised in a family who loves and appreciates art, so she attributes her love for creating to her family. She is a wife, mother and entrepreneur, and graduated from USI with an Art Degree/Graphic Design emphasis.

Adena started her business in 2013, a year before graduating. She’s been freelancing since before graduation in 2014 and couldn’t see herself doing anything else.

Her freelancing includes a few different facets; web work, print, branding.. she loves to paint, draw, build, create... She has a few Etsy stores she runs alongside freelancing.

“I recently finalized my trademark for Rasure Prints tagline, Embrace the Detours, and I live by this while trying to create and raise my little one.” - Adena
