Does God exist? Part 1

Over the next few weeks the theme of my podcast will seek to provide a plausible answer to the question of does God exist or not. As an exercise I asked my students, in no less than 50 words, to write down firstly if they thought God existed yes or no and then to provide an explanation for their answer. One young man said ‘I don’t believe in God because I cannot see Him.’ This is a common reason why many people adults included are not convinced that God exists. We had a discussion about it and I asked him if he liked science. He enthusiastically said yes. If my memory serves me correctly I think he wants to be a scientist when he grows up. We then talked about the basic building block of all matter, the atom. He was able to accurately describe how the atom is made with the protons and neutrons in the nucleus and the electron orbiting around it. So I asked him if he had ever seen any one of these particles. He said no. I then said that to the best of my knowledge no one has ever seen any of them and yet all scientists accept and believe that they exist. It is one of the fundamental theories of science. Quite a few scientists actually believe in the existence of God. Science and religion are not enemies. Science tries to provide a rational response and explanation for how the universe works. Just as there are thousands of trees and flowers in the Amazon that have yet to be discovered and classified does not mean that they do not exist, we just haven’t found them yet. The dad of a buddy of mine from my university days in the UK many moons ago actually, is a professor of entomology (the study of insects). He has two beetles named after him after he discovered these new species somewhere in his travels many years ago, I think it was in the Amazon area. I think the evidence for the existence of God as the supreme creator exists all around us. He exists in the rustling of the leaves on the trees, in the beauty and fragrance of the flowers, in the delicate fabric of the wings of a butterfly, in the intricate design of each of the billions of snowflakes and so on. He is all around us, maybe we actually look like Him in our own separate ways all 8 billion of us. I am pretty sure no human being made it all the way out to Saturn to put the rings around it. I believe God exists, His proof is everywhere. Do you?
