In this illuminating episode of the Autonomic Homeostasis Activation Podcast, Tom Pals and Ruth Lorensson explore the rarely discussed—but profoundly important—final stage of Maslow’s thinking: transcendence.
Most people know Maslow for the “hierarchy of needs” pyramid, but as Tom reveals, Maslow never created a pyramid at all. And he certainly never stopped at self-actualization. At the end of his career, Maslow emphasized something deeper: a movement beyond the self into a state of connection, meaning, creativity, and belonging.
Together, Tom and Ruth unpack:
Transcendence isn’t mystical or unreachable. It’s the human experience of rising above survival, reconnecting to the larger web of life, and rediscovering the joy of being part of something bigger.
If you’re seeking deeper meaning, grounded wisdom, and a more holistic understanding of what it means to thrive, this episode offers a powerful and refreshing perspective.

In this special birthday episode, Tom and Ruth explore what it really means to thrive as a whole human being. Building on their series about the fundamentals of wellness and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, they dive into the top of the hierarchy—self-actualization—and why it’s never just about “me.”
Together they unpack how homeostasis—that dynamic state of balance in body, mind, and spirit—is both personal and collective. Drawing on insights from neuroscience, somatic practice, and ecology, Tom explains how true wellness emerges when our physiological, emotional, and relational needs are met within connection—not isolation.
From the wisdom of Kurt Goldstein and Abraham Maslow to the biology of “many little lives” within us, this conversation reframes self-actualization as thriving through interconnectedness.
💫 Highlights:

In this episode of the Autonomic Homeostasis Activation Podcast, Tom Pals and Ruth Lorensson continue their exploration of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs through the lens of wellness and trauma-informed wholeness. Focusing on esteem, they unpack what it truly means to “appraise” value—both in ourselves and in others—and how unmet needs and trauma can distort our perception of worth and significance.
Through rich conversation and powerful metaphors—like Tom’s image of humans as uncut diamonds—they reveal how esteem isn’t about hierarchy or status, but about mutual recognition of inherent worth. Together, they examine how physiological, safety, and belonging needs act as catalysts for healthy esteem, and how unmet needs can keep us stuck in cycles of comparison, defensiveness, or exclusion.
Listeners will come away with deeper insight into:
Join Ruth and Tom as they guide listeners toward restoring homeostasis of esteem, a crucial step in the broader journey toward self-actualization and holistic wellness.

In this episode of the Autonomic Homeostasis Activation Podcast, hosts Tom Pals and Ruth Lorensson explore the profound connection between change, homeostasis, and wellness. They unpack why change isn’t something to resist but to embrace—because homeostasis itself is change, the constant dynamic adjustment that keeps us alive and well.
Drawing on neuroscience, Tom explains how the brain perceives change through the amygdala, either as a threat (activating the sympathetic fight-or-flight response) or as an opportunity (activating the parasympathetic rest-recover-digest state). Together, Tom and Ruth explore how our perception of change determines our experience of it—whether we spiral into anxiety and frustration or move toward growth, restoration, and resilience.
Listeners will learn the difference between wanting change and wanting to change, and how cultivating a mindset of beneficial anticipation—seeing change as life-giving—creates space for healing, adaptability, and sustainable wellness.

In this episode of the Autonomic Homeostasis Activation Podcast, Tom Pals and Ruth Lorensson continue their Fundamentals of Wellness series with a deep dive into the third level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs: love and belonging. Together they explore the universal ache for connection, community, and healing felt across society today and ask an essential question: what kind of love and belonging truly nurtures wellness and mental health?
Drawing a distinction between the “tsunami of stress” and “rational intimacy,” Tom and Ruth unpack how certain relationships, communities, and affiliations may appear loving and inclusive, yet actually perpetuate stress, trauma, insecurity, and disconnection. In contrast, they describe how authentic love and belonging cultivates safety, security, contentment, and mutual growth — the true foundation for self-actualization, resilience, and wholeness.
Listeners will learn how to recognize the signs of false belonging, how to choose pathways that foster genuine wellness, relational health, and homeostasis, and why this choice is central to becoming our truest, healthiest selves.
If you’ve ever wondered whether the spaces you belong to are building you up or holding you back, this episode offers clarity, encouragement, and practical insights for personal growth and sustainable wellness.

What if embracing change could transform your life from mere survival to thriving? Join us in this episode as we uncover the transformative power of being open to change.
We begin by exploring the profound implications of the word "open" and how it contrasts with the rigidity of being "closed." Openness invites curiosity, receptivity, and a willingness to question the status quo. Using real-life examples like seasonal shifts and parenting during long summer vacations, we illustrate how adaptability is not just a survival skill but a catalyst for personal growth.
Next, we dive into the concept of homeostasis, often misunderstood as a static state of equilibrium. Instead, we reveal homeostasis as a dynamic process of constant adjustment, much like the precarious balance of a Jenga game. This metaphor helps us understand how small changes can disturb our perceived equilibrium, triggering survival instincts. By redefining homeostasis as a state of persistent, dynamic disequilibrium, we emphasize that embracing change isn't just about coping—it's about thriving.
We also dissect the nature of first-order and second-order changes, highlighting the difference between incremental adjustments and transformational shifts. Through engaging discussions, we advocate for diagnosing underlying issues rather than just addressing symptoms, particularly in areas like health and well-being. We conclude by exploring how second-order change can lead to profound transformations, empowering us to tackle personal, organizational, and global challenges with bold, systemic solutions.
Tune in to this enlightening episode to discover how being open to change can be the key to unlocking your full potential.

In this episode, Tom and Ruth delve into the concept of "Many Little Lives" and its profound implications for individual and collective thriving. They explore the origins of this idea, dating back to Theodore de Bordeaux in the mid-1700s, who used the metaphor of many little lives to describe homeostasis in organisms.
Drawing parallels from nature, Tom and Ruth discuss how every organism, whether it's insect colonies or the cells in the human body, is composed of many little lives working together for mutual accommodation and negotiation. They emphasize the importance of recognizing the interconnectedness and significance of each individual within the collective whole.
The conversation extends beyond the biological realm to encompass human societies, nations, and the global community. Tom and Ruth highlight the urgent need for negotiation and mutual accommodation on both individual and societal levels to achieve collective well-being and thriving. As they conclude, they challenge listeners to embody this paradigm in their daily lives and contribute to creating a world where every little life matters.

In particular, they discuss the differences between mechanisms and organisms, and how a healthy environment is the result of many little lives working together.
In this episode, our guest Scott Turner shares his insights on homeostasis.
J Scott Turner is a distinguished scientist and author known for his groundbreaking work in the field of biology. With a passion for understanding the intricate relationship between organisms and their environment, Turner has made significant contributions to the study of animal physiology, behavior, and ecology.
He is also one of the leading voices on the topic of homeostasis in the nation and in this episode he shares his knowledge with Ruth & Tom. Understanding homeostasis is a key area for Autonomic Healing and Scott’s work and writing have deeply impacted Tom over the years as a therapist as he’s developed Autonomic Healing Activation.
Listen to part two of this fascinating conversation.
In this episode, our guest Scott Turner shares his insights on homeostasis. Scott is an American physiologist who is a leading expert in homestatis. He has contributed to the theory of collective intelligence through his fieldwork on the South African species of termite Macrotermes michaelseni, suggesting the architectural complexity and sophistication of their mounds as an instance of his theory of the extended organism or superorganism.
Scott's work has been very influential to Tom as he's explored the role of homeostasis in Autonomic Healing.
Listen to part one of this fascinating conversation.
In this episode of the Autonomic Healing Podcast, hosts Ruth and Tom explore the concept of grace. They discuss how grace is not only a place of poise, but also a place of gifting. So many people who want to contribute to the world with their gifts are limited because of their perceptions, especially when they encounter the tsunami of stress. Through their conversation, Ruth and Tom they offer insights and strategies for cultivating grace in our daily lives.
In this episode Ruth & Tom explore the neuroscience behind the secure and insecure pathways of the brain.
When we feel safe and secure, the brain's secure pathway is activated, and the parasympathetic nervous system takes over. This system helps us relax, slow down our heart rate, and decrease blood pressure, allowing our body to rest and recover. When we feel calm and relaxed, we can think more clearly and make better decisions.
On the other hand, when we sense or perceive a threat or feel insecure, the insecure pathway of the brain is activated, and the sympathetic nervous system takes over. This triggers the fight or flight response, which prepares our body to either confront the threat or flee from it.
Autonomic Healing Activation intervenes in this predictable brain trajectory - empowering people to stop the inevitable pathway of the insecure and seemingly rational perceptions.
In this episode, Tom and Ruth discuss the dynamics behind our perceptions of ourselves, others, and situations.
Listen to them explain why seemingly rational perceptions exist, why they follow a distinct pattern, and how they can be transformed into rational perceptions through the activation of homeostasis.
In this episode, Tom and Ruth discuss perceptions, the role they play in our lives, and the importance of understanding them. The risks of our seemingly rational perceptions are real - unchecked they keep us in the detrimental patterns of the tsunami of stress.
Learn why perceptions seem rational, how AI is a reflection of this, and why discovering our actual rational perceptions is so important.
Community is a word that's tossed around lightly these days. But how do we create our own sense of community in a world that feels less and less safe? The epidemic of loneliness continues even though we are more connected than ever. There is a real ache in people's hearts for a sense of belonging to a genuine community. But how do people approach community when the risk of being hurt or let down by others is real?
Listen to this episode where Tom and Ruth talk about these dynamics. They discuss the differences between vulnerability and availability, secrecy and privacy, and how knowing the difference can allow you to build healthy intimate relationships with others.
There can be a lot of stress associated with change. Generally, it involves the loss of something, someone, or a situation from the past that is no longer present. As a result of it, we are moved towards new realities and led towards the possibilities of what might be. The way in which we respond to change in a healthy way is crucial because either we are able to take advantage of its benefits or we become stuck in damaging ways of thinking.
Listen in as Tom and Ruth talk about these dynamics within a change context. In particular, they discuss how grief plays a key role in the acceptance of the seeds of change that are being planted.
Welcome to Season Two of The Autonomic Healing Podcast!
As Ruth & Tom introduce the upcoming season's overarching journey, they'll be taking us on a deep dive into rational intimacy, which is the focus of the new season. A huge aspect of our lives is how we relate to ourselves and to each other as a whole. It can either be a stressful experience or a life-affirming experience. When a person finds themselves in a state of homeostasis, rational intimacy becomes accessible as the alternative paradigm to the tsunami of stress.

Merry Christmas from the Autonomic Healing Podcast!
In this special Christmas episode, Ruth & Tom read excerpts from Margery Williams British Children’s novel ‘The Velveteen Rabbit - How Toys Become Real.’
First published in 1922, this beautiful story depicts themes humans can easily relate to - the desire and journey we all embark on to become real versions of ourselves and the productive pain we can all experience as we embrace love.
The great discovery of every human is to find out who we are. Finding out about our identity is fundamental to our being. Listen as Ruth and Tom explore how Autonomic Healing and the activation of homeostasis in Spiritual Formation brings Identity formation—allowing us to thrive instead of just surviving.
In Greek, the root word from which we get 'faith' is the noun Pistis. The word 'faith' can be a loaded word carrying all sorts of connotations for people - good and bad (depending on the person's experience) but at the heart of faith is the invitation to take healthy risks into the unknown so that we get to adventure into the expanse of purpose and desire.
Listen in as Ruth and Tom deeply dive into what Autonomic Healing Spiritual Formation is, why it matters and how it brings life, adventure, and freedom as we discover our humanity.
Ruth and Tom continue to talk about Autonomic Healing and Spiritual formation. In this episode, Ruth unpacks her AHA spiritual formation session, sharing how God spoke to her very visually, which has dramatically impacted her life.
Tom and Ruth continue to unpack Autonomic Healing Problem Solving, where the brain informs the mind what is actually rational. Tom shares the patterns of seemingly rational perceptions that people have and how AHA PS empowers them to move into their actual rational alternatives.
Many people have phobia's - fear of snakes, fear of small spaces, fear of dentists! In fact there are more than 400 phobia's that people experience.
In this episode Tom and Ruth share their latest adventure of climbing one of Colorado's 14,000 ft mountains - Grey's Peak. Listen as Ruth shares how this was an achievement in more ways than one, as her Acrophobia (fear of heights) has always hindered her from climbing. They share how Autonomic Healing and the activation of homeostasis helped her normalize as she achieved the climb and managed to submit the mountain.
Join us as we explore the impact of trauma: Tom shares how trauma affects our physical health, relationships, and perceptions.
In this episode, Ruth and Tom begin to unpack the complex trauma topic. Trauma is something we've now started to talk about a lot more as a society, but understanding what it is, its effect, and its impact on a human being, and more importantly, how we can heal from trauma is a much-desired conversation.
Listen as Tom shares how Autonomic Healing Activation has revolutionized the treatment he offers to traumatized individuals, giving them the hope of not just surviving life but healing and thriving.
Chris DuVernay is Tom's first AHA certified therapist. Listen to the story of how they met, how Chris was personally impacted with AHA, and how Chris is making some incredible headway as he offers AHA to his clients.
In this last episode on rational intimacy, Ruth and Tom explore how loving ourself is essential to loving our neighbor.
How can two words have such a different impact? Do we react, or do we respond to the circumstances we're facing? One is part of the predictable pattern we see in the tsunami of stress, and the other gives way to living in rational intimacy. Listen to part three of our mini-series on rational intimacy. We look at how the choice to respond instead of reacting makes an incredible difference in how we relate healthily as humans.
Part two of our rational intimacy mini-series looks even more deeply at this healthy alternative to the tsunami of stress. Tom explains the importance of understanding what's beneficial and detrimental and how that informs our decisions as we relate to ourselves and others in this healthy paradigm.
Our intimate relationships that are so life-giving can become the casualty as we experience the destructive escalating patterns of the Tsunami of Stress. How we relate with ourselves and others often becomes compromised as we encounter stress, trauma, and those triggering events that make 'then' feel like 'now.'
In this episode, Ruth and Tom introduce the mini-series of Rational Intimacy - a whole new paradigm that Tom has observed over his many years as a therapist that gives us an alternative way to live and a way to thrive in a loving, healthy community.
