For this weeks Strength Chat, I spoke with a powerlifting coach working with beginners to elite level lifters as well as delivering seminars and educational content for fitness professionals, Will Berkman. The content and information that Will produces is so insightful and makes you think about how you can practically improve your training and performance. I think sometimes lifters can get lost and confused in what they need to do to improve, rather than thinking logically and not over complicating things. This is where, I think, Will comes into his own as coach as you can see by the progress and results, he gets with his lifters. Therefore, in this episode, we chatted about developing a system and how lifters can make progress when they look like they’ve fallen into a habit of coasting.

In this week’s episode I got the opportunity to sit down and chat with the Founder and Head Coach of AMP Athletic, Steve Mellor and Matt Curley. It’s safe to say that the last year or so has not been the best for the fitness industry with gyms having to close for large periods of the time. AMP Athletic has been no different. However, due to the service and care that they put into their work, they have adapted to the restrictions placed on them due to COVID to still maintain their high standards for their members. Therefore, in this episode, we chatted about how the gym has coped with closures due to COVID and the transition into online coaching, as well as the impact having a strong culture and community has had in keeping members consistent and engaged. We also touched on the specialist area of AMP Athletic with their work with physios and helping their members move better and pain free.

It was a real pleasure to have this guy as a guest for this weeks Strength Chat. In this episode I was joined by a pro natural bodybuilder and sports nutrition researcher, having published numerous peer reviewed research papers, Eric Trexler. As nutrition can be a bit of minefield at times for some people, the work that Eric does with Stronger by Science in producing blogs and podcasts, it really does provide more easily digestible information that people can use. This can be even more so when you start to look at protein powders and nutrition surrounding training. Therefore, in this episode, we chatted about whether all protein powders are created equal, best practises of using protein powders and their effect on performance.

Too often you can see people opting for the easier or quicker option, but never actually getting closer to achieving their goals. It was awesome to have this guy as a guest on this week’s Strength Chat. In this episode I had the opportunity to chat with the president of Robertson Training Systems and the co-owner of IFAST, as well as having a great reputation of being a go to resource for athletes and coaches within the world of professional sport and the fitness industry, Mike Robertson. Mike is a coach I have followed for some time. How he puts his content and information across has massively helped me as a coach and how I work with my clients. Therefore, in this episode, we chatted about training quality vs training quantity, the minimum you can do to still achieve results, and Mikes analogy of the training bank.

For this weeks Strength Chat, I caught up with a guy I have known and worked with for a long time. He is a strength and conditioning coach with over 6 years’ experience and is currently the Head of Youth Strength and Conditioning at Huddersfield Giants Rugby League, Adam Megretton. With Adams experience of working in the scholarship programme all the way up to the first team, this episode was a great insight into the strength and conditioning world of top-level rugby league. We chatted about the difference in training, if any, between scholarship, academy and first team programmes. We also covered the importance of culture and how to build on the strength athletes already have and how to implement that into speed and power training.

After last speaking to this guy all the way back in episode 57, it was an absolute pleasure to be able to catch up with him in this week’s episode. I know he has massively helped me in the way I put information across and coach my clients. That’s why in this episode, we aimed to clear up how there is more to losing weight or fat than just being in a calorie deficit, good and bad calories, and how there’s more than one way to track results.
