The Tohu App – this is a career pathway app for rangatahi. Statistics show there is a slow uptake of Māori into STEMM careers but tracking forward they will make up around 20% of our future workforce, so we have particularly targeted this app toward Māori students as we are keen to stimulate interest in and understanding of the possibilities in our sectors amongst younger generations through channels that they connect with.
HERA partnered with Auraki Group to develop the app which consists of interactive questionnaires that allow students to discover their alignment to ngā atua, identify their strengths, skills, and interests, and match these core values to STEMM-related jobs that align with kaupapa Māori values.

Together, they delve into the steps taken to blend Māori knowledge systems and tikanga to represent modern construction practices through the lens of the Endeavour Funded Construction 4.0 project, Ngākopa. They discuss the integration of Māori perspectives into contemporary construction methodologies, highlighting the significance of a specially composed karakia by Saul which forms the genesis story of the branding for this project.
This episode also touches on the importance of embedding Māori cultural practices to create a more inclusive and diverse learning environmentand the transformative impacts of acknowledging Māori values in sustainable construction, and digital platforms to leave a lasting legacy for the future of Aotearoa New Zealand’s built environment.

In this episode of Stirring the Pot we're talking with an expert in the circular economy - Ken Webster. We were lucky enough to steal some of his time to chat about the intersection between the circular economy and construction whilst he was visiting New Zealand!

Connect with Ken Ken Webster is currently a visiting Fellow at Cranfield University and the University of Auckland Business School. From 2010-end 2018 he was Head of Innovation for the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a circular economy pioneer organisation. He is also on the supervisory board of the materials passport organisation the Madaster Foundation (NL) and supports the Danish Circular Built Environment Network.
His recent book (with Craig Johnson) ABC&D Creating A Regenerative Circular Economy for All uses food and farming as a focus for exploring the notion of extractive vs circulatory economies and how to transition to the latter. In the built environment he collaborated on Circular Construction and Circular Economy (Eds Felix Heisel and Dirk Hebel). He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) in the UK.

In this episode of Stirring the Pot we’re talking with our General Manager of Structural Systems, Kaveh Andisheh. One thing we have come to recognise is that one of the strengths of HERA is our amazing multi-cultural team who bring their life experiences to the table every day to inform and develop our research, training and project work. The twists and turns they have taken in their life and career pathway make for some interesting insights into who they are, what they value, and where their thought process and decision making comes from.
This is something we have started to unravel in our ‘Whanaungatanga 101’ (relationships 101) approach we have taken through the year, where each of our team have shared their personal story. This has been part of our commitment to mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) in the workplace – which has asked us to culturally shift our general approach to relationship building from introducing ourselves as someone who does a particular role at a business, to someone who you know from a much more relational and personal way.
An extension of this learning, is to now share some of our stories with you with our ‘looking under the hood’ podcast series where we’ll chat with our team members about what makes them who they are, and how they apply that to the mahi (work) they do here at HERA.

If Sahar isn't happy with one of the tests, they have to stop the whole production line till she is! * They have some fantastic graduate programs. Several younger engineers and graduates join them each year. * It took Sahar and the standard committee almost 2.5 years to complete a standard of less than 50 pages!

In this episode of Stirring the Pot we’re talking with Nick Tupara, Kevin Alvie, Adam Furniss and Tim Blackbourn.
Nick is an amazing Māori artist well respected in Māori ringa toi. Kevin is a Project Manager at Gisborne Engineering. And from the WSP team - Adam is a Senior Engineering Geologist based in the Hawkes Bay, and Tim a Senior Structural Engineer in Auckland.
Together their expertise have combined to deliver Te Whitinga o Tamataipunoa – a 8 meter tall monument that is part of a project by the New Zealand Transport Agency to replace the original one-lane Motu Bridge.
On top of this, the project has recently been honoured with winning the small project award at the recent SESOC conference.

In this episode of Stirring the Pot, we talk with Raed El Sarraf, Technical Principal – Materials & Corrosion with WSP in New Zealand.
Raed has extensive experience, in corrosion engineering and asset integrity management of structural steel (and other metallic) structures. This includes durability assessments, specifying protective coatings systems and detailing the correct use of corrosion resistant materials, such as weathering and stainless steels. He has also been involved in the publication of a number of articles, papers, and guidance documents in Australasia. These include the New Zealand and Australian versions of the Weathering Steel Guide for Bridges, as well as the New Zealand and Australian versions of the Steelwork Corrosion and Coatings Guide.

Göran is the author and co-author of over three hundred books, book chapters, papers and articles specialising in strategy, innovation management, research policy and intellectual capital.

The Steel Structures Technology Centre focuses on technical education and services related to the design, fabrication, erection and inspection of steel-framed structures. The firm provides consulting services in steel construction practices and quality. Founded in 1990, SSTC has provided training and support to thousands of engineers, fabricators, erectors, inspectors, building officials and others involved in steel buildings, steel bridges and steel construction.
Bob is also Chair of the Commission XVII on Quality Management at the International Institute of Welding. Commission XVIII maintains the goal to identify, create, develop and transfer global best practices in the field of quality management for welding and allied processes.

He has been part of team collaborating with HERA to drive research into evaluation of capacity factors for API 5L products in non-composite and composite column applications.
We’ll delve into these spirally welded circular hollow sections which have widespread availability in various dimensions, including the forward analysis carried out to calibrate the capacity factor for steel, and the inverse reliability analysis to estimate the required number of material tests to meet the target reliability level for given capacity factors.

In this episode of Stirring the Pot we talk to recent recipient of HERA’s Innovation Award - Chris Bumby.
As a Victoria University of Wellingtons Senior Scientist, he has been heading exciting research that is leading towards the development of hydrogen as a reductant for iron ores. This would mean that water, instead of carbon dioxide, would be the bi-product of reduction and may eliminate the use of coal.
Their work has already developed a small-scale zero-carbon way to make iron that works especially well for New Zealand iron sands. The one-step process is also looking promising in that it produces very high purity iron very quickly.
Excitingly, the team have recently won a $6.5 million grant to start to scale-up the process to tens of kilograms level, taking it one step further towards the aimed eventual commercial scale.

Using learning from his project to deliver the worlds first 3D-printed steel bridge to explain the opportunities for our industry and inspire technology adoption.
Building a tribe - presented by Innovation and Business Commentator, Mike Hutchinson. This key note speaker delved into his background in PR to better understand how communications are key to building a tribe of passionate metalheads who together innovate successfully.
Hook em' & keep em' - retaining staff - presented by HR Specialist, Alia Bojilova. This key note speaker leveraged her experiences in the NZ Defence Force where she was held captive in Syria to better understand resilience, wellbeing in workplace and the importance of disestablishing tiers of leadership to ensure all staff are appreciated and have a voice.
Scanning to the future - presented by Watkins Steel CEO, Des Watkins. This NZ Steel sponsored keynote speaker shared his journey to transition from business as usual to a fully integrated technology system within his workshop. Exploring the challenges faced, the outputs of his decision to embrace the future, and the multiple business opportunities that grew from this action.
An indigenous approach to STEM engagement - presented by Puhoro STEM academy. This presentation brought Te Ao Maori (the world of Maori) to life, why it's important to get more Maori engaged in engineering, and the benefits of programs that foster this belief in terms of diversity of thought and more future engineers in the pipeline.

In this episode of Stirring the Pot, we talk with Professor Chris Cook who is the Former Executive Dean of Engineering at the University of Wollongong in Sydney, Australia.
He was involved with the Facility for Intelligent Fabrication - who deliver expertise, technology, equipment and training in automating steel fabrication to help manufacturing businesses adapt and compete. Their knowledge and resources drawing on decades of research-based welding and automation expertise and training.
He also was part of a trip to New Zealand with colleague John Norrish to identify opportunities for improvement and automation at some of our member companies. Conducting audits and offering in-depth insight into the latest developments in the field of welding automation while here.

In this thought provoking chat, she challenges our current perceptions around resilience and wellbeing within the work place. Making it known that paying lip service to these concepts are a massive risk to our industry which requires huge investment in terms of intellectual capability.
She believes the focus on resilience and wellbeing need to be a great deal more robust, especially if we want to be a business that attracts and retains top staff for greater productivity and profitability.
Saying "Stress steals time. The more busier we are, the less likely we are to pay attention to what matters. And, business as usual is sometimes a huge dusty pile of stuff we don't have to attend to. We need to pause, and focus on the things that matter as apposed to everything that is immediately in front of us."
