RE; CECM HEALTH PRESS BRIEFING ON THE CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN BUNYALA SUB COUNTY
Dear Members of the Press, Public and general community
· Since 1st July 2023, there has been an increased cases of diarrheal disease in Bunyala Sub County
· To date, 11th July 2023 there has been 11 cases that sought treatment at Port Victoria Sub County Hospital of which:
o 9 cases were treated and discharged
o 2 cases are still in admission and in stable condition [1 Female 12 years and 1 Male 16 years]
o No Death has been recorded so far
o One case has been confirmed Cholera positive through laboratory testing
· These cases are drawn from Siginga – Mulusenya; Siginga – Mwangalo, Bulemia, Bukani, Budiera, Khainga and Bubango villages around Sigiri Bridge within the stretch of River Nzoia
· The cases comprise of 7 Females and 4 Males with ages ranging from 12 years to 22 years
· A further assessment shows
o There is no history of travel to Cholera affected areas so the cases are localized
o They all draw their water from River Nzoia, that experienced flooding
o Likely contamination of the shallow wells and latrines due to overflow
· So far the County Department of Health has taken the following actions
o Case Management: procured emergency medical supplies – IV fluids and antibiotics for managing the diarrheal cases
o Identification of a makeshift isolation rooms for case management
o Laboratory analysis: samples have been taken for further Laboratory analysis for identification of species
o Surveillance: activated health facility and community-based surveillance to detect any new cases
o Water Sanitation & Hygiene: the county has secured chlorine granules, water purification chemicals that are being distributed to affected households.
o Health Education & Promotion: undertaking community dialogues in the affected location and sensitizing community members on hygiene promotion, domestic household water treatment and food safety.
· We appeal to the general public to:
o Observe very strict public health measures
Use of Latrines for disposal of human waste including that of babies and infants
§ Proper hand washing with soap and running water
§ Treatment of the domestic drinking water through boiling or use of water treatment chemicals
§ Proper cooking of food and covering to avoid contamination by flies
§ Proper washing of fruits and vegetable during preparation [Avoid eating raw food and vegetables]
§ Keeping the environment clean through proper household waste disposal
o Report any suspected diarrheal case to the local health facility
· At this point we appeal for partner support in responding

• Parents, take all your children aged 2-14 years to the nearest primary
school on Deworming Day for treatment that can improve their health and
education!
• Primary school teachers have been trained to administer free deworming
tablets to all children in all schools
• Remember, ALL CHILDREN, whether enrolled or not enrolled in school, are
eligible for free deworming treatment at the nearest Primary School
Information about Deworming Medicines and Side Effects
- The Programme targets two types of worms: soil-transmitted helminthes
(or common worms) and schistosomes, which cause bilharzia.
- The medicine used to treat common worms is called Albendazole and the
medicine used to treat bilharzia is Praziquantel.
- These tablets are very safe, effective, free, and are provided by the
Government of Kenya. These are the same tablets given at health
facilities.
- Side effects are rare and mild. They can include: stomach pain, vomiting,
and feeling tired. These will go away after some time.
- Those children that have the most worms are more likely to experience
these side effects.
- If the child’s condition is very severe, it is probably unrelated to the
treatment and you should take him/her to the nearest health facility.

• All pre-primary, primary and junior secondary schools in Bunyala sub
county only will deworm their children on the scheduled Deworming Day:
20th June 2023.
• Those in the nearby sub counties close to the boundary may not be prohibited from the essential services, if they visit the neighbouring schools within Budalangi.
• The service is a national program that is available in public hospitals in Kenya for free.
• Parents, take all your children aged 2-14 years to the nearest primary
school on Deworming Day for treatment that can improve their health and
education!

Not using positions well may move children to radicalization and eventually turn out to be violent extremists.

As 16 days of activism are coming to an end the year 2022, we need to consider how climate change has adversely contributed to the challenges met and how we are reaping from the effects.
Climate change contribute adversely in all areas starting from education, business, politics and many more.
Weather forecast from Kenya Meteorological department and aired by Bulala FM helps farmers to prepare early and get good yield in the changing climate. The program dubbed "Oburumbuli" (The revelation) is aimed at revealing issues that may be hidden to the listener for development.
Munyolo is a farmer that listens to weather forecast and shares how much he has benefited in this challenging situation.
Luhya is a very sweet language. However, it is diminishing very fast due to cosmopolitanism. The retired teacher who was also education officer Mr. Chrispinus Oundo Ogesa highlights on the importance of our mother tongue. He also says going back may be very expensive for the government since the teachers we have do not know the language well.
A parent who is also a beneficiary of mother tongue lessons, Pst. William Ngenya Wanyama says the CBC curriculum should bring back the language as the learning aids are from the community yet learners do not know their names in mother tongue.

Kenya Red Cross Society in conjunction with MoH is educating the community on preventive measures to combat ebola.
In his sermon on the 22nd day of November 2022, the priest gave a thrilling sermon. In a mass organized for candidates, students that were retiring back home for long December holidays, entire staff and parents; the catholic preacher delivered a sermon that touched the spirit of the moment.
"At least 1 out of 3 women are abused each day globally," Koffi Anan 2006.
In every woman, there are many men. He who subjects a woman to any form of abuse puts many men to a lot of suffering.

Statistics from the Centre for the Study of Adolescent state that 5,310 youths between 15-24 years are living with HIV and AIDS.
This stigmatized population living in denial fail to observe prescriptions of taking ARV drugs but instead resort to commercial sex at Busia and Malaba border points which are among factors that lead to increased prevalence among youths.
Stigma has resulted into illegal drug trade. Youths who go for ARV drugs sell them to pig or poultry farmers. Farmers in turn mix the drugs with animal feeds to stir them to fast maturity.
My story approach shall promote inclusion of youth friendly facilities in the County Communities of Practice Plan where free adolescent talks will be assured. This will reduce stigma complex web, emotional turbulence and promote adequate support and access to resources from an enabling environment.

It is a precious moment that you join me in this slot where we are discussing how Effluent, garbage and litter release by markets, learning institutions and agricultural facilities cause a serious health problem to livelihood. Recently, Bubwayo market residents and businessmen joined hands in a peaceful demonstrations. In the audio are their voices as they peacefully match to Bunyala sub county headquarters in Budalangi.
Stephen Juma is the chairman of Mubwayo market and says that even though they demonstrated, things are at a standstill.
Mudembi market chairman David Obwama distances himself from having heard or even seen a track collecting garbage. He says diseases erupting on yearly basis are connected to the dirt and poor sanitation. He further claims that the market does not have a latrine even though county government scouts their officers every Friday to collect tax. He adds his worries that should public health close the market due to poor sanitation, theft cases will be on rise.
It is not uncommon to meet flies and maggots hovering over wastes from Markets, learning institutions and agricultural facilities damped along roads, farms and Lake Victoria. Whether this is what made Lake Victoria to be termed as the poison lake by the nation daily leaves a lot to be desired. On 17th February, 2021 experts put their heads together and revealed that this is the reason why fish in Lake Victoria were dying, yet on 17th February, 2020 we had a documentary on NTV about the toxin materials ejected into the lake.
Bilal Oliver is a BMU leader at Mulukoba beach in charge of sanitation and says that a part from Mulukoba beach, Port Victoria market - the epicenter of business in Budalangi does their litter piling in the heart of the market and it stays there for ages.
Silvester Kaywa the County BMU chairman has his addition stating that even though they burn some garbage, smoke emitted is equally toxic.
Who will close an ear to the cry of the tax payer?
Tax payers are tasking leaders to be responsible. Schools and other institutions are called upon to stay aloof from throwing thrash and releasing effluent in the lake and other undesignated places. On the other hand institutions and leaders therein claim there is no set place within for such. The remedy is to burn. Who is caring that poisonous emissions from burning garbage and litter is adding to deterioration of health?
Should a tax payer wait for the county government to come and ensure cleanliness of the markets for better health?
