TSH is a pituitary hormone that communicates with the thyroid gland and essentially tells it to produce more thyroid hormone.
As a result, when someone has hypothyroidism - low thyroid hormones - typically, they'll have elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels. On the other hand, when someone has hyperthyroidism - elevated thyroid hormones - they'll generally have lower TSH levels.
