Welcome to the podcast for techintervide.guide. I‘ve been in the tech industry for over 25 years and have spent more than a decade in management and leadership roles involved in the interview process at many organizations. I‘ve helped people get jobs at all kinds of companies, from small startups to FAANG organizations.
I live stream career coaching and interview preparation advice for people in the tech industry who are looking for their first, or next, technical job . This podcast is made up of Q&A / AMA sessions that I host a few times each month. I talk about behavioral questions, technical concepts, industry trends in interviewing, and what kinds of things are important when answering questions.

An anonymous question came in asking whether the person should tell other recruiters that they're waiting for responses from other companies. I like transparency in communication, but how much you share is a personal preference. I was always willing to be open with recruiters as a show of goodwill whenever I had other interviews, offers, etc, to help coordinate things. You always want companies to think that they are your number one choice.

An anonymous question came in Twitch Chat outlining a long list of programming languages and technologies they learned at a code school / bootcamp, and have not been able to find a job in the year since they graduated. I asked for more context in chat, and offered some general advice. I also asked that they contact me offline (we later connected on LinkedIn) to see if I can help them narrow down where they're having trouble.

Great question from our Discord community regarding my strong preference to having a demonstration link on your resume for project work. If you develop applications which are not browser-based, it's more difficult to let someone explore what you've built. Here are some suggestions for making demo links for mobile apps, desktop apps, programs that run in a terminal/shell, and APIs, etc..

A user in Twitch chat asked my opinion on their employment situation. They're not currently paid to be a software developer, but built some software that makes the company more productive. They asked whether I thought they should turn that software into a freelance business where they adapt the software for other similar industry businesses, OR if I thought they should pursue a full-time development job. I weigh a lot of pros and cons and helped them think about some of the legal implications.

We had an anonymous question come in on Discord from a person who is struggling to understand how to analyze leetcode problems to work out the algorithm type (the "pattern") and/or the data structure to use. They asked whether they can just memorize the syntax of other peoples' answers to fake like they know what they're doing when they get to an interview.

A live chat user on Twitch asked a great question about Data Analysis roles and what I thought of the role. I can't recall the NPR story I listened to a few years ago recarding data analysis and "letting the data tell the story", but I believe it was about census data or something of that nature, and how one awesome lady decided she wasn't going to mold the data to fit a narrative that her public office wanted to tell. Instead, she held firm that they were going to let the data tell the story for them based on the data they had collected. I really wish I could recall the story, it was pretty fascinating.

A question from Twitch chat came in asking my thoughts on why a company would be asking interview candidates to submit a personality test as part of their interview process. While it feels "clinical" to score an applicant based on personality assessments like this, there is SOME value to see how well you fit in on the team since many of these personality tests help gauge "soft skills" and teamwork. Third-party companies who run those personality tests do some pretty interesting correlation in their reports back to the company where you're interviewing to let them know how well you'll work with other people on the team, skill overlaps, and so on. While it's not a replacement for a more humanized interview to see if you'll fit in on the team, it's still a useful tool for companies who are still working out their interview process.

A student from Turing.edu asked my advice on how to handle a situation where they were asked to make yet another take-home assignment. The student was tired of making so many one-off projects that get discarded after the interview, and asked for my advice. Communicate with the company with this example message, and see what happens.

An anonymous question from Discord asked about whether tech industry candidates should be paid for their time to work on take-home assignments. Some companies will not entertain the idea, but there are some out there who could be convinced. If you are an entry level developer, it will be much harder to convince them, but the worst they'll say is "no" so why not ask anyway?

Another great question in Disord. This question was asking my perspective, as a hiring manager, whether it was better to be more likeable in an interview, or to have technical skill. There's definitely a balance, but also depends on the role and what you're expected to know. I share a story about my interviews at Yahoo a long time ago (2007, I had to look it up!)

Wait, what?? Yes, you read that correctly -- you CAN (and should) start the negotiation process as early as possible in the interview stages with a company. You can negotiate things right off the top with the company recruiter to flip the script a little. Don't be TOO aggressive with it, but let them know that you understand your value in the industry, and what your expectations are before even starting the interviews.

If I can find value in what you present, a second page CAN be okay, but the most eye-catching details need to be clear, concise, and easy to find, otherwise even a one page resume will not help you. We had another question in Discord about whether I knew of any FAANG software development roles that were "easier" to get through the interviews than other kinds of roles. We had an anonymous question logged in Discord asking why technical interviews keep asking about data structures and algorithms that are rarely used on the job. In my own 26-year career, I've only needed to implement recursion twice, and I made one "trie" (aka "prefix tree") one time in a production setting. Yet we're asked to demonstrate these skills over and over in interviews. Simple -- our interview process is flawed, and companies need to do better about asking us to demonstrate the actual, tangible skills we'll use on a daily basis.

A user on Twitch claimed they interviewed at a FAANG company and that they were asked a "brain teaser" question about duck-sized horses or a horse-sized duck. While I'm dubious that this actually happened, FAANG company employees are very well trained on how to conduct interviews, and if this question was indeed asked, it was likely meant as an ice-breaker, to start conversation, which some interviewer will do to help alleviate nervousness.

A live Twitch chat question came in asking for advice on how to best prepare for interviews starting in a few months (fall of 2022) for summer internship placements in the summer of 2023. Preparation is key, but knowing what the company even expects when you're still a student can be used to your advantage, too.

A great conversation in Twitch chat came up about asking my age, and whether being almost 50 impacted my job hunt and how I view age in the tech industry. I say it a lot, but if you can tell a good story, and show relevance to a company, and why you matter, and that you can DO the job, your age should not matter. That said, bias is real in the tech industry, too, and it's hard to detect discrimination.

While there are certainly common tools like Git that will be helpful, it's also important to just GO APPLY FOR THAT JOB. If you wait until you "feel" ready, you'll never be ready. Don't follow advice you read online about "you must know these 1,000,000 things or you're not a developer."

One consideration here is WHEN the references would be called, and what they're going to say about you. Most references will only verify your employment from a start date to an end date and little else, depending on the company policies. Some people will over-share information.

A new grad doesn't feel respected in their role, and was curious if they should leave the job and if that would look bad on their resume. I address several things in the answer about communication with their manager to be an effective teammate, because this definitely sounds like something the manager needs to intervene with. Whether it's a potential job like a data-entry position, or a company where you want full-time work, or even a school to learn about development. A follower on Twitch got two job offers (first off, YAY!!), and wanted to know how they should word their communication to the company whose job offer they would not be taking. It can feel great when you have multiple job offers, but you also want to maintain a good reputation. You have to say no to all but one of those offers. You can do this with grace and style, and it's extremely rare that you would "burn a bridge" in the tech industry unless you're a massive jerk about it. And you're not gonna do that, are ya?!

They had plenty of work experience in areas that would qualify them for a CTO type of role within a smaller company, like a small startup. One of my regular VIPs on Twitch said that they're learning Java at their new job, and being given additional project work. They were concerned about how quickly the company will expect them to be proficient. How do you have that conversation with your manager about "learning on the job", so that everyone has their expectations met? Also, don't memorize things that you can look up later -- it's about the strategy, not the syntax.

I've never had a company be actively "hostile" during negotiations, as this question implied, but I have had negotiations stop suddenly with a "no, we can't move on that, period". Most companies, especially in the 2021/2022 job market, are willing to be flexible to find the right talent for their teams.

I recommend reaching out to 3 or 4 people at every company, including recruiters and managers. Having specific questions to ask them is important, and will tell you a lot about the company, and will aid you in your company research to know if you even want to apply for a job there.

One of my Twitch followers didn't do well in a pair-programming exercise in a tech stack that they didn't know very well. The company reached out and asked them to redo that interview step in a tech stack that the candidate knew much better. This is a REALLY good signal from the company, and really fantastic that they extended this invitation!

This is a tricky question to answer, because we won't always have all of the context of someone else's perspective.
I believe you should always prepare to the best of your ability, because you should practice answers to behavioral and technical questions.
The short answer is "as many as you can handle", and in this episode I discuss what that means for you as an individual.
You should answer this question based on what you know about the company's values, but you also need to be genuine about your work discipline.
what are the best ways to prepare to answer technical questions in the interview about your training and project work?
Sometimes in a tech interview, you'll get asked questions way outside your level of experience. Are those questions fair? What should you do to answer them?
Some companies won't even notice or ask about a gap on your resume, but you should always have a prepared and practiced answer just in case they do ask.
If you're really passionate about a company, you could certainly try to get into another role. Some companies will restrict you from applying too many times in a given time period.
There's a fine line between asking questions to test the limits of your knowledge, and asking questions to make you feel uncomfortable on purpose.
In this episode I was asked a question about whether a candidate should disclose personal needs for medical appointments or mental health appointments.
In this episode I help someone who signed an offer letter and then was invited to interview somewhere else. Since there's no guarantee that the other interview will result in an offer as well, I would suggest that you honor your signed offer letter ... for now.
Ah, the age-old question of "tell me about yourself" -- highlight your strengths and background that the company is going to care about the most.
I can only easily recall a single interview where I made a determination of "well ... THIS interview is over." Unless you do something REALLY egregious, it's unlikely that the interviewer will halt the interview and ask you to leave.

Companies expect the utmost respect from us as candidates. What if they don't reciprocate, and treat us in a disrespectful way? How would you handle it, and would you give the company feedback about it?
Getting to know someone takes time and leads to trust. But we tell companies we want SHORTER interviews, FEWER interviews. How can they determine trust that we can do the job if they collect less data?
Asking questions that are too complex can raise the anxiety of interview candidates. Questions should be simple and to the point, and hopefully spark some great conversation.

There's a saying "when everything is a priority, then nothing is really a priority". In the tech industry, you might find yourself pulled in several directions on a daily basis. How do you set your own priorities? As a senior dev, you'll probably have more autonomy to figure this out. As an entry-level dev, you may want to ask for help in this area.
Some companies will have tuition reimbursement, but wait until AFTER you get the job to talk about future goals like this, unless it's a vital requirement for the job itself. Otherwise, the company might bias against you if they don't think they're going to get a good ROI on hiring you if you're leaving for full-time school in the near future.
The interview process doesn't end the day you finish your final round, but you shouldn't have to wait TOO long to get feedback, or an answer from the company about your status. If it's been more than a few days, reach out to them to find out what's up. My guess for this person asking the question is that they came in second place and the company is waiting to see if their first choice accepts an offer.

At some point in the interview process, you're going to be asked about your salary expectations. Some companies won't move forward until they get an answer. You can defer the answer to this question by using some of these tips, but be aware that your PREVIOUS salary should never play into your future salary at any other company.
