In this episode of Civil Discord, Jaffee (sans Phillips) is joined by very special guest Thelma Straight.  Straight, a graduate of University of North Florida, is the author of two books: "The Stories My Foremothers Told Me" (conversations with women of color who witnessed the Civil Rights Movement in the Deep South), and "All You Could See Was the Water: Hurricane Katrina through The Eyes of Children" (conversations with children of color who witnessed Hurricane Katrina.). The conversation revolves around the content and method in her work. Straight describes how her biography has shaped her writing and area of interests, the insights gained from the oral histories of her mother and relatives of that generation growing up in the deep South during tumultuous times, how she came to interview children who had experienced the ravages of Hurricane Katrina, what it means to give people voice to tell their stories, tips and pitfalls in the process of recording the testimony of people who are sharing emotional subjects, and a more recent intergenerational project that trained young black boys in the technique of interviewing and recording the oral histories of older black men.
