Dracula by Bram Stoker chapter 5, narrated by Isaac Birchall

Mina Murray (Jonathan’s fiancée) writes a letter to her best friend Lucy. She tells her that she is practicing her shorthand and is trying to keep a diary so that she can have an exercise book so that she can help Johnathan with his work when he comes back from Transylvania, in about a week…
Lucy responds, telling Mina that she has not too much to say, but replies that any rumours about tall curly haired men are just tall-tales. There is one man who is a doctor that owns a lunatic asylum, but Lucy believes that he would have been a better fit for Mina than herself. Lucy then proclaims that she is in love with a man called Arthur Holmwood.
In a subsequent letter, Lucy writes again to Mina, telling her than she has been proposed to 3 times in 1 day, clarifying that she feels awful for the other 2 men involved. Number 1 was Dr Seward, the man who owns the lunatic asylum. He seemed very sweet, and took the refusal on his chin like a champion boxer, and wished that Lucy could at the very least see him as a very dear friend. Number 2 was a man from Texas. He was a man of many travels and was a great storyteller. Mr Quincy P. Morris poured out his heart and soul at Lucy’s feet, but Lucy again refused and told Mr Morris that her heart lay with another man. Quincy Morris, like Dr Seward took the refusal very well, only asking for a small kiss on the cheek, and that he and Quincy remain friends. Lucy rushes through the final proposal, only saying to Mina that she already knows that it is Arthur, and that it all happened very quickly.
Dr Seward opens his diary, saying that he has a sort of empty feeling after his refusal of marriage, and sets himself to work to avoid sad thoughts. He writes about a patient, of his who is seemingly very mad called Renfield. The patient has insane strength, a sanguine temperament, and seems to be very safe when calm, and very violent when in a state of madness.
Quincy Morris writes to Arthur Holmwood, telling him that he knows of his proposal to Lucy, and that both he and Dr Seward want to congratulate him on the proposal, but that the two others need to drink from their cups of sorrow.
