The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne chapter 7, narrated by Isaac Birchall Hester takes Pearl to Governor Bellingham’s residence to deliver some ornate ceremonial gloves that he commissioned her to make, and to investigate whether the rumour that Pearl could be taken away from her is true. Many members of the town suspect that Pearl is a demon child, and that Pearl should be sent away from the town to keep them all safe. En route, Pearl is attacked by a group of children, who fling mud at her.
The house is built to replicate the homes of the English aristocracy, is old and stuffy, with portraits of the now deceased members Mr Bellingham’s family adorning the walls, and a suit of armour glistening in the corner. Pearl is enamoured with the armour and calls Hester over to look at her reflection in the shining metal plates, Hester however is ashamed that the only thing reflected in the breastplate of the armour for her, is the scarlet letter, now twice magnified on the metal.
