KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM KATRINA:
- One of the ways we cope is by disconnecting, but in that you miss the opportunity to be present and be with what’s right in front of you.
- A common misconception is that DEI is short term work, it’s work you can set immediate goals and money around and it will be fixed within a years time, but it’s taken centuries to get to where we are now. Setting goals and giving a timeline is not going to happen.
- As much as it is about having a plan, it’s about doing so for the long term.
- DEI serves everyone… not just certain communities.
- People want to go where things are good.
- People need to understand the optics of DEI are bigger than people know.
- The partners we’re working with don’t fundamentally understand DEI and if they don’t understand, they don’t necessarily believe.
- It can sound like organizations have stepped back from their commitment to DEI, but does that mean they’re eliminating everything? Absolutely not.
- Extend more grace to folks, we don’t know anyone’s individual situation or what commitments they have, sometimes, they just cannot speak out.
- I always ask myself am I the best person to talk about this? Is there work I can do in other places? It might not be seen, but it will have an impact.
- Rest instead of burn yourself out!
