Matthew 17 - The Transfiguration

17 Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.

  • Six days later

o six is the number for man

o this was six days after Jesus told his disciples that following him would be costly

§ that each one would have to pick up his cross and follow him

§ he told them that anyone who would try and save their life would lose it

§ and anyone who loses their life for his sake would find it

§ it is the opposite of what the carnal man thinks in his mind

§ He then promised that there were some listening that would see Jesus coming in his glory before they taste death

§ this was a radical promise and it gets fulfilled in the next verse

2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.

  • Transfigured is “metamorphoo” which means metamorphosis

  • Jesus was literally changed back into His glorious state for these men to see

o Jesus “Jehovah is salvation”

o Peter “a rock or stone”

o James “supplanter” or “replacer”

o John “Jehovah is a gracious giver”

o Moses “drawing out”

o Elijah “my God is Jehovah”

o The names of the men in this story tell the real story!

o Jehovah is salvation, a rock, a replacer, a gracious giver, drawing men out.

o My God is Jehovah!

4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

  • Peter doesn’t seem to know what to say to he just spouts out

o It is good for us to be here (no kidding!)

o If you wish, I will make three tabernacles here

§ Tabernacles are tents (what would they do with them)

§ One for you “Jehovah is salvation” (GOD)

§ One for Moses (Moses represents the (LAW)

§ And one for Elijah (My God is Jehovah” (RAPTURED) never died

§ This is a picture of God’s bigger plan acted out in front of Peter, James and John so they would see a picture of what Heaven is like for real.

· Glory beyond our understanding

· Fellowship and live interaction with those who have previously died!

5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. 7 And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.” 8 And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone.

  • While he was still speaking (this means they got interrupted)

o This means suddenly something happened

  • A bright cloud overshadowed them

o How does a bright cloud overshadow you?
