Acts, Chapter 10 - Cornelius’s Vision

10 Now there was a man at Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort, 2 a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, and gave many alms to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually.

  • We left Chapter 9 when Peter raise Dorcas from the dead and many people believed

  • now there was a man at Caesarea named Cornelius

o a centurion of what was called the Italian cohort

o this means he was in charge of 100 soldiers

§ This means he was a man of authority from a foreign land (like Jesus)

  • A devout man and one who feared God with all his household

o A devout man (means he was to devoted to God and doing what his right)

o And one who feared God (means He had great respect and fear of God to the point which he would not want to disappoint God)

o With all his household (this means he was the spiritual leader of his family)

  • And gave many alms to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually

o Gave many alms (help & money especially to those in need)

o To the Jewish people (God promises special blessings on those who bless the Jews; God also sent Jesus to the Jews first)

o And prayed to God continually (talking to God always; this is what we should do)

  • Notice the attributes:

o A man of authority from a foreign land

o A devout man

o And one who feared God with all his household (a spiritual leader)

o And gave many alms to the Jews (helped the Jews in need)

o And prayed to God continually

o These all the same attributes as Jesus!

3 About the ninth hour of the day he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God who had just come in and said to him, “Cornelius!” 4 And fixing his gaze on him and being much alarmed, he said, “What is it, Lord?”

  • The ninth hour is very curious

o It was the same time of the afternoon prayer for the Jews

o but Cornelius wasn’t Jewish_

o That is the same time when Jesus died

  • He clearly saw in a vision an angel of God

o the 9th hour is 3:00pm; it must not be a dream

o it something called a vision; something like watching a movie from heaven

o angels are messengers from God

  • He had just come in and said to him “Cornelius!”

o This angel knew his name and spoke his name only at first

o That is all it took to get the correct reply

§ Notice his response seems to imply it is the Lord speaking

And he said to him, “Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God. 5 Now dispatch some men to Joppa and send for a man named Simon, who is also called Peter; 6 he is staying with a tanner named Simon, whose house is by the sea.” 7 When the angel who was speaking to him had left, he summoned two of his servants and a devout soldier of those who were his personal attendants, 8 and after he had explained everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.
