"I want to say something but I don't want to... offend them, sound like a jerk, come off as pushy or needy, or ruin the relationship.." Sound familiar? You're in good company. Join me as I break down a communication method proven to increase empathy and compassion, and lead to better confrontation about behaviors that need to change.
"Nonviolent communication" (in this episode I have titled it Compassionate Confrontation) was created by Marshall Rosenburg and was published as a book in 1999, which you can buy on Amazon, here. I've practiced this and coached colleagues, friends, and loved ones through its principles enough to see its success, and I know you'll see it too. It isn't designed to end conflict entirely, but when you use it to start the conversation, you're more likely to get what you need or find a solution, all while bringing you closer to the person you're talking to.
Click here for Compassionate Confrontation visual to reference as you listen or review after the episode! It covers these four simple steps:
1. Share an observation
2. Describe a feeling
3. Express a need
4. Make a request
