Because the Word of God accurately reflects the culture of the day, some have wondered if Scripture minimizes the value of women. Gary explains that not everything that the Bible records happening happened because it was God's plan. It was often a reflection of the culture. But Scripture often ran counter to the culture in the advancement of women's rights.

While many in the first century still regarded women as inferior and even as property, Scripture taught men not only to treat their wives as equals (as themselves) but actually to elevate her worth and value her above his own self to the point of sacrificing himself for her.
