This meditation is on Compassion. There is a distinction between compassion and empathy. Our brains are wired for compassion. Empathy is an emotion a feeling. When all we have is empathy, we burn-out, exhausted. There’s no action. It’s all emotional.
When Compassion is developed, circuits in the brain will trigger compassion. Our brain shows dramatic changes in two areas: increased activity in the prefrontal cortex with well-being and in the areas involved with motor planning. Our brain primes our body to take action and "do" good. We jump into action and do whatever we can to help to relieve suffering without all the emotion.
Empathy is not bad. It’s actually good for developing compassion. Notice when you’re feeling too much empathy and taking on the suffering of the world – the world on your shoulders. You can stop all the emotion and have compassion. You will notice that it feels good, and you find some action that you can do to stop the suffering.
Compassion is Loving-Kindness. How important is self-compassion? Until you can have self-compassion, you can’t really practice compassion for others. Having self-compassion breaks the victim mentality. You’re no longer feeling sorry for yourself. You’re in action to stop the personal suffering. This meditation will help develop compassion.
