In this episode, Nick Carter and his assistant Chick piece together the various fragments of the two concurrent investigations: the identity of the dead man in Harlem, and the disappearance of the Reverend Austin Maybrick, and how the stenographer Kate Crandall is involved in his sudden disappearance. Meanwhile, Nick's second assistant Patsy Garvin is in cahoots with a gang wanting to kidnap Miss Crandall to see what she knows about some missing money! Will Patsy manage to keep his identity safe?
