In this week's episode, I sat down with Zack Grimes founder and event organizer of Rallye in the Ozarks, an event that embraces vintage 4x4 vehicles for a weekend filled with wheeling and camping. Held at SMORR (Southwest Missouri Off Road Ranch) located in Seymour Missouri. The event takes place October 4th & 5th. The link to register is below. Very affordable and family friendly! In this episode we, or I should say, I nerd out talking about old rigs. Zach's passion for International Scouts is contagious! Enjoy and share with a friend!
BIOZack Grimes is a Vintage 4x4 enthusiast that has been driving and repairing International Scouts most of his life. Along with this pastime his parents introduced an interest in camping and traveling to new destinations at an early age. After moving to Southwest Missouri a couple years ago he was able to combine all of his hobbies into one place in the form of overlanding. New endeavors include hosting an Annual event for Vintage 4x4’s to gather and share in the experiences that come with maintaining rolling museum pieces.

"My father raised me to appreciate nature. He would take me, my brother and sister into the outdoors consistently. He always had a way of making everything interesting so we would want to learn more. I spent nearly my entire childhood catching various critters and fishing with my dad. In my early 20’s the need for nature came back with a vengeance. I bought the FJ Cruiser and have been exploring as often as I can since. I moved to Colorado at age 24 to experience the Rockies.
In high school I was a video editor in my theater class, which at the time I liked to learn about, but never saw myself pursuing video work. Of course today that skillset has proven useful for my hobby of creating videos of gear and trips. Of course filming is the fun part, editing is the work.
Now I try to spend as much time exploring as possible along with my wife, Natalia. She was raised in similar fashion in the pacific northwest and is a travel nut. Her preferred method of travel is via a plane, but she never turns down a good road trip. She is wonderful."

I've got good news and bad news. The good news is, we are still on a journey and the trail hasn't stopped. The bad news is, there is a fork in the trail. There have been 76 episodes on this epic journey. What made this podcast unique has ultimately led to a fork on the trail. Due to my schedule and his schedule and ultimately casting different visions around the way ahead we thought it best to split off on our own journeys. This is bittersweet to say the least, however, the benefit of everyone in the community is the creation of another platform.
What can you expect going forward:
For those that don't know, I have another podcast called Do Hard Things- motivation, inspiration and started an apparel line. I just recently retired from the Army after 27 years and am now finally settling into the new normal. I have been traveling more recently- international and stateside and I have been focusing on creating a life of freedom so I can enjoy what I love even more. I also love the outdoors, adventure, and travel. I am going to use this platform to talk about and share the outdoors, adventure and travel, and create content and interview people who love the same. I love How to Educational, inspirational stories, and just talking about life and seeking adventure.
Next week this podcast will rebrand- talk a little bit more about the way ahead.

In this episode, Jay and Benji have a great conversation with Michael Terry of Dispatches Adventure Rides and how he travels across Canada on his KLR 650 and end the stigma associated with mental health.
Michael Terry is a 23-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. He retired in 2018 due to complications arising from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and immediately began to feel the effects of depression, loneliness, isolation, as well as loss of identity and purpose.
To combat these side effects, Michael began to ride his motorcycle around Canada and to speak openly about his struggles living with PTSD and his challenges transitioning to civilian life. Not only has this forced him to face his own issues head-on, it has also allowed him to continue to serve his community, to challenge himself mentally and physically, to find new passion and purpose, and to begin to heal.
2023 marks the sixth year of the Dispatches Adventure Ride Speaking Tour. From May to July, Michael will be touring across Eastern Canada to connect with Canadians of all backgrounds in order to normalize discussions surrounding mental health and transitional issues. This will be done through encouraging people to connect along the route (meeting at pre-determined coffee stops, joining in the ride for a time), formal speaking engagements (professional development sessions, peer support groups, service clubs, etc.) and other outreach activities.

Kenny Ehresman is an IT director for Advanced Technology Recycling. Kenny has always been into IT and electronics, but his real passion is cars. When Kenny was 10 years old, his dad bought a go-kart. This ultimately led him to bigger toys such as cars, trucks, and motorcycles, really anything with wheels and a motor. In 2014 Kenny met his wife Jessica. Kenny and Jessica have a beautiful blended family consisting of 5 wonderful children and two huskies. Like most families, they live very busy lives, and electronics tend to consume a lot of downtime for their children. As time has passed, Kenny and Jessica have come up with solutions to get their kids outside. So in 2021, Kenny received a 2021 Bronco Sport as a gift.

Joe Meier is from Michigan’s upper peninsula. He has worked as a first responder for 5 years and a paramedic for three years. Over the past three years, I’ve been studying biology with a premed concentration and recently got accepted to PA school. I was in the Army Reserve for six years, where I served as a petroleum supply specialist and medic. My overlanding experience is much shorter, but I feel like this podcast is helping fill in my knowledge gaps.

They are trying to become the Youngest Pair to Circumnavigate the Globe via motorcycle. We discussed their love of travel and adventure, travel considerations, how they have planned and budgeted for the trip.
Ollie and Lavie met on a cherry farm in Tasmania 5 years ago and have been traveling continuously. They lived in a van in Australia for 2 year. In 2019 they backpacked 3000km across New Zealand. In 2020 they returned to the UK due to the pandemic and cycled 2000km across Britain on £100 bicycles from John o’Groats to Lands End. In 2021 the drove 15,000km across Europe in a £550 van through 13 countries to the border of Albania and back

In this episode of the Budget Overland Podcast, Benji has a great conversation with our overlanding friend Erick Huertas, who is passing through on a cross country trip.
Erick Huertas spent most of his childhood in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Growing
up in a low-income household, he developed a passion for the arts as a form of
expression early on. Upon graduating High School, Erick enlisted in the United States
Navy as a member of the esteemed Hospital Corps. As he began to travel the world as a young adult, he turned to photography to document his memories and the places he had traveled.
While working as a healthcare worker in the fight against COVID, he purchased a Land
Rover LR3 as a ‘fixer-upper.’ In the summer of 2021. He embarked on the famous
Trans-American Trail, a 5,000-mile dirt road trail from Cape Hatteras, NC to the Oregon
Dunes. Erick spent 86 Days on the road and traveled across 33 states and 13,000 miles
during his westward journey. Documenting his journey in a handwritten journal and
taking photos on his iPhone, he will be featured in “Land Rover Owner International” in
February 2022.
Erick’s moderate success through his trail encouraged him to take photography more
seriously. Erick soon purchased a camera and enrolled in The University of
Washington’s Professional Photography Certificate. Through the Guru Shots Photo
Competitions, he has been featured in 11 exhibitions and three magazines. Currently, he writes for LRO and “Rover Depot” documenting his expeditions. Erick also shoots stock photography for Alamy and iStock, a subsidiary of Getty Images.
Erick hopes to blend his passions of Photography and writing with his passion for
medicine as he aspires to work for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).
In addition to being a student of Photography and Nursing, he studies French, German
and Arabic. Erick has a strong belief that language and art are some of the best ways in
connecting across different cultures.

In this episode Benji and Jay have a great conversation with Michael Sweet about his various overland builds and sharing his lessons learned with trying to find the right overland set up.
Michael and his wife love overlanding and have a lot of experience and have experimented with a variety of builds. They have been off-road/overland camping with a few RVs and a variety of other trailers for years in including a 24ft travel trailer, an A-Frame trailer, bed rack buildout, backpacking gear in the truck, and have been throughout Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas and other areas. With tons of lessons learned from those, he built an overland/offroad trailer (now sold), built a slide-in camper (also sold), and a wedge-style truck camper currently on my Canyon.

-Do not go into debt (aside from vehicle) to purchase gear
-Have a travel budget bigger than your vehicle budget
-Never shame another overlander for what they use

- Completed a full, frame-off, restoration on our Toyota Chinook. We combined a 1978 Chinook shell, with a 1982 4wd chassis and the drivetrain from a 1999 4runner.
- Compiled a savings that would allow us to quit our jobs (heavy equipment mechanic and field technician with Alaska Fish and Game) and travel overland for two years.
- Displayed our vehicle in all three Overland Expo DIY showcases.
- Featured on Expedition Portal.
- We are, as always, working to improve our vehicle as we go, right now we are building a bumper storage box and trying to integrate a snorkel.

Aaron Ridley has had a camera in his hands since he was a kid, teaching himself the craft from the bottom up over the years. He is now a photographer, filmmaker, and adventurer based in central New Mexico. He’s spent most of his life with the clear skies and purple mountains of the southwest.
Driven by the desire to travel and explore the outdoors, he pursues his overland build, a 2003 Nissan Xterra that he’s been gradually adding to for the past two years. With 20,000 miles and counting, Aaron and his wife Taylor seek to sample all that they can.
Aaron and Taylor have been married since 2018. Having started with very little, they have built a life full of fun and adventure through careful planning and the support of close friends and family.
Aaron has been documenting his adventures since 2019. Sharing his experience and knowledge both on YouTube and Instagram, he hopes to inspire other people to get out, travel, and experience life.

In this episode of the Budget Overland Podcast, Benji and I have a great conversation with Erick Huertas
Erick Huertas spent most of his childhood in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Growing
up in a low-income household, he developed a passion for the arts as a form of
expression early on. Upon graduating High School, Erick enlisted in the United States
Navy as a member of the esteemed Hospital Corps. As he began to travel the world as a young adult, he turned to photography to document his memories and the places he had traveled.
While working as a healthcare worker in the fight against COVID, he purchased a Land
Rover LR3 as a ‘fixer-upper.’ In the summer of 2021. He embarked on the famous
Trans-American Trail, a 5,000-mile dirt road trail from Cape Hatteras, NC to the Oregon
Dunes. Erick spent 86 Days on the road and traveled across 33 states and 13,000 miles
during his westward journey. Documenting his journey in a handwritten journal and
taking photos on his iPhone, he will be featured in “Land Rover Owner International” in
February 2022.
Erick’s moderate success through his trail encouraged him to take photography more
seriously. Erick soon purchased a camera and enrolled in The University of
Washington’s Professional Photography Certificate. Through the Guru Shots Photo
Competitions, he has been featured in 11 exhibitions and three magazines. Currently, he writes for LRO and “Rover Depot” documenting his expeditions. Erick also shoots stock photography for Alamy and iStock, a subsidiary of Getty Images.
Erick hopes to blend his passions of Photography and writing with his passion for
medicine as he aspires to work for Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).
In addition to being a student of Photography and Nursing, he studies French, German
and Arabic. Erick has a strong belief that language and art are some of the best ways in
connecting across different cultures.

In this episode of the Budget Overland Podcast, Benji and I have a great conversation with Gene Sherman about overlanding in converted ambulances. Gene provides great insight on why choosing an abundance and converting it is great alternative to more expensive manufactured luxury rigs.
About Gene: Gene is a lifelong maker, entrepreneur, teacher, and public speaker who was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated with his family to America in 1977. From Erector sets and making plastic models as a child, to becoming a machinist/tool-maker by age 21,Gene has taught hundreds of manufacturing company employees in the use of the latest technology. In his 30's he worked at a university and owned a robotic vehicle start-up. Over the past decade Gene has turned his focus towards helping people by creating a unique hands-on skills learning center for advanced manufacturing to help them find meaningful and rewarding careers.
Gene created Vocademy, a unique academy where people of all ages came to learn a breadth of amazing and valuable skills. For the past 10 years Gene has had 30 employees and been involved in teaching over a dozen amazing skills every day. Vocademy offered everything from traditional hands-on skills classes, to high-tech, in-demand modern skills, and all the way to an amazing, six month, Maker Skills Academy program.
But in March 2020, COVID-19 shut down his school. This pandemic took away 80% of their revenue and they could not survive. While spending six months closing the business, he decided to take a slower pace and work on personal things that I had planned for many years. Gene went back to work at a local high school as a teacher. This "normal job" has given me the time and freedom to write, develop new ideas, and work on my personal projects which include ambulance conversations.
