One hundred and seventy-five years ago, it was the prophet Brigham Young who led the Saints into the Salt Lake Valley, pounding his cane to say, "This is the place!" These pioneers paved the way for many, including Hideaki Miyoshi, the owner of Tokkuri Tei, one of Hawaii's most-recognized Japanese izakaya (Japanese bar-style casual dining) restaurants, who passed away on July 5 due to complications from a fall at his home on June 20--the day after Alex and his family went to dinner at the restaurant. In this fourth episode of the Summer Sessions, Alex pays tribute to the man they nicknamed "Santa-san" and shares his memories of Miyoshi, his sushi chef and business partner Kazu Mitake, and his ability to adapt, which lasted through three different locations on Kapahulu Avenue and a global pandemic.
