Design30 is a weekly podcast providing useful design tools and strategies to improve creativity, innovation, and overall design confidence. I will discuss ideas both new and old, ranging from design thinking to design reviews on books and products. In this episode I discuss how design constraints can actually lead to more freedom in decision making, eliminate design paralysis, and reduce writers "designers block". A lack of constraints will inevitably lead to compounding arbitrary decisions which will wreak havoc on project budgets and timelines.

In this episode of Design30 I provide a few examples of why I believe simple is rarely easy. I provide an example of a simple stainless steel bowl and how it is manufactured, why the "simple" idea of the iPhone isn't so simple, and compare an iPod shuffle to an old school record player. At the vary end, I briefly touch on the idea that complexity in design is conserved.

In this episode I discuss the next three phases of the design thinking process. First, is the prototype phase where you construct low-fidelity versions of your best ideas from the ideation phase. Then you test these with actual users and record feedback. That feedback is then implemented as design iterations and improvements during the iterate phase. Next, you cycle back through these phases with your updated, improved, or completely new prototypes.

I you are a leader and you can not articulate what the vision of the company is, then there is no way the people you are leading know what the vision is.

In this episode I provide one simple strategy to improve efficiency and reduce errors. What's the secret? You're duplicating information too often! Stop it! Duplicating information requires you to update multiple documents, videos, or files when that information changes, which it inevitably will. Change is constant at work just as it is in life. So, prepare for it and do not place the same information in multiple locations that will all require individual attention and updates in the future.
Never duplicate information without strategy and forethought!

In this episode I go through the website for the innovative new product called the Q-Collar. This simple yet effective device has been proven to reduce traumatic brain injury (TBI) in athletes as well as service members. It has been worn by NFL athletes (among others) to reduce the negative impacts of repetitive head impacts and concussions. In my opinion, this device is a perfect example of how design and creative thinking can be utilized to create products capable of improving and/or saving lives.
