The hymn which we know as “Amazing Grace” was first introduced to the world by John Newton on New Year’s Day in 1773, exactly 250 years ago. The story behind the hymn is as amazing as the grace which it speaks of. The words of the song capture the essence of the Christian faith. Christianity is not a religion based on rules. It is not a religion which requires its followers to go through a series of steps to achieve the pinnacle of faith. It is not a religion which demands perfection of its followers. The heart of Christianity is contained in Newton’s words: God’s amazing grace, his unconditional forgiveness and love, enable us to have a relationship with him.
