There weren't many women in the science field in the 70's due to sexist politics, and it was difficult for any young girl to have a role model to relate to in that field. That is until Sally Ride came into the picture and made everyone take notice that women are just as capable of doing anything male astronauts can do. (even though she really hated the attention)
