Hi and welcome. I’m Dr. Barbara Byers and my passion is spiritual formation. As a speaker, author and counselor I’ve seen firsthand the fractures of the soul that keep us from a truly abundant life. I’ve created videos for the practical process of healing those fractures and walking in transformation.
This is Isaiah 61:1-4, the call to bring good news and the healing power of Christ to those afflicted, broken and held captive so that lives are rebuilt, repaired and raised up to true freedom and identity.

Addiction is a complex issue creating a lot of pain but in the power or the Cross and healthy community there is such hope.
Adverse childhood experiences have long term effects well into adulthood. Children who experience adverse experiences, crises, and trauma need support and understanding.
The language of the Bible is the language of the human heart and as we declare his living words over ourselves, our heart comes alive with faith and our mind is renewed.

We can change our mind by recognizing faulty thoughts and misbeliefs, and by choosing to live in renewed thought by through God's empowering Spirit.

Our soul is the land that belongs to us. By this last chapter I hope you are recognizing the interrelationships between each capacity of the soul. As we continue to increase in the Lord, growing in grace and maturity, our soul’s voice becomes stronger and surer. Since spiritual formation doesn’t happen by default, deliberately engaging in holy habits will help us press on to know the Lord. Our soul is then built on His goodness and faithfulness. Holy habits help us fight entropy and continue to gain ground. The disciplines themselves aren’t transformational but they create a space for God to enter and encounter us, restoring us to His holy design. We are opening our heart, creating room, for the One who speaks and transforms and pours Himself into us.

We experience real transformation as we become mature and complete in Christ. As we experience continued growth and transformation throughout our lifetime, Jesus is taking over more and more ground in our souls -- revealing, conquering and redeeming the depths and intricacies of our soul. When the Lord is working within, He recreates every capacity of our souls, omitting nothing. Our collaboration in this is essential. So, we pray that He will give us a deep hunger to want to grow more, knowing more of Him within our souls.

Introspection: What is it? A unhealthy habit of inward self-examination, thinking and rehashing. Exercise of looking inward to find truth, pre-occupied in our minds with the past or the future. Isolates us in a lonely monologue. Leads us to despair, shame, guilt, pride, uncertainty. Can be very seductive and dangerous, developing into a stronghold where the demonic hides. Self-examination through either self-reproach or self-approval, it can be relentless in criticism. Auto-immune disease of the soul -- uses its own resources to turn on itself and devour itself. Rational mind turned in on itself and analyzing, thereby paralyzing the receptive intuitive mind of the heart. We are using our beautiful mind in wrong, unhealthy ways, without proper balance. Underlying these patterns of thought is a deeper anxiety and unrest, an unsettled state where we may constantly feel something is wrong. Keeps us fixed on ourself, interrupts the Presence. Introspection is a closed-circuit loop, recycling darkness that leads us to illness of soul.

God’s Image Gen. 1:27 So God created man in His own image. Vital part of our gender identity is our personhood in His image – with the strength and initiative of the masculine and the beauty and tenderness of the feminine. God’s design is to release His image into humanity, in both male and female. We can have severe gender confusion and confusion about our own masc-fem identity. Two attributes within our soul: Masculine and Feminine The voice of the masculine is “I initiate, act and establish.” The voice of the feminine is: “I receive, respond and nourish.” The masculine is holy strength, the feminine is holy beauty! God holds within Himself both qualities. (See Ex. 34:5; Isa. 66:13 for the feminine.) Within each of us, God wants to restore the polarity and the complementary of these. The true masculine will look different in male than in female; the true feminine will look different in woman than in man. But we are more fully man or woman when comfortable with "opposite" attribute.

Worry is a habit of mind that creates unease and apprehension. But we can learn to “cast our cares” on the Lord.
What is a sense of being? To have a sense of being is to have a sense of fullness and richness as a person. It is the ability to truly say: “I am and my personhood is good.” It involves the deep security of knowing we are, we have a solid existence, and that: we have value and worth, it is well within us and can enjoy being alive, we have the ability to trust and be connected with others, we belong, that we have a place; we are competent and can handle life’s difficulties, there is no shame in being ourselves. The one with a sense of well-being is free from undue fears and anxieties about the present or future. Even if you must wait, you know your needs will be met.

God calls us to know him in the secret place with him, a place of love and friendship, security and safety.
Desire is a well of energy within us, the great capacity to dream, hope, yearn and aspire to that for which we long. C. S. Lewis and Fr. John Gaynor Banks write of desire as a “radiant thing,” the “mighty force” that is “part of the atomic energy of the soul.” If desire is indeed beautiful, radiant, and explosively powerful why then do we not live alert and fully alive to our deep hearts’ desires? Are we perhaps afraid to desire so deeply because the possibility of disappointment and failure loom greater than bright expectation? In that fear, do we anticipate nonfulfillment more than fulfillment, and thus live against true hope and desire?

When we seem to be unseen or unrecognized, these times of hiddenness or times of restriction, often hold gifts for us.
The origin of the word emotion is from the Latin emovere which means to stir, to disturb, to move out or move through. So, to experience emotions is to have inner movement. (MacNutt lecture 2009). God designed us to express our emotions in healthy, reflective ways and to enjoy a full life of properly ordered and energized emotions. This is an essential and beautiful living energy of the soul, like a river continually changing its course. We need a structure to channel the river, and that is our soul. The voice of our emotions is: “I’m stirred” or “I’m moved by.” The false alternatives are to be either unmoved, stoic and repressed or neurotic and overly emotionally expressive in our reactions. If we weaken this voice because of repression, we become ill within, unable to access our emotions and be moved by them appropriately. These emotions will find a different means of expression, such as physical illness or getting stuck in only one emotion such as anger or sadness. Conversely, if we dramatically and passionately express all our emotional reactions, we will create confusion and destruction and stay in immaturity. We need to be brought back to the truth of how we are created and how to express emotions well and in complement to the other parts of our soul.

Anger is an essential but often misunderstood emotion. How we express it reflects our maturity.

Appetites are the connectors between the body and the soul. Appetites engage all of our bodily senses and are the energy of the body: hunger, thirst, rest, sexual drives, exercise and touch. Legitimate needs (interconnected with our thoughts and emotions and desires) that help us survive and thrive, enjoy life, connect with others, take care of ourselves in good ways. Appetites are like power supplies of energy that propel us forward but must be channeled. Our physical being is a gift. So how do we live in our bodies? We should have a deep, sacred courteous, dignified relationship with our body. Our privilege and responsibility: make friends with your body; be at home in your body. Jesus was incarnate; he came in a body, a vitally important expression of God’s nature on earth. Rom. 12:1-2: present our bodies to Him as sacrifice of worship while renewing your mind. 1 Cor. 6:19-20: as the redeemed we glorify God in our bodies as a showplace of His greatness Rom 8:13 (PAR): we can present our bodily parts to Him as “weapons of righteousness.” In spiritual formation, we can make our bodies allies of our Christian walk. Our body is our domain so it is our responsibility to not let the inclination for wrong dominate. Enemy hates created matter so our enemy is going to try to distort/destroy what is of our body.

The will is vital in our development and needs to be fully alive, healthy, strong, and active so the we can choose resolve and initiate. The will is the prime minister of the soul.
“Marriage is intended to be a way in which man and woman help each other to become what God meant each one to be, their deepest and truest selves.”
The conscience is a guardian of the gate into our soul. The voice of the conscience is: “I guard, or I watch.” As gatekeeper its function is to keep in righteous and worthy thought and choice while keeping the unrighteous and unworthy barred from entry. But if the wrong things have been allowed in, then the function of the conscience is to produce true guilt so that wrong can be faced and remedied. Hebrews 13:18 says: “We are sure we have a good conscience desiring to conduct ourselves honorably in all things.” This describes the function of a healthy conscience motivated toward honor and good conduct.

The receptive mind includes the heart instruments of intuition and imagination. This mind “enters into,” by perceiving, receiving impressions and intuitions, and taking in revelation. It has to do with how we know God and how we know others. The receptive heart is so important because it’s how we take in the Lord, how we connect deeply with Him and others. The rational mind uses logic and analysis to measure, unpack, store data, make logical connections and understand. With our intellect, we can put into words what we have entered into and know with our receptive mind. The two minds are created to operate in tandem, but we often have one mind overactive and one dormant, creating an imbalance and schism between the two. We can be overly rational and unable to be connected, or very connected and unable to be rational. We can be all spiritual, full of meaning and sensation, yet without editing and ordering the meaning we receive. We often need healing to connect the two. Neither one is fullness in our souls if both aren’t engaged.

God’s truth will illumine, sustain and anchor us. As we take it in and meditate on it, exchanging our old beliefs for his truth, we are powerfully renewed, redirected and changed. His life begins to permeate us; His Spirit creates new understanding. God’s exchange program is to take the words from the world, flesh and devil that are crippling and menacing, arrest them and exchange them for life-giving truth! Write out these thoughts and release them to the Cross, asking God to take them. Then, listen and receive what He is giving you in exchange, renewing your mind. By doing this, you are replacing the toxic with the true, the broken with the whole. His word unfailingly bears fruit in due season, restoring us to wholeness.
Steps to listening prayer:
Begin by acknowledging His Presence. Thank Him that He is with you.
Write out the negative thoughts you have been having.
Take time to be still and listen to what God is saying now to replace the lies.
If He gives Scripture, read and take it in. Ezek. 3:1 “Eat what you find; eat the scroll.” Scripture has authority possessed by no human word or reasoning.
Spontaneously respond to the word with thanks and worship.
Continue to meditate on and cultivate what God has given.

What do we mean when speak of the faculty of the will? It’s the capacity of our soul that functions to choose, resolve, initiate, decide and stand by the decisions. Its voice is “I choose, I decide, I determine,” and in using this voice we make choices, sometimes small, sometimes powerful, that help us to mature and become the person we are meant to be. The will encompasses the whole soul working together, all its branches and capacities and is truly remarkable.
Christ dwells within, in the deep central place of our being and initiates our transformation, radiating into every part of our soul, filling and healing and reforming us. This is spiritual formation and transformation.
