Living his high school and college years in New York City, Dad used the expression “Sabbath goyim” (Shabbos goyim). It’s gone sour recently, sometimes being used now in an anti-Semitic way to refer to Gentiles said to have a submission syndrome towards Jews. But as Dad used it, the meaning was a Gentile hired to do work on the Sabbath that was forbidden to Jews. Light the stove, push the elevator buttons, turn on the lights and air conditioning, etc. We’re told Colin Powell, Mario Cuomo, Elvis Presley, and Mikhail Gorbachev are among those who helped their Jewish neighbors in this way.

A similar thing is common among “English” neighbors of Amish: in integrated neighborhoods, Amish ask non-Amish to let them use their phones, give them rides, and keep ice cream in their freezers.

Sabbath goyim has been rolling around my mind in connection with women who expose false doctrine and false shepherds, and the men who love them for it. The men, pastors and elders, are the Jews and Amish, with the women exposing and condemning false shepherds their Sabbath goyim. Pastors today don’t want to condemn famous religious celebrities and other false shepherds, but we’re very happy when women do this work for us, and we link to their work.

Take, for instance, the current excitement of conservative Christians (including many pastors and elders) on social media praising Megan Basham of The Daily Wire and (formerly) World Magazine. Among male church leaders, she’s all the rage. Recently, she published a book titled, Shepherds for Sale: How Evangelical Leaders Traded the Truth for a Leftist Agenda, with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp (Broadside Books→FlemingRevell→HarperCollins→News Corp). Currently sitting at #50 in Amazon’s book rank, she has a ton of sales.

Of course, Basham isn’t calling these male pastors out for their egotistical marketing, sales, and hauls of many millions of dollars.

It’s their liberalism and false doctrine she opposes. Her sights are set on men. On male pastors who have clawed their way to the top of the heap. She’s after male “shepherds” and writes blistering condemnations of pastors such as Andy Stanley and Rick Warren.

The conservative Roman Catholic magazine, First Things, ran an excerpt of Basham’s book under the title, “The Plot to Queer Evangelical Churches.”1 Here’s part of Basham’s condemnation of Warren and Stanley:

The Bible’s standard for marriage and sexuality are no longer issues (Pastor Rick Warren) speaks about with conviction and …he will engage in verbal gymnastics to avoid addressing them at all.

While evangelical leaders have danced around the issue, a veritable army of trained wolves has been sneaking in among the sheep. …Faithful American Christians could soon be facing—if we’re not already—thousands of Andy Stanleys….

Many pastors, [have] been successfully shamed into barely mentioning homosexuality, transgenderism, or the rest of the LGBTQ array… These shepherds should recall the warning of John Calvin: “Ambiguity is the fortress of heretics.” Well, the heretics are here. They are all around us, and their numbers are growing. …For too many pastors, concern for showing compassion to the lost means they’re not protecting the sheep from false teaching. They are, in fact, starving the sheep to appease goats. John 10:12–13 has a word for them: “The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.”

Shepherds who aren’t teaching their sheep to understand in depth what the Bible teaches about sexuality and why God has prohibited homosexuality are creating sitting ducks for …wolves.

We see Basham is prophetic in her warnings and condemnations of false shepherds.

Basham has come up with nothing new in her condemnations. Lots of pastors and elders have seen the problem, and occasionally, some of them have expressed hesitancy over the agenda of these homosexualists. But none of these pastors and elders ever takes the final step Ms. Basham takes, of warning the sheep of the betrayal of their shepherds.

Why not?

Because we live in the time of Deborah. In Judges, we read that the prophetess Deborah gave a word from the Lord to Barak, commanding him to attack and destroy the army and commander of the Canaanites, Sisera, who was the enemy of the Sons of Israel. The historical account from Judges:

Now (Deborah) sent and summoned Barak the son of Abinoam from Kedesh-naphtali, and said to him, “Behold, the LORD, the God of Israel, has commanded, ‘Go and march to Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men from the sons of Naphtali and from the sons of Zebulun. I will draw out to you Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his many troops to the river Kishon, and I will give him into your hand.'”

Then Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go.”

Stop right there.

There’s not a reformed man in American today who doesn’t understand Barak’s quivering, sashaying, malakoi (effeminate) response. Show this to your pastor. He’ll understand it. Show it to Toby Sumpter, Al Mohler, Doug Wilson, the late Tim Keller, Russell Moore, and Lig Duncan. Show it to Tim Bayly—all of us understand it.

If we’re talking about what “plays in Peoria,” women do better at prophesying against the false shepherds than men. We’re happy to let them.

Have you noticed who are the souls who are exposing the false shepherds, today?

Women. Megan Basham, Dee Parsons and Deb Martin, Julie Roys, Rosario Butterfield, and so on. Modern-day Deborahs.

Sadly, none of them rebuke men for their cowardice as Deborah did:

(Deborah) said, “I will surely go with you; nevertheless, the honor shall not be yours on the journey that you are about to take, for the LORD will sell Sisera into the hands of a woman” (Judges 4).

“The hands of a woman.”

Pastors today are cowards. We want women to be our Sabbath goyim. Women like Julie Roys, Rosaria Butterfield, and Megan Basham do our dirty work. They prophesy. They preach. They are Jael, nailing Sisera’s head to the ground.

Meanwhile, Mohler, Moore, Sumpter, Wilson, and Duncan look on, waiting to take over after the Sabbath goyim finish their work.
