Jean-Pierre Melville doesn't care about accuracy. Or perhaps it is a choice for his character not to understand the bushido code he swears he lives his life by. Or, perhaps, the inconsistencies are a meta-commentary on the fact that "bushido" as we know it is largely made up after the period of time samurais were supposed to be living by the code. Honestly, I kinda jut think Melville liked the Seven Samurai and just decided to fudge it for an audience that didn't really care either. Not that it matters, as even if Pat has a hard time getting past Melville's orientalism, the film is a pretty great gangster film. Except for maybe the ending, which itself is the flagship of all the fake bushido code problems of the rest of the film.
