Michel Simon was a bit of a libertine and libertarian and maybe just a jerk, but Jean Renoir liked him and essentially Boudu Saved from Drowning is Simon's worldview, at least according to Renoir. I suspect that no matter how misanthropic Simon could get he never spit in Balzac. Or maybe he did. I don't know the man.
