Eisegesis: A Dangerous Distortion of Scripture
What is Eisegesis? Eisegesis is the practice of reading one’s own meaning into a text, rather than drawing out the meaning that the author intended. It’s a dangerous distortion of Scripture because it can lead to false interpretations and teachings.

Eisegesis Why is Eisegesis a Problem? Subjectivity: When we read our own meanings into Scripture, we replace the objective truth of the text with our subjective opinions. * Misinterpretation: Eisegesis can lead to misunderstandings of God’s Word, potentially causing spiritual harm. * False Teachings:* Eisegesis can result in the propagation of false doctrines and practices.

How to Avoid Eisegesis Context is Key: Always consider the historical, cultural, and literary context of the passage. * Study the Original Languages: Understanding the original languages of the Bible can help to avoid misinterpretations. * Consult Reliable Sources: Refer to commentaries, concordances, and other scholarly works that provide accurate interpretations. * Pray for Understanding:* Ask God for wisdom and discernment as you study His Word. * Interpret Scripture from Scripture!

Eisegesis often stems from pride and a desire to control the interpretation of Scripture. To avoid this trap, we must approach the Bible with humility and a willingness to submit to its authority.

Eisegesis is a serious threat to the integrity of Scripture. By understanding its dangers and taking steps to avoid it, we can ensure that our faith is grounded in the true meaning of God’s Word.
