Episode 3: Trauma and PTSD   Last Episode you may have heard me briefly mention having experienced trauma in my childhood. Trauma can come in many different forms such as serving active duty in a combat zone, being in a car accident, seeing your pet get attacked by another animal, or maybe even a really bad argument with a loved one.      Trauma disrupts and can alter a person’s nervous system. When the trauma happens in childhood it can impact the development of a child’s nervous system and inhibit important neurological development in children.    There’s trauma which describes a single event and then there’s Complex trauma. Complex trauma involves a repeated and cumulative trauma over a period of time and is considered developmental trauma when it occurs before age 18. Single event trauma as well as complex trauma can both result in PTSD, however PTSD in complex trauma can have a greater number of symptoms.    PTSD Includes:  1.Exposure to actual threat of death, serious injury or sexual violence 2.recurrent, involuntary and intrusive distressing memories of the traumatic event 3.persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with the traumatic events 4.sense of threat   Complex PTSD includes 1-4 and: 5.Affect dysregulation 6.Negative self-concept 7.Interpersonal Disturbances   Today my guest is Melanie. A retired Army veteran who served active duty for 24 years.    Resources: www.psychologyexperts.org/2019/04/01/complex-post-traumatic-stress-disorder/ www.nctsn.org/what-is-child-trauma/trauma-types/complex-trauma   www.traumasensitiveyoga.com   The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel Van der Kolk, MD   Thank you for listening.
