Sigmund Freud called religion an illusion humans invent to satisfy their security needs. To him, like some of us, a benevolent, all-powerful God seems inconsistent with natural disasters and evil that runs rampant throughout the earth.

The simplest explanation is this… God, although he is all-powerful and all loving, He gave us freedom and that freedom was rooted in choices. We have the choice of obeying Him or not obeying Him, to follow His way or not to follow His ways.

I know we look at the evil, the prejudices, the unfairness and think if there is a God why won’t he intervene. We have to understand that God is also a promise-keeping God and he promised us freedom, he promised us that we would always have the choice as to obey or disobey him. And this promise is extended to everyone regardless of the decisions.

We look like to rate sin and evil, when the fact is all sin falls contrary to the will and the word of God. And he doesn’t grade sin, all sin is detestable to him. Revelation 21:8 reads But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

We don’t tend to consider cowardliness, and lying as bad as murdering or sexually sin on the same level with those who practice sorcery, but God groups all sin together. The point I am trying to make is if God began to intervene in our sinful choice, we would all lose our freedom.
