In this week's Parasha we have Az Yashir, which has the words about Hashem, “ Oseh Pheleh/ God makes wonders .” The Mechilta says this not only Asah Imanu Peleh/ He did (in the past), but Oseh Imanu Bechol Dor V’Dor/ In every generation God is doing wonders for us . As it says in Tehilim 46, “ You've done a lot, Your wonders and Your thoughts are on us. ” In Bereshit Raba, the Midrash 29 says, just like we have parnasa every day, we have Geula/redemption every day. And the commentary explains that this Geula every day is the hidden miracles that are happening, that are redeeming us every day from the goyim. As the pasuk says, One sheep among 70 wolves. What a great shepherd you need to protect that one sheep. Those are the wonders that happen every day. We get surprised and shocked when, heaven forbid, there's some kind of terrorist attack against Jews any place in the world. But the bigger wonder is all the attacks that aren't happening, and the fact that we're surviving amongst them, all these generations. Rav Yaakov Emden, in his siddur, says the following: How can a kofer/ heretic , not be embarrassed when looking at the tremendous supervision God has over the Jewish people? Look at us. We're one sheep and we don't even have one locale. We're spread all over the world. We've had challenges for thousands of years. There's no nation that is chased after like us. Look how many enemies we have! And all of those great powerful enemies, the Romans, the Babylonians, the Persians, all those ancient nations are lost. There might be Greeks, but they aren’t the ancient Greeks. There might be Egyptians, but they aren’t the ancient Egyptians. We might have Romans, but not the ancient Romans. But we are still here and vibrant, connected to God, like we were from the beginning of time. We have not lost not one letter of our Torah Sh’Bchtav in all those years. And all the words of the Hachamim are solid. Nothing changed. We're keeping mukseh , we're keeping every last detail. What would a great philosopher answer to this, he wonders. Is it just a coincidence? He says, “I swear, when I analyze these wonders, it’s greater to me than all the wonders and the miracles that God did for our forefathers in Egypt, in the Midbar, and in Eretz Yisrael. This is a bigger miracle.” He says that the longer we're in galut , the bigger the miracle is, the more powerful God's strength is. Everything that the prophets said occurred, and here we are, still surviving. People sometimes say, If only I had miracles like Yetziat Mitzrayim today, then I would believe. But Rav Emden says we have those miracles today. The fact that we're surviving, the fact that we're flourishing after all these years, that is the miracle. B’Ezrat Hashem, we should contemplate these great miracles, and appreciate these great miracles. And the more we appreciate the miracles, the more miracles we get to see. Have a Shabbat Shalom !
