There is a beautiful Midrash Raba in Vayikra (parasha כה letter 5) that says, Rav Levi says that when a chicken’s chicks are young, the chicken gathers the little chicks, sits on top of them, warms them up and brings the worms to them. But when they get older and they come close to the mother, she says, “ Go and peck from your own area. Find your own.” What's the nimshal ? For 40 years in the desert, the manna came down, the Be’er/well brought them water, the quail was available and they were surrounded by the clouds of glory. But once they came into Eretz Yisrael, Moshe Rabbenu said that everyone would go plant their own trees and do their own thing. So what exactly does that mean? Are we young chicks or older chicks? The Vilna Gaon, in his commentary on Bava Kama (92B) says that when a person is still young or new (like in his 20s), and he doesn’t yet feels so independent, Bote’ach Al Boreh Meod/he relies on Hashem a lot . And when you're on that level, God directs you in a tremendously specific supervision. When you get older and start counting on yourself, then, so too, the supervision gets less. When the Jewish people were by the sea, and needed it to split, we had tremendous fear, and we were relying on Hashem tremendously. But then as time went on, their bitachon became less, and so the supervision became less. And he says, that's why in the Bet Hamikdash, there were keruvim resembling children on the holy ark. Because the children indicate that you still feel dependent and you're relying on Hashem. And then, he says, the Shechina comes down. The Shechina is God's supervision. This is a tremendous point, which is specific to our parshiot. Why did the sea split? Because we felt dependent, because we felt we couldn't do it on our own, because we panicked and we relied on Hashem. And as I’ve said before, right after Corona, which should have been a horrible economic time, for many people it was a tremendous economic time. There was all this government funding, and people bought houses and did all kinds of things they didn't do before. How? In my humble opinion, when Corona came along, we suddenly became ketanim again. We became babies again. Our businesses were closed. We couldn’t get goods, we couldn’t do anything, so we were really relying on God. And when you’re really relying on God, then God comes and sits on top of you and warms you up and puts the worm in your mouth. But then suddenly things start getting better and you start feeling confident, that you can do it on your own… and then recessions come along. Of course, you can explain it all naturally, and say the government put out too much money, and because there was too much money, it became a recession. You can explain everything naturally, but that was yesterday's class. Those are just sibbot/ causes. If we look at it with the bitachon lens, this Midrash and this Gain of Vilna are enlightening. This is an important, constant lesson. The more dependent and weak you feel, the more the Shechina dwells on you. If you're a baby chick, the mother chick puts the worm in your mouth. If you think you're a big chick, then you're on your own. Let us be baby chicks. Have a wonderful day.
