Today we continue with lessons from Parashat Bo, because Yetziat Mitzrayim is the source of all our Emunah and Bitachon. Rabbenu Yona, in Mishleh (3,26), says that part of Bitachon is realizing the concept in Pirkei Avot that your Boss is reliable and trustworthy and He will pay you for your work. You have to realize that. He cites a pasuk from Yeshaya 40, 10. הִנֵּ֤ה שְׂכָרוֹ֙ אִתּ֔וֹ וּפְעֻלָּת֖וֹ לְפָנָֽיו׃ His payment is there. God pays well. We have to believe and know that. Rabbenu Yona, in Pirkei Avot on that Mishna, says Hashem is not like a boss that you come to, who says, “I don't have money now. I'm a little cash-short, I can't pay you.” God is in charge of this world, God is in charge of the next world, and He has unlimited funding. You have a good boss with good pay. Where do we see this in Yetziat Mitzrayim? In Parashat Bo, Hashem tells the Jewish people about the Korban Pesach , and all the good news, it says of the Jewish people, “ V’yelchu V’Yaasu/ they went and did like Hashem commanded..” Rashi explains that They went and they did means the Torah counted the going as well. There was a separate reward for going , and a separate award for doing . Rav Yaakov Chaim Sofer, one of the grandchildren of the Kaf HaHaim and Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Kaf HaChaim, says in one of his weekly pamphlets that We see here a tremendous fundamental, that God pays for the preparation. He quotes a Tosefta in Masechet Pe’ah 4,17, that if a person says, “ I'm going to give Sedaka,” and then he gives Sedaka, God rewards him because he said he was going to give Sedaka. He cites a Midrash from Kohelet (7,9) that when a person goes to make a Hatan and Kallah happy, or he goes to visit the sick, not only does he get rewarded for the actual mitzvah, but he gets rewarded for every step of the way. He quotes the Pele Yoetz the topic of Halicha , that says that for every step a person takes to do an act of Hessed, he creates a separate angel. That is called Schar Pesi’ot/ the reward for walking, for taking a step. This applies to all Mitzvot. When the Pele Yoetz talks about preparing for Shabbat, he says that when a person goes to buy things for Shabbat, for every step that he takes walking up and down the aisles, there's a reward. So we don’t just get a reward for doing the mitzvah, there's a reward for the steps that we take in preparation for the mitzvah. Furthermore, in the topic of Cheshek and Chiba/doing a mitzvah with e njoyment and a thrill, the Pele Yoetz says, ” Take a look at the wicked king Nevuchadnezzar, who he took a few steps for God's respect… “ (There was a letter being sent out that said, “ Peace be unto the king and to your God,” and Nevuchadnezzar chased after the messenger and told him to switch it, to mention God first, then the king.) Because of the few steps that he took, he became the world ruler. The Pele Yoetz says, you should make a Kal V’Homer. You should say, “If I do this, then what's waiting for me when I do the Mitzvah?” And again, it’s just for the steps of going to do a mitzvah. This, as the Pele Yoetz says, should cause us to be excited and thrilled with every Mitzvah that we do. It's like, lehavdil , the pinball machine I used to play when I was a kid, with the levers that you hit, that swung back and forth (This was before video games. I don't even know if they have these machines anymore- maybe just in museums). Sometimes you’d get lucky and hit something and it would go, Bing, bing, bing, bing, bing, bing, and the points would go flying. What a thrill it was! Those are the feelings that a Jewish person is supposed to have when you get stuck in traffic. You're not wasting your time. If you're going for a mitzvah, then you're getting rewarded. You're getting paid for what you're doing now. It's not a waste of time. With this attitude of V’yelchu V’Yaasu , you get rewarded for going . These are the lessons of Yetziat Mitzrayim that we're supposed to take with us for eternity. To appreciate the schar of a Mitzvah, and rely on Hashem that He's going to pay us.
