Yesterday, we explained the approach of the Nefesh HaChaim as to how to make miracles occur. Today we'll quote from the Bet Halevi, who takes a slightly different approach. He says that God created the world in a way that we always have to have freedom of choice, and room for doubt. God doesn't want to take away our freedom of choice because that’s what we are here in the world for. If God were to make miracles for us, it would take away our freedom of choice. But, he says, if a person works on himself very much and reaches the level that he doesn't have a doubt in that area, then there's no reason God shouldn't make a miracle for him, because that miracle is not going to give him any added hizuk. He too, uses Rav Chanina Ben Dosa as source. When Rav Chanina saw the vinegar light, he didn't say, “ Oh my gosh! I can't believe it. The vinegar lit!” He was like, “ Okay, so vinegar lit. ” In the words of the Bet Halevi, “ This miracle didn't add hizuk to him.” It didn't add any extra strength to his belief, because whatever strength that he would've gotten from this miracle, he already worked up to, on his own. For example, imagine a fellow who studied very, very well for the Regents and he knows all the answers. When the teacher tests him before the exam, he knows all the answers. And the whole reason why you take the Regents is to make sure you know the answer. He knows the answers. But then, in the middle of the test, his arm gets weak, and he doesn't have the energy to finish. So the teacher fills in the rest of the test for him. That didn't take away the challenge for him. He knew all the answers. So too, God doesn't want to take away life's tests from us.That's why we have the challenges that we have at times, because life is a test. But if you already, so to say, had that clarity before God does the miracle, you’ve reached the clarity anyway. So why not be shown something by God? He's not giving away the answers. He’s not helping you cheat on your test. Somebody once asked me, why it is that when people start working on Bitachon a lot, they start seeing God's Hashgacha Pratit-they start seeing God's hand. So, I used to think it was because the person was looking out for it. Of course, if you're learning a lot about Bitachon, and you keep on talking about relying God, you're going to see God's hand in your life more. Of course, if you’re relying on God, you're going to see things happen. But even if you weren't necessarily relying on Him- you weren't asking for the parking spot, but there it was. You didn't ask for that certain thing that you wanted, but wow, you just see things falling into place. You just happen to be at the right place at the right time. And things are just happening in the right way. But based on this Bet Halevi, I think the answer is that if you work on Bitachon, and you really have clarity about God's hand in your life, then God has no problem ‘ giving away the answers.’ Because you didn't say, “ Oh my gosh!” You said, “ Of course, I should be in the right place at the right time. Hashem’s running the world anyway, it's not something that's dazzling to Him.” So based on this Bet Halevi, the more we work on Bitachon, the more clarity we have, and the more we will see things happen in a more open way. Because the events happening in an open way are not going to take away our freedom of choice, and they aren’t going to take away the test. So we have two approaches. Yesterday, we talked about the Nefesh HaChaim, who says that your belief itself will bring about the miracles, because for you, there's no difference. In your mind, there's nothing else but God, and therefore your belief is going to, so to say, empower God to bring about the miracles. The second approach is similar but different. The Bet Halevi’s approach is that if the miracle, or the open hand of God, will not take away your freedom of choice, then God will do it because it's not taking away your test and challenge. Have a wonderful day.
