One of the questions people often ask is, Why don't we see miracles today like the miracles they saw in yester year. The Nefesh HaChaim ( Shaar ג chapter 12 ( explains why it is that Rav Chanina Ben Dosa was a miracle worker, and it’s no coincidence that he was also known for his belief in En Od Milevado, which means there's nothing else but God. Once when there was a very dangerous snake in the town, Rav Chanina put his foot into the snake hole and the snake bit him. He then walked into Bet Midrash with this dangerous snake hanging around his neck saying, “ Snakes don't kill, sins kill.” The obvious question is, how could he put himself in danger? We aren’t allowed to put ourselves in danger, and we don’t rely on miracles. So why was Rav Chanina Ben Dosa allowed to rely on a miracle? Another time, when his daughter didn't have any oil to light, he told her,” The One that says that oil will light says that vinegar will light,” and the vinegar lit. How was he doing these miracles? The Nefesh HaChaim explains that for the one that believes that there's nothing else but God…in his words, “ Just like when he's in trouble, he subjugates himself and connects himself totally to God, he always has same attitude (He uses the same words). He subjugates himself and connects his pure faith with his steadfast heart, only to God. And he realizes that as far as God's concerned, it's totally equal, whether God performs things in a miraculous way or in a natural way.” The Chazon Ish says the only difference between a miracle and nature is that miracles happen occasionally, while nature is a constant miracle. Babies being born is a miracle. But it's a constant miracle, so we don't make a big deal out of it. Another well-known example of this concept is that when the Jewish people lived in the desert, they said, “ Hamotzi Lechem Min Hashamayim,” when they ate the manna . For them, after 40 years, manna was normal. Rain comes from heaven, so why shouldn't bread come from heaven? The first generation that actually witnessed wheat grow after they put wheat kernels in the ground, said, “ Wow, that's unbelievable!” How is it that if you put a wheat kernel in the ground, it deteriorates and rots and out comes a whole new stalk with hundreds of kernels?! That's a miracle! Not for us. For us, manna would be a miracle. We say Hamotzi Lechem Min HaAretz, and for us, that's normal. The only difference is that we are used one way, because it’s constant. There's really no reason why oil lights. Of course, you can explain chemically why oil lights, but vinegar could just as well light. There's no difference. Rav Chanina Ben Dosa didn't say, “ Oh my gosh, look what just happened!” He said, in a very casual way,“ What's the difference? Oil lights, vinegar, lights, it's all the same.” When a person really believes that, then there is no difference, and God will allow miracles to happen for that person. So, in a way, we are the ones that stop the miracles. Our limited belief, so to say, confines God's abilities. The more we believe that there really is no difference, the less impressed we are by miracles and the more impressed we are by ‘plain old nature,’ the more miracles will happen. That's a secret as to what is necessary to see miracles. Miracles happen when the person really doesn't see a difference between miracles and nature. The more we strengthen our belief, the more we will see miracles. We might not see the splitting of the sea, but in a certain way, we will see that miracle of a salvation that we need. We can say to ourselves, “ The God that says that says a healthy person can live, can also say a person that's weak can also live.” There's a story like this with one of the Gedolim who was very weak by nature. Before his wedding, the other side was concerned, so they went to the Chafetz Chaim to ask about it. The Chafetz Chaim told them, “ Some people are healthy and robust and live a long life, and some people are sickly and live a long life. There's no difference.” And the Gadol lived a long life. The more we believe in God's abilities and don't restrict God, the more we will see extraordinary things happen. Have a wonderful day.
