I 'd like to share a beautiful thought on the first Pasuk of Malchuyot in our Rosh Hashanah Musaf prayers, which is Hashem Yimloch LeOlam Vaed/Hashem is King Forever and controls everything. When we say this, it’s important to picture what was happening at that moment in time. The Jewish people had just been in a very dire situation. The Egyptians were behind them, the sea was in front of them and they had no way out. There were different ideas. Should we fight? Should we scream, should we pray? The last idea that anybody had was, Hey, I have a great idea. Why don't we jump into the sea? The sea is going to split. We'll go through, the Egyptians will come running after us, and then the sea will come crashing down and kill them! That would be a ludicrous idea to suggest, but that's exactly what Hashem did. And when He did that, the Jewish people sang the song Hashem Yimloch LeOlam Vaed, which means that Hashem is in full control . Since He's the King, He can change anything and make anything happen. That was the clarity that they had at the splitting of the sea, and that's the clarity that we're supposed to have on Rosh Hashanah. It's interesting, our rabbis tell us that there are two other things that are as difficult as the splitting of the sea (Sotah 2A)- parnasa, our livelihood, and Shidduchim/getting married. One of the things that happened on Rosh Hashana was that Yosef got out of jail. As we say in our prayers before the shofar, and in our daily prayers once a week, עדות יוסף שמו בצאתו על ארץ מצרים Yosef went out into Egypt… He heard and understood all languages. That happened on Rosh Hashanah Day, and it brought about both his Parnasa (because he became the Viceroy of Egypt) and his shidduch (because he found Osnat bat Potiphera, who became his wife). So, with Yosef, we see this concept of Hashem coming up with ideas that no one would ever think of. If you asked the average person how Yosef got out of jail, he would tell you, the Butler mentioned his name to Paroah. But let's go further back. How did the Butler meet Yosef? He met him in jail . Why did the Butler go to jail? Because a fly flew into the drink that he was giving to Paroah. So, let’s imagine Hashem and the angels planning… How are we going to get Yosef out of jail…Maybe we'll get him a pardon from Paroah… But Hashem says, No I have a great idea. We'll use a fly. The fly will land in Paroah’s cup and the Butler will go to jail. He'll meet Yosef… I'll plant a dream in his mind, Yosef will interpret that dream. Then Paroah will have a dream, Yosef will interpret that, and then he'll become Viceroy of Egypt!! Again, Ludicrous ! And how does Yosef meet his wife? Okay, I have a great idea. She's Osnat bat Potiphera. She is a child of Dina, an illegitimate child, but a child of Dina nonetheless. So here we have the only Jewish boy in Mitzrayim, the only Jewish girl in Mitzrayim. How can we get them together? Yosef is paraded through the streets of Mitzrayim and all the girls are throwing their jewelry down. What does Osnat have? Only the amulet around her neck that identifies her as Osnat, the daughter of Dina, the daughter of Yaakov. So she throws that, Yosef sees it, sees the Hebrew writing and tracks her down. She was the only Jewish girl in his Mitzrayim, his niece, and he marries her. Wonder of wonders! Look how Hashem brings about a shidduch, and how Hashem brings about parnasa, in ways that no one would ever think of! That's the concept of Hashem Yimloch L’Olam Vaed. Hashem is King forever and controls everything . And that's the first thought we have to have as we start the Malchuyot prayers, because that's what brings us a good year- when we realize this important concept that Hashem rules and can make anything happen as He'd like . We go back to Yaakov Avinu who said, MeAyin Yavoh Ezri/where's my help going to come from? We think, where's it going to happen from? What's the idea? What's the plan? And the answer is Ezri M’Im Hashem, Oseh Shamayim VaAretz, my help comes from Hashem that makes the heavens and earth and therefore there are no rules and regulations. God can do whatever He wants. That is principle number one. And B’Ezrat Hashem, we will have that clarity on Rosh Hashanah.
