The third unit that we're talking about is called the Shofarot . The Shofar of Rosh Hashanah has a very special power that we have to appreciate. The Bet Yosef (in siman תפקא ) says, “ From the sound of the shofar, man is aroused to Teshuva,” and he brings a pasuk the Tur brings, “ Is it possible for shofar to blow and the people won't have a fear?” The Hebrew term Harada is used, but that’s not the regular term for fear. Harada is used when Yitzhak Avinu trembled when Esav walked in. The rabbis explain that Harada was a feeling of realizing that he had lived his life with a huge mistake. He thought Esav was something that he wasn't, and he had acted with him in a way that was not befitting Esav’s true character. That sudden realization of, wow, I lived my life with a misconception is the term of Harada. And that's the arousal that happens when the shofar is blown. It arouses us to come to Teshuva. That Teshuva is a necessary ingredient for the sound of the shofar to go up and make an impact. The Pele Yoetz says that the shofar needs teshuva. The shofar, without teshuva, is lacking. So when the shofar is blown, it arouses us to Teshuva, and then that Teshuva goes up with the shofar. This causes a Harada . Everyone's familiar with the Tosafot quote from the Midrash that when the Satan hears the shofar blowing every year, he suddenly gets confused. Everyone asks the age-old question, How could that be? He's hearing it every single year. And the answer is that he heard a shofar at Har Sinai. The Shofarot portion of Musaf is broken into three units, the shofar of Har Sinai, the shofar Rosh Hashanah, and the shofar of the future, when God will blow on a great show fire. When the b first shofar that was blown, that caused the Satan to become knocked out. And if not for the sin of the golden calf, he would've been knocked out for good. But he had one last shot, and he got himself back in. In the future, when the shofar blows, it will do the same thing. But why does he get confused every single year? I came up with a new mashal. If a soldier from Vietnam is walking in a grocery store and a can of vegetables falls on the floor, he'll dive for cover. Why? What happened? It’s PTSD- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, when someone has a previous trauma and that noise triggers him to recall or relive that trauma. That's what's going on here. We don't understand this, but the Satan was traumatized from Har Sinai, and he knows that another one is coming soon, when Mashiach comes. When the shofar blows, we don't hear it, but he understands that shofar. When the sound of the shofar goes up with our Teshuva, it's a very powerful moment. As Rav Wolbe says, it's like the enemy's down for the moment and now's the time to grab a little bit. So when the shofar is blowing, we have to realize that we're capable of coming to a certain clarity. The Pele Yoetz says, at that time, we should come to a certain commitment in religion. So we have to focus on listening to the shofar, of course to fulfill our positive command, but also to take advantage of that special time when the enemy is, so to say, down. B’Ezrat Hashem, we will hear the shofar and come to that level of Harada , that clarity of I was living my life in an improper perspective. We're not yet talking about fixing anything, but just, “ Whoa, I didn't realize that!” Have a wonderful day.
