We now are up to our fourth pasuk of Zichronot (Tehilim 111) טרף נתן ליראיו יזכר לעולם ברי God gave food to those that fear Him He'll forever remember His covenant The word Zechira is used, and that's why it's in the section of Zichronot . What is David HaMelech referring to? The Radak says Teref Natan LiReAv,, the food (or sustenance) that God gave to those that fear Him, refers to Jewish people leaving Mitzrayim, as it says we got their money. Why? Because God remembers forever His covenant. After the Brit Ben Habetarim. God said, they'll go out with a great wealth. And so it happened. This is an important lesson that God makes promises, and sometimes it takes hundreds of years until they're fulfilled. We are in Zichronot and we're strengthening our emunah. And the Emunah and Hashkafa that we want to strengthen is that when Hashem says something, it will happen but it sometimes takes time. Metsudot David has a similar approach, but refers to the mann -again because Hashem promised Abraham Avinu at the Brit ben Habitarim. Even though they rebelled against Him, He continued to give them the mann . Like it says Even at the time of the Chet HaEgel, the mann was still coming down. Rabbenu Bachye in Kar HaLemach, in the discussion of Parnassa , says that one who relies on Hashem has to think about how Hashem takes care of everything- look at the birds in the air, the chick inside the egg where there's seemingly no place to get food- Hashem can do it, so surely He's going to take care of human beings whom He watches. He cites our pasuk, Teref Natan LiReAv, which means Hashem could take care of us in all situations , not just in a civilized place, even a desert like when Eliyahu HaNavi got food through the ravens. He uses this pasuk to strengthen our concept of Bitachon - Teref Natan LiReAv, Look to Hashem. He will take care of us. He took care of us. This is a strong Bitachon pasuk but Rav Yehezekiel Levenstein offers with beautiful midrashic approach to this pasuk . It's in Or Yehezkiel , in his sefer Darkeh Avoda, where he talks about withstanding tests and challenges. He says, let's look at Abraham Avinu. His life was fraught with constant tests. Akedat Yitzhak , we remember every single day, not just to remind us, he says, of Zechut Avot, but to remind us (this is brought down in the poskim ) that life is full of challenges and tests, even for the greatest people. And the goal of a Jewish person is to withstand these tests, not to be broken and to accept. Avraham Avinu had ten tests. Yitzchak Avinu's life was consistent with difficulties. Yaakov Avinu certainly endured many difficulties, as he says, Short and difficult lives I had , And why is all this? In his words, that is the way we get to what we get to. He quotes a Midrash Rabba in Bereshit 40,2. Teref Natan LiReAv/ God gave food. Don't read this as Teref , but Tiruf . Tiruf means confusion and being blended in a blender. God gave confusion. Why? Because that's how Hashem lifts us up. That's how we get great. So for the person that's going through life saying, What's going on? Has Hashem forgotten me? Why is life so difficult? The answer is, Did Hashem forget Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov? Of course not. He didn't forget them. So what's going on? Why is life so difficult? And the answer is, Tiruf Natan LiReAv/ sometimes God gives Tiruf He puts us in a blender . He mixes up our situation. Don't think He forgot about you. He's remembering you like he remembered Abraham, Yitzhak, and Yaakov. Forever and ever. He is remembering us. He remembers Akedat Yitzhak. He remembers all of those situations. This is a great, great thought in the approach of what Zichronot means and what it means to be remembered and what it means to be forgotten. And that's our lesson for today.
