In our daily prayers, there's a section called Korbanot , which discusses many of the offerings. It also has different introductory paragraphs to our daily Tefillah. One unit starts with the words, L’Olam - לְעוֹלָם יְהֵא אָדָם יְרֵא שָׁמַיִם בַּסֵּתֶר כְּבַגָּלוּי, וּמוֹדֶה עַל הָאֱמֶת, וְדוֹבֵר אֱמֶת בִּלְבָבוֹ, וְיַשְׁכִּים וְיֹאמַר Man should always be God-fearing, in hiding like he is in the open, and admit the truth, and speak the truth in his heart as well, and get up in the morning and say…. Etc The commentaries explain that sometimes you make a proclamation, but the proclamation might not really be something that's truly in your heart. You might be just saying it. This happens quite often. We speak and we say things, and it's easy to give a speech. But the question is, do you really feel it in your heart? Are you really holding there? I had a personal experience related to this concept that I'd like to share: About three weeks ago, we came out with a new book called Daily Dose of Bitachon , based on Hovot Halevavot’s Shaar Bitachon. It’s all about Bitachon. So I got up in the Deal Shul one morning in order to push sales. I had remembered that people were having problems with containers, being stuck in the ports, so I said, “ If you want a segula to get the containers out of the ports and get your goods here, all it's going to cost you is $25 to buy yourself a book on Bitachon.” But s omeone came over after the prayers and said, “ Rabbi, you got it wrong. We don't need to get the containers. We need to get rid of the inventory. We have too much inventory.” So the next time I got up, my new sales pitch was, “ Do you want to solve your inventory problems? For $25, you can solve inventory problems..” It was a cute line, and a nice way to sell books, but was I really sympathetic and empathetic to the people's problems that they have too much inventory? Not really. I was just trying to come up with a cute line to sell some books. Then, a little later, I got an order from a Yeshiva that was having an alumni gathering, and they wanted to give out Daily Dose of Bitachon. I asked how many they wanted and they said they’d figure it out. They later sent me an email ordering 350 books! I was excited. 350 books is a very nice order. I get a little royalty and I was very happy. So had the books shipped there. The next day I called and asked the rabbi in charge how the books went. He answered that it was a little strange. “I thought they took books, but I have a lot left over. Maybe they thought that we were selling them, because they it was next to the credit card machine?” He then sent me a check, but the check did not cover the number of books I sent him. So I called him up and told him I thought there was a mistake. He said, “ What do you mean? I ordered 150. ” So I checked the email and sure enough, he ordered 350.He had made a mistake. He apologized and asked me if I would take them back. I said okay, but I felt bad that the Yeshiva would have to pay for shipping , so I offered to come by and pick them up. Because I didn't want to leave the books in my car until I got back to Brooklyn, I took them out and I put them in my house in Lakewood. And now there are seven boxes of books in the entrance to my house. Every time I walk in or out, I see the seven boxes of books. I say, “ Here's my inventory. I have to get rid of the inventory.” It was a little uncomfortable to look at my inventory. Would I return it? Wouldn't I return it. Would I sell it? Wouldn’t I sell it? Then it hit me. Here I was, the guy with the the grand ideas about the segula to get rid of your inventory. Just buy a book for $25 !! Easier said than done. It's very nice when you’re talking about other people's inventory, but when it becomes your own inventory, it's a whole different story. It was an important lesson for me, that you always have to be honest and true with what you say. As we've quoted in the past, Things that go out of the heart, enter the heart. It’s one thing to just say something, and another thing to say it from your heart, and that's important. When it comes to Bitachon, when it comes to telling other people things, it can’t just be something that you’re speaking , it really has to be in your heart. Have a wonderful day, and please order some books J
